It supports Windows, Mac, and Linux, with the pricing beginning at $39.99 for a single-device, one-year license. Extending the license to cover five devices during three years is possible at $179.97.

Upgrading to ESET Home Security Essential adds a spam filter, parental controls, webcam protection, a secure browser to protect online transactions, and an anti-theft feature for Windows. It also throws in a firewall, traffic monitoring, Android support, and a vulnerability scanner feature for your home devices. Prices start at a reasonable $49.99 for a single-device, one-year license, rising to $227.98 (284.97 on renewal) to cover 10 devices over three years.

Next is ESET Home Security Premium, which extends the suite with a password manager, file and folder encryption, and a LiveGuard feature to proactively discover and stop previously unseen types of threats, starting at $59.99 for one device during one year, and increasing to $251.98 ($314.97 upon renewing) for a 10-device, three-year license.

Finally, ESET Home Security Ultimate tops the range with the addition of enhanced browser and privacy protection and unlimited VPN. It starts at $179.99 for a five-device, one-year license, climbing to $614.97 to expand coverage on 10 devices for the duration of three years.

Installing ESET NOD32 Antivirus is as easy as it gets. Upon successful installation, ESET NOD32 Antivirus automatically launches a full system scan.

The executables and data files grab about 100MB of hard drive space, which is very little, there are three background processes, and you can use your system as usual when it’s on.


Besides, AV-Comparatives’ November 2024 Performance Test has also delivered mostly positive results, placing ESET fifth out of 17 for minimal impact on system performance.

Interface

ESET NOD32 features a clear and easy-to-use dashboard showing your current security status, allowing you to launch a full system scan with a click, as well as a sidebar that enables browsing the program’s other options. You can also drag and drop features to arrange them in the most convenient way for you.

You can also drag-and-drop files or folders you wish to scan separately. The logs for individually scanned items can be exported into an XML or TXT file using a right-click menu inside the recent antivirus events. It is also possible to filter items by multiple parameters.

Antivirus

Scan types might be a bit more limited than some of the competitors’ - there are only Full System, Removable Devices, and Custom scans. There’s no Quick Scan - at least as a standard, as it’s actually possible to create scan profiles to run more limited checks.

The app scanned our 80GB test system in less than 10 minutes during the first run, and 6 minutes for the second, which is a rather fast time.

If you feel comfortable enough with tinkering, you can browse the Advanced Settings box for expert-level options ranging from basic objects to scan (boot sectors, network drives, archives, and more) to finer details like email protocols to check/ignore and the level of nested zip files to scan.

For more flexibility, you can right-click a file in Explorer, and ESET NOD32 gives you the option to scan it for threats. You can also check the file’s reputation, scan it without cleaning it, submit it for analysis, or manually quarantine it even if it’s not been flagged as malware but you’re concerned about it.

AV-Comparatives’ Real-World Protection Test summary report for July-October 2024 saw ESET in fifth place (out of 16), with a protection rating of 99.2%.


In terms of AV-Test’s Home Windows User reports, ESET performed marvelously, scoring maximum points for the past year in areas of protection, performance, and usability.

Blocking malicious sites

ESET NOD32 Antivirus is equipped with multiple URL defense system layers. They include web access protection, an anti-phishing option, traffic scanning, and browser protection through an advanced script scanner, all built into the core engine.

This means that there’s no need to install browser extensions or worry about supported or unsupported browsers - you’re automatically covered for everything that accesses the World Wide Web.

There are a lot of configuration options here as well. Most are on/off switches, like those for scanning HTTP sites, as well as creating handy blacklists and whitelists of sites to always/never be blocked, alongside ThreatSense which combines various complex threat detection methods.

AV-Comparatives’ 2024 Anti-Phishing Test discovered that ESET blocked 87% of malicious URLs and delivered no false positives, thus outperforming NordVPN Threat Protection Pro (85%), but trailing behind Kaspersky (93%), McAfee (92%), and Avast (91%).

Device control

Extras start with Device Control, an unusual feature that enables defining what happens when users connect any type of a host device to the system, be it external storage, a USB printer, a Bluetooth device, a scanner, a smart card reader, modems, and more.

Specifically, options include making devices read-only, displaying a warning to users, or blocking them entirely. Rules can apply to all or specific devices, as well as to some or all user accounts. The system logs all device connections for later review.

More features

ESET NOD32 doesn’t have the usual bonus tools that many other security apps do, so there’s no password manager, file shredder, junk file cleaner, and the like. However, there are some uncommon options hidden away in the Tools menu.

Here, you can view logs, see what the program has blocked, monitor running processes with additional reputation information from ESET LiveGrid, fire up the ESET SysInspector that collects detailed information about your system, clean your device, and more.

That said, some of these hidden features may be a little odd. The System Cleaner claims to warn you if key Windows settings have been changed from their defaults (like because of malware), but it doesn’t offer enough information to make a clear decision.

Meanwhile, ESET SysInspector takes the spotlight by taking a snapshot of your system and highlighting interesting items: running processes, network connections, critical files (HOSTS), important Registry entries, and more, something like an extended task manager.

Final verdict

ESET NOD32 is an interesting antivirus that boasts some expert-level tweaks and tools, as well as boasting solid results from the independent testing labs.

Previously known as ESET Internet Security, the Home Security Essential builds upon the NOD32 Antivirus edition, adding a firewall, spam filter, parental controls, webcam protection, network monitoring, extra network attack and botnet protection, an anti-theft feature for Windows, as well as an Android app.

Firewall

ESET Home Security Essential’s firewall starts in automatic mode, allowing all outgoing traffic without making any filtering attempts while blocking uninitiated traffic from the web.

It doesn’t tell you that outbound traffic is unfiltered by default, so if a process tries to get online, it can. Secondly, even if you enable the alternative Interactive Mode, it still won’t make any decisions by itself, instead asking you whether it should trust any application making an outbound connection.

And it’s literally any application, including the most well-known and trusted processes such as Firefox, Chrome, Windows system processes, and others. While this may be straightforward for the above apps, looking at something like ‘64DriverLoad.exe is trying to communicate with remote site 255.255.255.255’ won’t make much sense.

ESET also offers a firewall Learning Mode, which the company says ‘automatically creates and saves rules according to predefined parameters’ but warns shouldn’t be used permanently as it’s intended for initial configuration only.

Spam filter

ESET Home Security Essential’s spam filter can integrate into Microsoft Outlook. It is quite capable, allowing you to decide whether to scan incoming, outgoing, and read emails, select an action to take (delete, move to the spam or a specified folder), add custom text to the subject line, and log the spam score.

Other features

ESET Home Security Essential’s webcam protection is powered by a very configurable rules-based system, so you can always allow access to some apps, block others, prompt for a few, or just automatically block everything.

The Banking and Protection feature opens your default browser in a hardened form which ESET says makes it more difficult for keyloggers to capture personal data.

In terms of Parental Controls, ESET’s are also very basic, with support for content filtering and activity logging, but nothing else, even the basic functionality like restricting internet access or device use by time.

At the same time, the Anti-Theft feature allows you to track your device’s location, use webcam image capture to get a view of its location or send a message to its finder.

Elsewhere, the Network Inspector lists devices connected to your network and raises alerts for any new connections. It can scan your network for open ports, weak router passwords, and other vulnerabilities.

Internet Security App

ESET Home Security Essential also has Android support, and upgrading from a free Mobile Security and Antivirus app packs extras, from mobile versions of desktop tools (anti-theft, banking protection, network monitor), to an app locker, security audit, and more.

AV-Test’s January 2025 Android Test gave it full marks for protection, performance, and usability.

Final verdict

ESET Home Security Essential has a long list of features, some impressive, some not as much. If you’re an ESET fan or need this precise feature set, the suite might be interesting, but if not, you might want to look elsewhere.

Previously called ESET Smart Security Premium, the ESET Home Security Premium adds the new LiveGuard feature (an extra layer of cloud analysis), a password manager, and a file encryption system to the Home Security Essential’s feature list.

Live Guard

The LiveGuard tech is a new form of cloud analysis aiming to detect the very latest and yet undiscovered threats. This means that, if you turn it on, whenever you access a file it hasn’t seen before, it will automatically send it to the ESET cloud for in-depth testing.

Password manager

Although it’s not as powerful as specialist standalone apps like Dashlane and LastPass, ESET’s Password Manager is smarter than the efforts you get with most security suites, and it covers the basics well enough.

Wide platform support includes apps for Android, iOS, and Mac, as well as browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. You can import passwords from Chrome, Firefox, and a range of other password managers (1Password, LastPass, Dashlane, BitWarden, Enpass, and many more).

Once you’re up and running, the browser extensions allow you to generate secure and customized passwords, save your credentials, sync them across devices, and automatically fill in web forms.

You can also create one or more Identities, with personal details to be automatically filled into web forms: name, address, date and place of birth, common forms of web ID, credit card information, and more.

The service also highlights particularly weak and reused passwords.

Secure data

Finally, the Secure Data feature allows you to create an encrypted vault on a hard drive, USB stick, or another device. The vault is opened with a password and acts like a virtual drive or folder, where you can save or copy files to encrypt them, or open or view them to decrypt them.

Final verdict

All things considered, ESET Home Security Premium is a solid offering, especially taking into account its extras - the password manager, LiveGuard service, and Secure Data option. However, if you don’t need any of these, you may want to skip this package.

ESET’s top-of-the-line Home Security Ultimate adds enhanced browser and privacy protection, unlimited VPN, as well as identity protection through dark web scanning, credit report monitoring, identity threat alerts, SSN tracking, lost wallet assistance, and recovery alongside $1 million insurance.

That said, due to local legislative and sales barriers, this tier may not be available in many countries at the time of writing, and these are listed on the website.

Enhanced browser and privacy protection

Ultimate takes Premium’s browser security and privacy to a whole new level with identity protection, dark web scanning, credit report monitoring, social media identity monitoring, identity threat alerts, SSN tracking, lost wallet assistance, and identity recovery alongside $1 million insurance.

Unlimited VPN

An especially useful feature added by Ultimate is the unlimited ESET VPN, which is available on Windows, macOS, smartphones, and tablets, with a guaranteed no-logs policy, zero tracking, DNS leak protection, and MAC spoofing protection.

You’ll also get access to servers in over 60 locations around the world. The VPN allows you to unblock geo-restricted content, ‘kills’ the internet when the VPN is off, enables you to decide which apps to pass through it, as well as configure which proxies and connection protocols you want to use (WireGuard, IKEv2 (IPsec), UDP, TCP, Stealth, or Wstunnel).

Final verdict

The unlimited VPN, aside from the advanced identity protections and insurance, makes ESET Home Security Ultimate a complete and desirable package for anyone concerned with online privacy and identity - unless you’re in one of the excluded countries, that is.

What types of hosting does Bluehost offer? 

Bluehost provides some of the best WordPress hosting in the shape of shared, VPS hosting, cloud, and dedicated hosting plans. These plans are good for everything from blogs to ecommerce sites of all sizes.

The shared plans come in four flavours: Starter, Business, eCommerce Essentials, and eCommerce Essentials Premium. You'll find yourself directed to these plans if you click through from WordPress Hosting, WooCommerce, and Web Hosting. The only difference is that if you click through from WooCommerce you'll only be offered eCommerce Essentials, and eCommerce Essentials Premium.

The shared plans are ideal for up to 400K visits but those figures are based on the average site and don't specify a performance level for the sites. You should consider the number an estimate and safety net. If your site gets a lot of visitors, you'll likely need to use one of the VPS, cloud, or dedicated plans.

The VPS plans come in three flavours: Standard NVMe 4, Enhanced NVMe 8, and Ultimate NVMe 16. Plus, a bonus custom flavour. The number in the name corresponds to the amount of RAM you get with each plan. You get a 1:2 ratio of CPU cores to gigabytes of RAM. As for site visits, you're on your own here when it comes to estimated levels but support will help you make the choice on which one is best for you.

The cloud plans also come in three flavours: Cloud 10, Cloud 25, and Cloud 50. Plus, the additional custom plan. The number in this name corresponds to how many sites each plan supports. The cloud plans are ideal for 300K - 23 million site visits a month.

It's the same pattern with dedicated hosting plans: Standard NVMe 32, Enhanced NVMe 64, and Premium NVMe 128...and the custom plan. These plans have a CPU core to RAM ratio of 1:4.

Bluehost's WordPress and shared hosting plans are the same. Opt for one of these plans and your website is stored on a server which also hosts many other accounts. This type of hosting saves money, because the cost of the server is shared between many users. But it runs the risk of unstable performance, because the server's resources - the processor, the RAM, the network connection - are also shared by all the accounts.

The cheapest plan starts at $3.95/mo for 36 months and then renews at $9.99. It supports 10 websites and up to 40K visits a month. It provides 10 GB NVMe storage, a CDN, managed WordPress updates, SSL, and some security features. Email and back ups are only free for one year.

Spending more on the next plan will set you back $6.45/mo for 36 months and then $14.99/mo after. The only difference is that the plan supports more visitors (200K) but also malware removal and free domain privacy for one year.

Step up again and you'll be paying 6.99/mo for more resources and more security, development tools, and ecommerce tools. This plan renews at $17.99/mo.

These are capable products, easy to manage, faster than most (more on that later) and powerful enough to handle many personal and small business sites.

Bluehost VPS hosting

VPS (Virtual Private Server) hosting is where a physical server is divided up into individual server environments. There are far fewer accounts on a server than you'll see with shared hosting, and your VPS doesn't have to share its resources with other sites. That's a real performance plus, and while some shared hosting plans might struggle with large amounts of visitors, a good VPS can usually handle hundreds of thousands.

Bluehost has three VPS plans. The simplest gives you 2 CPU cores, 4 GB DDR5 RAM, 100 GB NVMe storage, unmetered bandwidth and a cPanel/WHM license for $46.99/ month over three years, $65.99 on renewal. At the top of the range, an 8 core, 16 GB DDR5 RAM, 450 GB NVMe storage and unmetered bandwidth setup is priced at $94.99 a month over three years, $140.99 on renewal.

Selecting a dedicated hosting package gets you the maximum resources and control: an entire web server, for your use only.

Does Bluehost have a page builder?

Bluehost offers a WordPress page builder. It's based on WordPress and has some of the same pain points of the WordPress built-in block editor but has some handy tools to make it easier. You can use this for all types of sites from blogs to eCommerce stores.

First of all, you get a helping hand if you're stating out with your first WordPress site in the form of an AI built website. There are also suggestions and tutorials to help you make it better. There is also the WordPress Academy to help you better understand WordPress.

How fast is Bluehost? 

Performance matters in web hosting, even for the cheapest of plans. A slow site, regularly down, could be worse than having no website at all.

To test Bluehost we migrated a WordPress site to the most basic plans and then ran some WordPress benchmark tests to see how well the server performed in general. After that we did some gentle stress testing to see how well the site coped with some traffic.

For benchmarking, the WordPress Benchmark plugin measures CPU and memory use, object cache, filesystem access, and network speed. It then provides a final benchmark score. Meanwhile, the command line tool Siege can simulate multiple concurrent visits, providing us with an idea of the server’s reliability when demand is high.

Our modest WordPress-based WooCommerce store, with around 20 items and a welcoming landing page scored 7.9 in WordPress Benchmark. This was a particularly good set of scores across the board, only let down by the “Persistent object cache enabled” benchmark unable to measure a score.

Meanwhile, the Siege testing found the hosting able to handle 9 and 15 concurrent visitors comfortably, responding well and with over 95% availability. Considered together, these test results offer some confidence that even with Bluehost’s most affordable hosting plans, you can expect reliable performance.

Note that these tests determine performance on a shared hosting plan. As such, they don’t offer any insights into speeds on dedicated hosting, cloud hosting, or VPS hosting plans.

What is Bluehost's support like? 

There is only chat support for the most basic shared hosting plans. All other plans come with chat and phone support. There is also only a local US or international number for phone support and all support is in the English language. This might not be an issue if you're in North America but it could be costly and less than ideal compared with having support in your local language.

To be fair, this shouldn't be a big cross in the cons column because most hosting companies don't offer phone support at all - let alone in multiple languages. Still, only offering English support across all support is going to be a dealbreaker for some and other hosts do offer multi-lingual support, such as Hostinger.

Final verdict

If you want to make your first WordPress site and you want to invest some time in getting to Know WordPress then Bluehost is the right host for you. Making an actual WordPress site can be difficult and I did find it slightly easier on Bluehost than other hosts thanks to WonderBlocks.

I also found it easier to do some technical things like improve website performance metrics with Bluehost too.

Bluehost doesn't quite grab a best for beginner accolade because I think nothing can beat DreamHost's offer of building a site for you and you do feel a bit of the less than ideal WordPress page building interface come through into the UI when editing web pages.

What payment types does Bluehost support?

Bluehost accepts payment via card only.

Does Bluehost offer refunds?

Buy a Bluehost hosting plan, or some add-on products and you're protected by a 30-day money-back guarantee. That's typical for the hosting world, although a few providers offer more: InMotion Hosting gives you 90 days, HostGator 45 days.

We noticed one or two minor issues. Bluehost doesn't offer refunds on SSL certificates, for instance; Hostinger does. But generally, this is a straightforward, catch-free guarantee which gives you exactly the protection you'd expect.

Does Bluehost have an uptime guarantee?

Bluehost doesn't quote any target uptime figure, or have any formal method of compensating you if your server is down for a lengthy period.

That's a little disappointing. Most providers quote uptime figures of at least 99.9%, some 99.99%, and say they'll give you credits if the service doesn't hit the mark.

These 'guarantees' don't always mean very much, though. The small print might say downtime doesn't count if it's due to 'unforeseeable circumstances', for instance, something which could be used to rule out almost anything.

Hardly an internet phenomenon, ADP has been around for over 70 years, and is also a worldwide company, with a presence in over 140 markets. ADP offers a comprehensive suite of services that fit around the theme of Human Capital Management (HCM). This includes areas such as HR, compliance expertise, payroll, and benefits administration among its many offerings.

Plans and pricing

ADP does not provide upfront information about pricing, but rather takes the route of getting in touch for a custom quote. This does require contacting the company and providing your business credentials, but this does take some investment of time, and makes it difficult to quickly compare quotes between providers.

While we did not find details of the pricing, it appears to be based upon several variables. This includes an initial setup fee, a monthly base fee that depends on the options chosen, and an additional cost per user. It has also been reported that there are discounts available for paying annually, but then there are no refunds issued for unused months.

We searched, and did not find a free trial, but some users indicate that the first two months are free as an introductory offer. ADP does indicate that there is a customized demo available to better decide if this fits your company’s needs.

Features

ADP offers HR software that is designed to help with Human Capital Management (HCM), which can also go under the names of Human Resource Management System (HRMS) or a Human Resources Information System (HRIS)- although according to ADP the three terms can be used interchangeably. The goal is to automate, and streamline multiple different HR processes, including payroll, recruiting and onboarding, and time and attendance, from a single online dashboard, with an easy to use, and intuitive interface that ADP refers to as iHCM.

This iHCM is a cloud-based SaaS, which puts automation and the cloud to work, to take the drudgery out of human resources tasks, which can often be repetitive. This same dashboard gets used by multiple folks, and employee data can be easily uploaded, and accessed, so there is no need to maintain separate files. From there, time and attendance can be managed, including absences, such as having the ability for employees to request vacation time and approve the requests. Payroll can also be done with ease, and with accuracy. New talent can also be not only found, but also onboarded, and developed.

The advantages also go beyond the automation of routine automated processes. For example, teams can be tracked and motivated, and AI can be applied to find trends in staff behavior via ‘People analytics,’ such as a division with the most turnover. Tasks can not only be automated, but also reminders can be set to facilitate their completion. There is the Time & Attendance module that from the manager dashboard can track items including overtime worked, timecard approvals, late employees, absenteeism, and schedules that can get adjusted on the fly.

The ADP can be used for management of existing employees. It fosters high performance, so that individual and team goals can be aligned with the organizations through feedback along with coaching. Also, succession planning can be done to develop, identify and track individuals to take over positions as needed. Furthermore, skills development is done via focused learning and targeted training to keep the workforce’s education at a high level. Competitive compensation is done via “Equitable compensation strategies.”

A potential downside of ADP’s iHCM is that it targets only a certain size organization, essentially a medium sized company. While it is scalable, ADP indicates that it is for 50 to 999 employees, so small businesses, and larger enterprises will need to look elsewhere for their HR software needs. For larger needs, ADP does offer an Enterprise HCM solution.

Support

Direct support options for ADP are plentiful on the administrative side. Customers can reach out via a direct phone number, with hours of operation from 9 AM to 5:30 PM Monday to Friday, and closed for bank holidays. Alternate options include a support portal, dubbed the ‘ADP eService Support Portal,’ which can initiate a live chat for immediate help, or can also submit a service ticket for a more complex situation.

There is also a closed, online community forum, dubbed ‘The Bridge.’ This is an interactive online forum for Payroll and HR Professionals to interact and exchange information among colleagues.

Support options for employees needing help with their paystub are far more limited. These users are encouraged to deal directly with the HR Department of their respective organization, for a situation of a lost password to access a paystub, or for problems logging in. For other assistance, a phone number is provided, but as it gets listed last, we get the sense that ADP wants these employees to more directly deal with their company, rather than with ADP.

Final verdict

The ADP iHCM is a human resource solution targeted for medium sized businesses. We appreciate the powerful dashboard that can manage the gamut of HR processes, from talent acquisition to separations, and everything in between including payroll, team goals, and time and attendance. We also like the direct support options. We take note of the disadvantages, that include the totally opaque pricing, and this can turn into an expensive solution. Still, for a company that needs to support its HR department, the iHCM showcases ADP’s decades of experience in HR solutions.

Criminal Record Searches from the cornerstone of the offerings. The most local one is on the county level, the so-called County Court Criminal Record Search. It covers a minimum of 7 years, and encompasses court convictions for both felonies and misdemeanors. It gets conducted on-site at the local court house, with a turnaround time of within 2 days in 97% of cases. When a conviction gets identified, it includes the relevant case number, and the other details of the case such as any prison time or fines that the court ordered, and how the applicant was identified.

Expanding the search takes us to the Statewide Criminal Search that is offered, and covers 42 states. The results vary by the state, but often include the offense, court document number, and other relevant details should a conviction be found. In some cases there is an additional charge for this search, depending on the state, from a low of zero dollars in Alabama, to a high of New York that imposes a $95 search fee.

These county and state searches often get directed based upon the addresses that the individual has lived at, both currently and previously. Sometimes, the approach needs to be more widespread, such as with an individual without accurate prior address info. Universal Background Screening has this covered as well, starting with the USA CriminalSearch, which covers “Criminal history data from statewide court repositories from 22 states and Department of Corrections records from 45 states.” This reportedly covers 94% of the US population. The search can even be expanded further with a USA OffenderSearch that covers a nationwide sex offender registry. Finally, there is USA SecuritySearch, a national security database and antiterrorism database with fourteen sources.

Another differentiation point of Universal Background Screening is that this is verified information. This means that it is not merely the results of a search of a database, which can often be inaccurate due to unconfirmed hits, particularly with a common name. Rather, these searches are a curated result, with confirmed hits that can be trusted, and “Fully compliant with Section 613 of the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).”

Beyond criminal background checks, there are also additional services available. First is the search of motor vehicle driving records, which captures data going back 36 months, and includes traffic violations, and license suspensions. Then there is the Employment Credit Report, that is tailored for employment purposes. It is a PEER (Pre-Employment Evaluation Report) from TransUnion, and gives a complete credit history to identify applicants that are potentially overextended, or not financially stable. It does not include account numbers, nor adversely affect the applicant’s credit score. Finally, there is drug testing, through a network of over 8,000 sites at SAMHSA-certified labs, that even can meet the stringent Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements.

Support

We can sum up that options for support with Universal Background Screening are direct, but not excessively plentiful. There is a postal address, but it is doubtful how many want to receive their support that way in our modern connected times. There are also direct phone numbers, with extra kudos for being toll free, and dedicated for service, but most folks don’t really pay for long distance these days anyway. We also found a fax number, and a direct email address. The final option we found was a support portal, where you enter the required fields, and you can essentially send a message for contact, although we would criticize the shortcoming that there is no option to include an attachment, which can be useful to send a marked up screenshot to detail the difficulty encountered.

In terms of the more advanced options, there really are not any to be found. We did not find a chat box, whether live nor an automated chatbot. Nor are there any self-serve options such as a FAQ, predone articles, webinars or a community forum.

The competition

Although Universal Background Screening is our top choice for the best employee background check service, it isn’t a great option if you need to order a low volume of screenings quickly. GoodHire is a service that offers pre-made screening packages and which may be worth checking out if you don’t want to waste time setting up a customized screening system, as you have to with Universal.

Sterling is another background check provider that sells custom solutions for clients in certain industries. Depending on your sector, you may find that Sterling has services that fit better with your specific sector than Universal’s screenings do.

Final verdict

Universal Background Screening is a significant contender in the candidate search market, particularly regarding pre-employment screening. The company's extensive search options offer employers a comprehensive approach to vetting potential hires. 3D Home design is a complex affair, so it’s always impressive when developers turn this into an online service which you can access and work on from the comfort of your favourite web browser. Not all of them succeed, mind, as the constraints of working online can affect performance, flexibility, features, and even interface design. So where does Planner 5D stand against the best interior design software?

Planner 5D: Pricing & plans

The best way to check out a service is to be able to try it for free, and Planner 5D understand that. In fact, they offer two ways to do it. The first one is the simplest option: sign up to the ‘Free’ tier. It allows you to create and share as many projects as you want, and work across devices. There will be limitations of course, such as a restricted catalog and an inability to access high quality renders.

The first paid tier is ‘Premium’. With it, you gain access to automation tools to speed up the creation of projects, over 8,000 furniture items, 5 renders per month, and the ability to turn a file or image into a 3D plan. All this, and more, can be yours for $5 a month on an annual plan (or $20 on a month by month basis).

Next is ‘Professional’, which includes features such as unlimited 4K renders, being able to upload 3D models in various file formats, moodboards, 360˚ panoramas, custom branding and more, for $33.33 a month on an annual plan, or $50 on a month by month basis. This is also the only tier you can try free for a week (although you’ll need to give them your card details to access it, and you’ll have to remember to cancel it should you decide it’s not for you).

Finally, there’s ‘Enterprise’, for those who need more high-end features. This is a custom tier, so the subscription price will also be bespoke.

  • Although the interface that greets you when you login feels cluttered, the one designed when you’re into your project is sleek, well organised, easy to understand and very responsive.

Once you’ve created an account, you’ll be graced with quite a busy interface, with drop down menus at the top, a sidebar to the left, and the rest of the window dedicated to any project you previously created.

To create a new project, all you have to do is click on the appropriately named ‘New Project’ button. You’re offered a few options, such as starting with a blank slate, uploading a plan created elsewhere, working off of a template, or using the ‘Smart Wizard’. There’s also an option to hire a designer, but since Planner 5D boasts that no design knowledge is necessary to use their service, we opted to ignore that one.

The Wizard does make things easier and quicker, but we were disappointed not to have full control over the room’s dimensions, and the position of the windows and doors. Still, if you want something designed quickly based on a handful of available shapes, and randomly generated furniture placement, this is definitely the option to go for.

Once the automation is complete, you have full control over your project. This is were you gain access to an incredibly well implemented interface. At the top, you’ve got a menubar with undo and redo buttons, a tool to view and add additional floors, a properties section, a render one, and an easy way to switch between 2D and 3D views.

To the left is a sidebar containing all the tools you’ll need during the creative process, from building tools, to furniture, and plants, as well as a section reserved for the items you’ve used recently (to make it easier to find them again), and your favourites. Everything is well organised, easy to find, and very responsive.

  • Numerous options, coupled with complete versatility and the ability to effortlessly switch between 2D and 3D, while being able to do (almost) everything in either view. We had no complaints.

Having a good interface is one thing, but it’s how it responds to your commands that can make or break a service. And here, Planner 5D truly excels. We mentioned how well organised the tools were: clicking on the category you’re after in the sidebar, expands it. From there, you’re given a number of sub-categories, and within those, multiple examples of items you can use.

Adding rooms is super easy: select the basic shape and it’s instantly added to your project. You can then reposition it. Altering its dimensions is just a question of clicking on a wall to select it and bringing up coloured knobs on either end. Use those to resize that wall, or drag the entire wall to preserve its length but change its position (any wall connected to the one you’re changing will be altered as well so they remain connected).

Windows and doors snap to any wall they near as you drag them, matching that wall’s angle in the process. When it comes to furniture, you have great flexibility in placing anything that’s available into your project. You can even group objects together, making it easier to move them all in one go.

One feature we were very impressed with was the ability to import the image of an object into Planner 5D (as long as it has a transparent background), and the service will turn it into a proper 3D object for you. We tried it on a handful of objects and the results were remarkably good.

Adding furniture is one thing, but you’ve also got options to apply different materials to your inner and out walls, along with the flooring. It’s also possible to change an object’s base material and colour. You can actually have a lot of fun with that as Planner 5D doesn't restrict you to sensible choices: want to cover your armchair in wallpaper and have a sofa made of brick? Go for it!

Planner 5D not only allows you to design a multi-storey building, you get to have fun with landscaping as well. You have lawns, plants, lighting, even greenhouses, garages and pools.

You'll find it’s pretty effortless to switch between 2D and 3D views, as you're able to do almost everything in either view: add and alter furniture, move doors and windows, the lot. The only thing we found we were unable to do in 3D was adding and resizing walls and floors, but that still gives you a great amount of options to work in the environment of your choice - nearly all the time.

  • You’re offered a generous number of options to share your work, from providing a URL of the project itself, to creating high quality renders, and even 3D walkthroughs (although those take a long time to render).

You have a few options open to you when it comes to sharing your project with others. You can print a copy of what you see, get a link so others can have a look at it online, (they’ll be able to explore, but won’t be able to alter it unless they have an account themselves), or export the design as a DWG or DXF file. If you just need to create images, you can take a basic screenshot of what you currently see, create high-resolution renders or even a video walkthrough. All options are easy to set up and organise.

All in all, Planner 5D is a very well designed service, is easy to use, and allows you to create projects very quickly. Selecting and editing objects is intuitive, and measurements are always on display when working in 2D, helping you remain accurate at all times. If there's any downside, it’s that it's a resource hog: even with nothing else open, creating a project quickly kicked in the fan on the MacBook Pro we were using for this review, and they remained for the duration (the battery took a beating too).

US Search requests a full name and an email address during the search process. Before payment, you will only see the name of the person searched (which you presumably already know), their city, and age.

The reports are displayed on a single webpage, making navigation cumbersome, as it often requires extensive scrolling. While this isn’t a significant issue, it would be preferable if the reports were provided as PDFs with a table of contents or if the US Search website included tabs for more straightforward information navigation. Additionally, US Search does not have a mobile app, and the reports retain the same elongated layout when viewed on a smartphone.

US Search doesn’t offer much in the way of support. There is not even a dedicated support page, a FAQ, nor a support portal. We also did not find a chat option, or a community forum.

You can get in touch with the company by a direct email address or a toll free phone number (between 10 am and 8 pm Eastern Standard Time, Monday to Friday, closed some holidays), but don’t expect a lot of help. The company’s representatives mostly deal with billing and account issues, and cannot assist you in finding someone using the software.

We also thought it was telling that US Search simply requires you to check a box saying that you won’t abuse its reports by stalking or harassing someone. The company doesn’t do anything to verify the identity of people using its service, but then again this is common practice and its competitors don’t vet their users either prior to providing the info.

For the price, we believe there are better people search services than US Search. For example, Instant Checkmate costs more, but the quality of its information is significantly higher and more likely to be accurate. This service also offers more comprehensive data, including bankruptcies and weapons permits, which can be particularly useful if you're searching for someone in your neighborhood.

If you need to conduct a background check for employment, you should choose a service that complies with the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). GoodHire is a solid option, though it is more expensive.

Formerly known as Webroot SecureAnywhere, now simply Webroot, used to have AntiVirus Basic, Internet Security Plus, and Webroot Complete plans, which were replaced by Essentials, Premium, and Total Protection packages, each supporting different numbers of devices and features, as well as featuring family plans.

Despite the name change, at their core remains a curious little green-toned Windows and Mac app (which turns to angry red if it encounters a threat), as well as Android and iOS support, that takes an unconventional approach to malware hunting.

Specifically, other suites have a heavy focus on detecting known malware, typically requiring a bunch of background processes and regular downloads of signature definitions, whereas Webroot spends most of its time on smart behavior monitoring to allow it to detect the latest threats as soon as they emerge.

This allows it to be amazingly compact, with the 15MB on our test computer versus 1GB and more for many suites out there. And because it’s not checking every possible file for known threats the scans are completed in a matter of seconds.

Despite its small size, Webroot still manages a lengthy feature list, including antivirus, real-time anti-phishing, an extra anti-ransomware layer, a simple firewall, network monitor, system optimization, a password manager, unlimited cloud backup, and even a VPN with its top package.

Its identity protection feature includes a set of tools designed to prevent websites and malware from accessing your data. There’s protection from keyloggers, dubious browser add-ons, cookie and website data stealing, unauthorized screen grabbers, you name it, Webroot’s got it.

The interface reports statistics about recent scans and a button to launch an on-demand scan. A panel at the right-hand side provides access to the stack’s other security features and more.

Plans and pricing

Webroot Essentials offers antivirus, anti-malware, browser protection, anti-phishing, and password manager, while covering one, three, five, or 10 PCs, Macs, smartphones, Chromebooks, or tablets at the same time, starting at $37.49 for the first year, renewing at $49.99 per year, for one device.

Next is Webroot Premium which includes everything from Essentials and throws in a system optimizer and identity protection. It can protect five devices and one identity for an individual account, or families with 10 devices and 10 identities. Plus, you’ll get up to $1 million in fraud expenses and stolen funds reimbursement. Its pricing begins at $77.99 for the opening year, renewing at $129.99.

Finally, Webroot Total Protection throws in everything that’s in Premium, while adding a secure VPN, parental controls, as well as automated cloud backup and restore with unlimited storage for one device. Its coverage is the same as that of Webroot Premium, and it’s priced at $89.99 in the first 12 months, renewing at $179.99.

There’s also a 14-day free trial that doesn’t involve you handing over your payment details, so there are no traps here.

Setup

Installing Webroot is quite straightforward and speedy, which is no surprise considering that the package is so lightweight that there’s almost nothing to do. Webroot can run happily alongside most other antivirus apps as well, with none of the usual conflicts or hassles.

As part of getting started with Webroot, you’ll need to set up an online profile, password included. The platform demands a highly robust password and signing in requires that you successfully perform the traditional CAPTCHA testing.

After setup is complete, Webroot launches, runs an initial system scan, and begins actively monitoring your system. Now you can also run your own system scan, which took under a minute on our test PC but still managed to find a couple of items that other antivirus products typically ignore. The app allows you to review or deal with any findings in a click or two and proceed to leave Webroot protecting your device.

Whatever you’re doing, you won’t even notice Webroot doing its thing, as it doesn’t have any real impact on your system resources. In fact, it only added two background processes - one user application and one service, which usually consumed under 10MB of RAM, just about as undemanding as an antivirus can be.

You can also examine your protected devices from Webroot’s browser console and make sure their protective shields are active. Here you can also access your subscriptions and renew them if needed.

Antivirus

Webroot has a bit more cluttered interface than some of its competitors, featuring panels, icons, switches, tiny buttons, and plenty of text, but it is all neatly organized and decently straightforward, so it doesn’t impact user experience drastically.

The app starts protecting you immediately as it’s installed and the Scan My Computer button is pretty prominent, making it clear what you need to do from the get-go.

That said, locating other features can be a bit more tricky. For instance, there are multiple scan types, including Quick (RAM only), Full (local hard drives), Deep (searching for rootkits, Trojans, and more), and Custom (scanning specific files or folders), but you wouldn’t know it as they’re buried in the interface.

You’ll need to click on the little cog icon next to PC Security > Scan & Shields > Custom Scan to see what’s on offer.

Webroot will also add a right-click option to scan any file or folder in the Explorer (‘Scan with Webroot’) and you’ll be able to have the antivirus check them out even as another scan is already in progress.

That said, whichever scan you choose, you can be sure it’ll be speedy in the extreme. The Quick Scan lives up to its name, completing in a matter of seconds. The intensive Deep Scan won’t take much of your time either - taking a little under three minutes, and the rest were somewhere in between.

Features

Webroot’s URL filtering comes in the form of the Web Threat Shield browser extension that the app installs automatically on your default browser (Chrome, Edge, or Firefox). It features browser annotations (showing the reputation of the site you’re visiting), search annotations (reputation of pages in your search results), and real-time protection from malicious sites, including those with phishing tools.

When it comes to the latter (phishing websites that try to trick you into revealing your login credentials so they can get access to your bank account, online shopping account, or social media profiles), Webroot also does a pretty good job with its Phishing Shield, which you can turn on and off in its Settings.

The program also offers what Webroot calls a firewall, but it doesn’t have much configurability we see with some of the competition. Instead, it does most of the heavy lifting by itself, looking out for new and untrusted processes connecting to the internet, alerting you about new connections made by untrusted applications, and asking you to approve or deny them.

Running apps are categorized into good, bad, and unknown and the firewall fortifies itself when Webroot identifies an active infection, asking for permission to run unknown programs while leaving regular activities like web browsing to continue uninterrupted. When there’s no current emergency, it doesn’t interfere with programs trying to access the network.

Experts won’t be impressed by the lack of control and it doesn’t put your system’s ports in stealth mode (leaving it up for the Windows Firewall to deal with, which it does), with all the apps present before installing Webroot considered trusted by default. However, otherwise, this is a welcome and unusual addition to any antivirus package.

All packages also feature a password manager courtesy of top-of-the-line LastPass, with all of its expected features, although its security track record hasn’t done it a service (we’re talking about the 2022 breach that is still wreaking havoc across the board).

Then there’s the SafeStart Sandbox that experts will appreciate and that we didn’t expect Webroot to have. Specifically, if you’re an avid antivirus researcher, you can use this feature to run dubious programs in an isolated environment under detailed customizable limitations, making it impossible for them to modify your system.

The Antimalware Tools dialog provides a utility to remove suspect programs manually, along with their associated Registry entries. While it’s not a full uninstaller, it could be handy and isn’t something we’ve seen from other vendors.

Here, you can also access convenient system repair features to fix the damage left behind after malware remediation, which includes an option to ‘Set system policies to defaults,’ fixing Task Manager, Regedit, or another imposed policy-type restriction with a click. You can also reboot the device into Safe Mode, deal with malware-modified desktop background, or reset your screensaver.

Upgrade to the Premium plan, and you’re getting a handy system optimizer tool in the Utilities section of the main window and in settings that let you select data to clean up whenever it runs, either on-demand or on a schedule. The scheduler may run on a daily or weekly basis, or at a regular interval, up to every 24 hours.

The Optimizer can also quickly wipe out useless files, freeing up the space previously occupied by them, but there’s no preview of what it plans to delete, nor do you get a report upon completion. However, you can see a blow-by-blow list of things it removed by going to the platform’s settings and System Optimizer and pressing the View Log button at the bottom right.

That said, don’t worry, it’s only temporary files and the Recycle Bin. More advanced users can configure the Optimizer to erase other types of data, like login history, storage folder for files burned to CD or DVD, and memory dump files.

On top of that, Premium also adds automatic deletion of your web activities, while Total Protection throws in an online backup service with unlimited secure storage for one PC or Mac (courtesy of Carbonite - OpenText owns both Webroot and Carbonite).

Protection

In terms of independent testing, neither AV-Comparatives nor AV-Tests have covered Webroot for years due to incompatibility, like Webroot’s prohibition of sending personal data to the internet and keeping a journal of reversible actions while awaiting a verdict from Webroot’s cloud analysis system.

We had more luck with SE Labs, which includes Webroot in its Home Protection tests.

Specifically, during the SE Labs’ Q4 2024 Home Protection test, Webroot rated eighth, with a Total Accuracy Rating of 97% and the top AAA award from SE Labs. However, it ranked lower than Avast Free Antivirus, Kaspersky Premium, McAfee Total Protection, Norton LifeLock Norton360, and Sophos Home Premium, which all scored 100%, as well as Panda Dome with 99% and Microsoft Defender at 98%.

Webroot also features handy built-in anti-ransomware capabilities and may even roll back the effects of encrypting ransomware in some cases (though not malware that encrypts or wipes the whole drive). That is, if it even manages to get past all the other layers of protection. That said, this comes with a disclaimer - the company itself warns that the success depends on available drive space.

Final verdict

Webroot is an exceptionally lightweight antivirus with accurate URL blocking and powerful bonus features, but test results show it may not be as accurate as the top players in the antivirus field. Still, it runs surprisingly easily alongside other antivirus products, perhaps allowing you to run it alongside Microsoft Defender, which would do a great job of keeping you safe.
