CapCut review

Since its release in 2020, CapCut has taken the short-form video world by storm. The fact it’s owned by ByteDance Ltd, the same company which also owns TikTok, might have helped in that regard.

Starting life on iPhone and Android devices, it quickly became one of the best video editing apps out there, adding a web-based editor, and most recently, a desktop video editor for both Mac and Windows. For this review, we’re looking at where it all began: mobile video editing.

CapCut: Pricing & plans

  • It’s free for most tools, but some advanced features are locked behind a subscription

The basic CapCut editor is free, although this might make you think you don’t get much for nothing. Quite the contrary: CapCut is a very capable and feature-rich editor, as we’ll explore further below. You don’t even need to create an account in order to start using it: just launch the app, import some footage and away you go.

There is however a ‘Pro’ version of this video editor, but to explore its capabilities, you need to register. Pro offers you 100GB of online storage, and grants you access to a variety of advanced features, such as improving the quality of old photographs, upscaling video, removing flicker, image noise, and a bunch of transitions.

You can get all of this through an ongoing annual or monthly subscription - but it’s not especially cheap. Considering LumaFusion offers you a pro-level mobile video editing experience for a one-off price of $30, maybe CapCut are relying on their market penetration to convince people to subscribe to their business model.

CapCut: Shortcuts

CapCut mobile video editing app during our testing

Use some shortcuts to commonly used features, or simply tap on ‘New Project’ to start from scratch (Image credit: Bytedance)
  • A useful list of ready-made templates and actions to help you speed up the creation process… but why does CapCut demand access to our entire Photos library to allow you to do this?

When you first launch CapCut you’ll find the interface filled with icons to take you to commonly performed actions, such as Ad Maker, Product Photo and Retouch. The Ad Maker grants you access to templates you can use to create adverts in seconds, applying your own clips on top of the chosen template. It lets the software do a lot of the work for you, but there is a puzzling request.

Usually, you can instruct apps to gain access to all your Photos library, or choose the select few it can view. All pretty straightforward, and leaves the user in full control of what the software can see. Here, although you can manage the shots you wish CapCut to use, this only applies when creating a project from scratch.

If you want to use one of these shortcuts, CapCut puzzlingly needs to see your entire library. Now this might concern only a handful of people, but we thought it worthwhile for the privacy-conscious among you, to know those shortcuts and templates may be worth avoiding. There is no technical reason for this request, and it makes us wonder what else the software might do with your photographs and video clips.

CapCut: Interface

CapCut mobile video editing app during our testing

Even on a tablet the interface restricts you to the portrait orientation (Image credit: Bytedance)
  • A simple interface, stuck in one orientation, but everything you need to get working is there

Whether you choose one of these template shortcuts, or wish to start a new project from scratch, you’ll eventually end up in CapCut’s main editing interface.

It’s solely designed for your device to be held in portrait orientation. If you turn your phone horizontally, the interface won’t budge. The same happens when working on a tablet. There’s also no way to change the layout - you’re stuck with it, whether you like it or not. But frankly, there’s little to dislike. The top third is devoted to a preview of your project. Beneath that is your timeline, and at the bottom, is a row of tools for you to use.

There’s a button to let you preview your work in full screen (and in landscape), but no editing is possible in that orientation. You don’t even have access to any tools, aside from a playback button.

CapCut mobile video editing app during our testing

There’s a wealth of transitions for you to use - some are ‘Pro’ but most are free, and look great (Image credit: Bytedance)

You’ll notice a sign, top right, showing you the resolution you’re working in. By default it’s set to 1080p, but you can change that from as low as 480p to as high as 2K/4K. This is where you can also alter the frame rate from 24fps to 60fps. When some apps restrict 4K editing behind a paywall, it’s nice to see it’s available here for free.

You can also tell this app is aimed at, shall we say, those with sharp eyesight. The icons’ labels, especially those for the tools at the bottom, are in an extremely fine print, making it a challenge for the less visually acute. We did find the size is perfect on a tablet though.

  • Interface: 4/5

CapCut: Tools

CapCut mobile video editing app during our testing

The green screen cut-out tool is very effective and so simple to use (Image credit: Bytedance)
  • Very easy to use, with surprising quality and accuracy, with a direct upload to TikTok

You’ll find it’s incredibly simple to edit, trim, and split footage. It’s just as easy to add clips, and quickly build a project. You can’t work with multiple layers except in the form of an overlay, where a second clip is added on top of another, which you can resize and reposition in order to create a picture-in-picture effect, or use the ‘Cutout’ tool to remove the background, be it a green screen, or just whatever was behind you.

The Pro tools are reportedly much better, but truth be told, we found what’s on offer for free to be remarkable - both in its ease of use and in the impressive results. Just check out the ‘Speed’ options to alter the duration of a clip, which are a cinch to alter, and include the ability to perform complex changes with just a few taps and drags.

Don’t have a green screen? CapCut can also remove any background with ease (Image credit: Bytedance)

The audio tools are quite interesting, and include a vast array of sound effects, and a whole section devoted to Sounds, which are clips of songs.

Some of the ‘Commercial’ sections have apparently been licensed for commercial use on CapCut and TikTok, whereas the other section supposedly isn’t… even though we found some clips were present on both sides of the aisle.

There’s also a VoiceOver option for you to record audio directly into your project using your device’s built-in microphone, or any other external one connected to it.

CapCut mobile video editing app during our testing

The auto-captioning tool is a standout feature (Image credit: Bytedance)

Another feature we were most impressed with was the amazing Auto Captions tool. It will analyse your video for you and generate captions, and in our experience, even when whispering, the output was incredibly accurate. Even if there’s the odd glitch, editing them is as simple as tapping on the subtitle box in the timeline, followed by tapping on the text in the main preview section.

When you’re done and it’s time to export your work. You can upload directly to your TikTok account, or save it to your Photos library, where you can share it to other platforms.

Should I try?

Try it if...

Your world is TikTok and you want a video editor that’s fully integrated with that platform, you like having loads of powerful tools for free, and like the idea of subscribing for additional editing features.

Don't try it if...

You have concerns about the app’s privacy aspects, and would like an app that works in any orientation.

CapCut: Alternatives

We've tested,. reviewed, and rated a massive range of video editing tools. For alternatives to CapCut, we recommend checking out the iOS version of Apple iMovie and LumaFusion.

LumaFusion review

Author: admin | Category: Computers Gadgets Pro Software & Services | Comments: Off

Editing on a computer is one thing, but why not edit on the phone or tablet you used to shoot your movie in the first place? This is nothing new, as ever since coders realised a phone was powerful enough to do some editing on it, we’ve been able to do that. But how far can that particular envelope be pushed? For instance, Final Cut Pro has finally made it to the iPad, but only on tablets with M1 chips or better.

But they’re actually late to the party. One of the best video editing apps, LumaTouch’s LumaFusion, launched in 2016, and provides many advanced video editing features across loads of different iPads, iPhones, and Android devices.

LumaFusion: Pricing & plans

  • Great balance - a simple, one-off price with some optional add-ons for those who want or need them

LumaFusion isn’t free video editing software. And it’s not easy to compete in a field where many of your competitors offer their apps for free with ads, in-app purchases, or ongoing subscription.

But if you’re in the market for an advanced professional-level video editor in your pocket, you might well find the $30 cost to be more than justified. And that’s a one-off fee, no never-ending subscriptions, with all future updates included in the price.

There are some in-app purchases as well, but these are for some advanced features that most will not need, so it makes sense to include them as optional add-ons. There are currently three available:

Multicam Studio automatically synchronises up to 6 sources for you, letting you tap to switch between cameras, thus editing on the fly, for $20.

Export to Apple Final Cut Pro transforms all the work you’ve done on your project’s timeline into an FCPXML file, which, along with all the media you’ve used, is merged into a single file, ready for you to transfer to your Mac to carry on editing on Final Cut Pro… for $20. A kind of alternative to subscribing to Final Cut Pro for iPad.

And finally, we have the Storyblocks library, offering royalty-free music samples, songs, sound effects, videos, and backgrounds right from within the LumaFusion interface. This one’s a subscription, being either $10 a month, or $70 for the year.

  • Pricing & plans: 4.5/5

LumaFusion: Interface

LumaTouch LumaFusion mobile video editing app during our testing

  • Sleek interface in any orientation, looks great on large and small screens with good keyboard integration, although it’s not necessary to edit

The designers at LumaTouch have done an excellent job here. The interface works great whether you’re working on a tablet or a phone, and in either portrait or landscape orientations. There’s even a way to choose between six different layouts as well. Everything works flawlessly, with panels resizing and reorganising themselves instantly whichever layout you choose and however you’re holding your device.

The interface is divided into sections. One’s the Preview, where you get to see your work as you build your edit, another’s the Timeline, where you add your clips, and essentially create your film, and the last one is where you access various elements, such as your clips, titles, transitions, effects, etc.

If you’re familiar with the best video editing software on desktops, you’ll feel right at home in LumaFusion. And if you’re in the market for one of the best video editing software for beginners on mobile, we really liked to see the app offer a series of tutorials to help you quickly understand the interface. It’s all very welcoming, whatever your experience level.

Should you need to change the parameters of a particular clip in your timeline, simply double-tap on it. The interface will be replaced with your clip and all its alterable parameters. As you’d expect, you can also keyframe these, changing their values over time.

If you’re working on a tablet, you can hook up to a keyboard, and take advantage of various keyboard shortcuts, many of which are pretty much industry standard, like setting in and out points (‘i’ and ‘o’ respectively), adding a marker (‘m’), jump to the beginning or end of a clip (the ‘up’ and ‘down’ arrows), and so on. You certainly don’t need a keyboard to work with LumaFusion, but it grants you additional functionality if you have one.

  • Interface: 4.5/5

LumaFusion: Video editing

  • Great responsiveness, coupled with ease of use and loads of features - LumaFusion offers a lot and does it all exceedingly well.

Dragging and dropping is pretty much ubiquitous throughout the interface. Which isn’t surprising since it’s designed for touch. And here it works exceedingly well.

You’re able to work with up to six video layers and six additional audio tracks, allowing you to create fairly complex video sequences. Your timeline’s first layer has a ‘magnetic’ effect, which means that if you delete a clip, all subsequent ones will automatically move to the left to fill the gap left by the now-missing clip. This is a standard feature on Final Cut Pro and some others, and not only makes editing much faster, as you don’t have to deal with unwanted gaps in your project, but having to move all your clips by touch would be unbelievably tedious.

There’s a miniaturised timeline directly beneath the preview section. This represents your entire project. It is very useful to have when you’re zoomed into the timeline itself, as you can always see where you are within your project at a glance. It’s also a great way to scroll through your project, and see how all your clips are placed.

Your media can be accessed either from your device’s Photos app, a connected drive if you’re on tablet, and most of the best cloud storage providers. This includes services such as DropBox, Google Drive, OneDrive, and iCloud.

LumaTouch LumaFusion mobile video editing app during our testing

Editing videos felt surprisingly easy, even on a phone’s relatively small screen (although admittedly, the larger the screen, the easier it is to work). Rendering is pretty fast. The app even lets you work with 4K clips, and we can tell you, it handles these high-resolution clips with ease.

It’s not loaded with the best VFX software, but you will find a good number of transitions, titles, and visual and audio filters are available, and pretty much everything (aside from transitions) can be keyframed and altered over time, including colour correction effects. In addition to that, there’s all the usual tools you’d expect from such an application, like trimming and cutting, chroma and luma keys, and even a built-in image stabiliser.

One thing we really liked was how you’re given the ability to create your own presets, for anything like titles or keyframed effects for instance. This allows you to have at your disposal unique looks that you can reuse in other projects, greatly saving you time, and helping set a unique tone for yourself across your videos. You can also export these presets, and import other ones.

Once you’re done, you’ve the option to save your work back to your device’s photos app, send it to an online storage service, or publish it directly to YouTube or Vimeo.

  • Video editing: 4.5/5

LumaFusion: Verdict

LumaTouch LumaFusion mobile video editing app during our testing

LumaTouch has done an impeccable job packing in professional-grade video editing tools into an app like this. And somehow, it feels like the most natural thing in the world.

If we had to nitpick, we could ask why we need to select “original” in the colour filters in order to gain access to a clip's colour parameters? Why can’t those values be available as you select the ‘colour and effects’ option, saving you a tap? And LumaFusion does put your battery to the test, but to be fair, this sort of software will chew through batteries on the best video editing laptops, let alone a phone.

LumaFusion is a great piece of software and the designers have done a remarkable job fitting a powerful editing studio in your phone or tablet. Add to that the fact this app gets regularly updated, and you’ve got a hit on your hands. If you’re serious about editing on the go, give LumaFusion some serious consideration.

The Minisforum UM780 XTX boasts a sleek, compact design with a magnetic top cover that enables you to personalise the top with engraved plates. It's a nifty purely antithetic feature that certainly has appeal, especially if you couple this with the XTOOLS P2 or a similar high-end laser engraver.

When it comes to mounting options, this mini PC offers a good amount of versatility, including vertical and wall mounting, fitting neatly into any workspace or desktop. The overall design is slick and high-end with a distinctive design; while not ultra-compact compared with some Mini PCs, it encases an impressive amount of power and expansion options.

When it comes to connectivity, this is where the Minisforum UM780 XTX really stands out, with two Type A and one Type C USB on the front alongside the audio out and CMOS reset. All the main connectors have a good choice of video-out options with HDMI, DPI, and USB 4 alongside two network sockets and two USB Type-A.

With a full metal build that helps to keep things cool when under pressure and the ability to quickly access the inner workings through the top with simple tools and one slightly fiddly to remove and attach cable, this Mini PC offers great performance out of the box, but is designed to be upgradable if you feel the need.

Minisforum UM780 XTX: Features

MinisForum UM780 XTX Review

The Minisforum UM780 XTX is designed to cater to gaming enthusiasts, creative professionals or anyone looking for a Mini PC that has a bit of power. One of its standout features is the OCulink interface, which allows users to connect an external graphics card, significantly boosting the system's graphical capabilities. This makes it a flexible solution for users who may need extra graphical power for high-end gaming or GPU-accelerated tasks such as Premiere Pro (or any of the best Adobe Premiere Pro alternatives for that matter).

At the heart of the UM780 XTX is the AMD Ryzen™ 7 7840HS processor, which boasts 8 cores and 16 threads, with a maximum clock speed reaching an impressive 5.1GHz. This high-performance CPU ensures that the system can handle demanding applications, multitasking, and advanced gaming scenarios with ease. The processor's speed and efficiency are particularly beneficial for tasks that require significant computational power, such as video editing, 3D rendering, and running complex simulations.

Complementing the powerful CPU is the AMD Radeon™ 780M GPU. With its maximum frequency reaching 2700 MHz, it offers substantial graphics processing power. This GPU is well-suited for creative tasks like photo editing in Photoshop, video editing in Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve, and using the best graphic design software.

Throughout, it provides smooth rendering and quick previewing capabilities. Essentially, paired with any of the best video editing monitors or the best monitors for graphic design, you'll be an unstoppable creative force. When it comes to gaming, the GPUs are able to handle the latest titles with the option to add an external GPU if you need a little more graphics processing power.

Inside is the dual-channel DDR5 memory support, which, when combined with the system's two M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 SSD slots, provides exceptionally fast data access and storage speeds, again a feature for both gaming and creative tasks. This configuration is ideal for professionals who deal with large files and require quick data transfer rates, such as video editors working with 4K RAW high-resolution footage or graphic designers handling large design files.

The Minisforum UM780 XTX also boasts an advanced cooling system to maintain optimal performance. The CPU is made of liquid metal material, and the system includes a high-silence intelligent cooling fan. This setup ensures that even under heavy workloads, the device operates smoothly and without overheating. Effective heat dissipation is crucial for maintaining the longevity of the components and ensuring stable performance during extended gaming sessions or while running resource-intensive applications.

Additionally, the dual 2.5G RJ45 ports provide versatile connectivity options, enabling fast data transfer and a stable network connection. This feature is particularly useful for collaborative work environments where quick file sharing and stable internet connections are essential. It also benefits gamers who require a high-speed, lag-free online gaming experience.

Finally, the Minisforum UM780 XTX metal casing not only adds to its aesthetic appeal but also plays a crucial role in heat dissipation, further enhancing the system's cooling efficiency. The durable build quality also means that it's highly portable, making it a great onsite solution for video plugged into an electric power generator or easy to transport for network gaming.

The performance of the Minisforum UM780 XTX is exceptional, reflecting the quality of the build and hardware specifications. In office environments, this mini PC excels, easily keeping pace with the demands of various software suites. Its swift processing capabilities ensure that applications like Microsoft Office run seamlessly, and you can switch between Word, Excel and other applications without any lag or slowdown. As a space-saving alternative to the best business laptops (and certainly the best business computers), this mini PC is easily ready for business.

When it comes to more demanding tasks like graphic design and photo editing, the UM780 XTX demonstrates that extra level of power. Yes, you will want the best monitor for photo editing for best results. But we found testing with Adobe Photoshop, particularly with RAW image files from high-resolution cameras like the Canon EOS R5 C and Sony A7 IV, the mini PC handles the enhancement of these images singularly and in batch well.

The mini PC's performance extends impressively to video editing as well. Working with RAW Lite footage from the Canon EOS R5 C, the UM780 XTX manages the data-intensive task with relative ease. However, it's worth noting that the built-in storage capacity can fill up quickly when dealing with such high-level video files. Fortunately, the USB Type-C port enables a large SSD storage platform to be attached while maintaining superb transfer speeds.

Gaming on the UM780 XTX is also a good experience, with most games running smoothly at decent framerates, thanks to the combined power of the AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS processor and AMD Radeon 780M GPU.

The integration of the OCulink interface, which allows the connection of an external GPU, helps boost gaming and video rendering. By plugging in an external GPU, you can run games at higher framerates and resolutions.

  • Performance: 4/5

Should you buy the Minisforum UM780 XTX?

The Minisforum UM780 XTX stands out as a high-performance mini PC suitable for a wide range of applications. From everyday office tasks to graphic-intensive gaming and professional creative work, it offers a level of versatility and power that is rare in compact PC solutions. Not only that, but you can fully customise the look and style of this Mini PC with the addition of the magnetic engraved top plate!

Whether it's seamless multitasking, handling large RAW image files, editing high-resolution video, or enjoying high-end gaming, the UM780 XTX consistently delivers top-notch performance.

Its blend of high-performance components, expandable memory and storage, and versatile connectivity make it a top contender in its class. However, its price point and design might limit its appeal to a niche market of enthusiasts and professionals.

  • Value: High-end performance at a reasonable price. (4.5/5)
  • Design: Compact, stylish with a customizable top cover. (4/5)
  • Features: Advanced technology, expandable, with innovative connectivity. (4.5/5)
  • Performance: Stellar in both professional and gaming use. (4.5/5)
  • Total: Powerful, versatile mini PC for diverse applications. (4.5/5)

Paris Rhone SP005 True 4K Projector review
9:37 pm | November 28, 2023

Author: admin | Category: Computers Gadgets Pro | Comments: Off

Paris Rhone SP005: 30-second review

The Paris Rhône SP005 True 4K Projector appears to be a promising offering, combining professional styling and potent projection capabilities at a reasonable price. Initial impressions are favourable, with decent build quality that, although plastic, is well-finished and designed.

The initial setup is straightforward, offering configurations for table, ceiling, rear ceiling, or rear projection, all manageable via an easy-to-use interface. Upon startup, the auto-focus and keystone correction engage, adapting to the projection area. While the focus is precise, with manual adjustment available, keystone correction often needs slight manual tweaking. Using a dedicated projection screen improves accuracy, but this projector ideally requires a central placement without any off-centre correction.

The Android TV integration initially seems well-conceived, and the quality of the projection, even at 600 ANSI Lumens, is adequate for a darkened room. However, issues arise with installed apps like iPlayer, Disney+, and Netflix. The integration becomes less user-friendly due to awkward cursor-style navigation and general instability.

Incorporating an HDMI Fire Stick or a similar device can alleviate these issues, transforming the projector experience. The projection quality is commendable, albeit slightly less intense than expected for a device of its size. While fan noise is noticeable, the powerful speakers effectively mask it.

We've tested out the best 4K projectors and the best business projectors, and overall, this model offers decent 4K resolution and sound, but it's advisable to consider an alternative to the built-in Android TV.

  • How much does it cost? Starting from $699
  • When is it out? Available now
  • Where can you get it? You can get it directly from  Paris Rhone. Amazon.com, and other online resellers

The Paris Rhone SP005 True 4K Projector has just gone on sale and can be purchased directly from the Paris Rhone website or Amazon.com for the early bird price of $699. Considering that this is a 4K projector, that price isn't at all bad and well below what you would usually expect to pay for a projector of this type.

  • Value: 4 / 5

Paris Rhone SP005: Specifications

At the budget end of the market, the projector lacks cutting-edge technology, chips, or processors to boast about. However, offering 4K resolution at this price point is impressive. Its 600 ANSI Lumens fall short of many standard 4K projectors, and with Android TV 9.0 instead of the more up-to-date 11, it's clear that compromises were made to meet a budget.

Taking these limitations into account, along with the inclusion of two very respectable 25W built-in speakers, the price and features begin to seem more balanced. However, this does represent a compromise.

The Magnesium Alloy casing of the SP005 gives the projector an instantly premium feel. Its size and weight are reassuring, and if there were any doubts about the projector's prestige, the fabric-covered front around the large projection lens stylishly dispels them.

However, the Paris Rhône SP005 is at the budget end of the market. While the design and features impress upon unboxing, the specifications start to justify the low price tag.

That said, with a native 3840x2160 resolution, this projector firmly falls into the 4K category. There are few projectors currently available with this feature set that can match what's on offer. The 4K projection is further enhanced by HDR 10+ support and 600 ANSI lumens of brightness, making it more suitable for evening or curtain-closed environments for optimal viewing.

Even with 600 lumens of brightness, it's sufficient to project a 200" diagonal display comfortably. The integrated innovative blue light reduction technology ensures the projected images are clear and crisp.

One of the standout features, alongside the 4K resolution, is the dual 12W speakers. Paris Rhône emphasizes these and the audio quality of the projector, contributing to an immersive cinematic experience.

For ease of use, the projector includes automatic focus, keystone correction, and intelligent obstacle avoidance, allowing quick adaptation to the environment. Manual adjustments are also easily accessible for those who prefer them.

Preinstalled with Android TV 9.0, the projector offers access to a vast selection of apps, from Netflix to Amazon Prime. Ultra-fast WiFi-6 and Bluetooth 5.0 support for controller and Bluetooth connections, along with an array of ports including HDMI 2.1 and USB-C, expand its usability.

The design of the SP005 is stylish and looks the same. The features, though somewhat limited in bulb brightness, are acceptable for the price, especially for nighttime viewing.

  • Effective Auto-Focus
  • Mixed Keystone Accuracy
  • Subpar Android Integration

Compared to the slick and stylish exterior, the actual use of the projector offers a contrast. The initial setup is straightforward, with an easy Wi-Fi network connection and quick overall navigation.

The bulb's brightness, compared to more expensive projectors, is instantly apparent, necessitating drawn curtains for a decent picture. Once light levels are sufficient, the quality of the 4K projection is good, despite some noticeable softening towards the edges of the projection area. It's important to position the projector squarely on the wall rather than at an angle.

Upon switching on, the auto-focus and keystone correction kick in. Generally, the focus is accurate, providing sharp images quickly, though with noticeable whirring sounds. Keystone correction was hit-and-miss, with manual adjustment of the four corner points often yielding the best results.

The object avoidance feature also had mixed success, leading to a preference for manual adjustment. A surprising aspect was the need to repeat the focus and projection setup each time the projector was turned on, though this could be turned off in the settings.

Installing apps is easy, but the implementation of Android 9.0 TV limits direct interaction with apps like Netflix to cursor navigation only, inhibiting browsing capability. Using an external device like a Firestick offers a more user-friendly experience.

HDMI connection simplifies usage significantly. Connecting an iPhone via USB-C works well for visuals but omits audio, which can be connected via Bluetooth 5.0 or, more effectively, through a traditional AUX 3.5mm cable. The Apple Multi Connector offers a better option for delivering both visuals and audio.

Overall, the performance of the SP005 doesn't fully meet expectations. The professional appearance isn't matched by usability, although the audio and projection quality are good. Noise levels are higher compared to other projectors like Sony, Epson, and XGIMI, but once a movie starts, it becomes less noticeable.

Considering its price as a straightforward 4K projector with numerous connection options, it offers great value. The attempt to enhance it with Android TV falls short, needing a firmware fix for improvement. However, using an external TV device via HDMI works well, and the 25W speakers are impressive, though a high-quality speaker set, ideally from our list of the best Dolby Atmos Speakers, is recommended.

  • Performance: 2.5 / 5

Paris Rhone SP005: Verdict

Throughout the test period, this projector's price fluctuated from the full $699 to a more reasonable $499. The features and specifications seem to justify the higher price tag. However, the execution of Android TV is subpar, and numerous issues with Bluetooth connectivity and software glitches in the apps don't quite support the full smart projector price.

However, if you overlook the Android TV and other smart features, what remains is a very competent 4K projector with an excellent set of speakers. Connect your preferred media source, and you have a budget-friendly, well-built 4K projector.

If you're in the market for a smart 4K projector, investing a bit more for a more up-to-date and powerful model is advisable. But for occasional use with external media sources and a limited budget, this projector is an excellent choice.

How did I test

When it comes to projectors, at least five variables come into play to determine the viewing experience out of the box:

I employ a professional projection screen in lecture theatres and studios for photo and video workshops. At home, I utilize a wall painted specifically for evening viewing.

For my video viewing experience, I delved into a backlog of Edgar Wright movies and the excellent series "Lockwood & Co.", mixing action with special effects, challenging the projector's lamp and electronics. I also showcased the 2020 LG OLED video, a robust test of the projector's handling of black areas. The testing environments included:

Munbyn IRT09: 30-second review

The Munbyn IRT09J Rugged Windows tablet couldn't be anything other than tough, with its large screen surrounded by a rubberised plastic edge and all buttons and ports either sealed or sealable to ensure a water resistant design. Even the small fan is been water resistant although this doesn't mean it can be submerged under water.

Installed with Windows 11 Pro, the tablet is fast and responsive, thriving on the work-focused platform. The large 12.2" screen is surprisingly easy to navigate. At the same time, the touchscreen isn't as sensitive as some tablets, which actually works in its favour for the intended market.

Scrolling through spreadsheets and typing up reports is smooth and fluid, with a little configuration for the pop-up on-screen keyboard required initially to enable an easy workflow. The screen is incredibly well-balanced, and colour and contrast can all be adjusted through the Windows OS.

When it comes to web browsing, the tablet is once again fast, connecting and rendering web pages quickly. Likewise, a quick check and catch-up with YouTube and Netflix showed that video playback is well-handled. Focusing back on work, a quick Google Meet and Teams call to check in went well, with the tablet picking up audio and the small speakers pushing out just enough sound to make it workable.

We've hand-tested many of the best rugged tablets, and while the machine might not have the processing power to play games more involved than Solitaire, this is, after all, a work-focused tablet rather than one for recreational purposes. To that end, the tablet is tough, surviving being soaked in water and dropped from a height, so it should stand up to working life.

  • Robust
  • Touch Screen
  • Interchangeable Battery

Like the best rugged smartphones and the best rugged laptops, the Munbyn IRT09J is unmistakably tough, with a rubberised plastic surround dotted with water resistant covers to help keep everything inside dry.

While the outer design is tough with an aesthetic that emphasises this feature, the build quality is aimed at everyday professional users needing a durable tablet in relatively safe environments.

The plastic finish offers ample protection against dusty, uneven surfaces, and the tablet can withstand dirt and dust without much concern. If it gets dropped or soaked, scenarios that would typically damage even the best business tablets, the Munbyn IRT09J Rugged Windows Tablet can withstand these knocks.

The touchscreen interface of Windows 11 Pro is quite good, with the 12.2-inch screen providing sufficient space for easy navigation and selection. The screen's responsiveness is adequate for professional use, even if not as sensitive as a smartphone or consumer-level tablet.

The included pen offers a faster, more precise way to navigate the touch screen, which is particularly beneficial for those with larger hands.

Typing documents and working with Excel sheets is smooth, although the automatic pop-up of the keyboard can occasionally fail. However, a shortcut to the keyboard on the taskbar solves this issue, and the pop-up keyboard, covering about half the screen, has decent-sized buttons that respond well to typing.

Handling the tablet is facilitated by four connection points for the fabric hand grip, allowing easy operation while walking or on location. There are also various accessories for vehicle mounting and carrying, including back straps, shoulder straps, and a docking station.

Other notable handling features include the fingerprint access pad for easy login and five quick access buttons on the side, including a scanning button that, with the right software, enables barcode scanning using the front or rear cameras.

Munbyn IRT09J: Features

  •  Intel JASPER LAKE N5105 Processor
  • Windows 11 PRO

The MUNBYN IRT09J Rugged Windows Tablet is a robust tablet designed for professional environments, not consumer use. It features a 12.2-inch Full HD IPS screen with a brightness of 650 nits, making it an ideal solution for outdoor use. Powering the IRT09J is an Intel JASPER LAKE N5105 processor with a clock speed of up to 2.9GHz, which is more than sufficient for all Microsoft Office and equivalent tasks for which the tablet is designed.

As standard, the tablet comes equipped with 16GB RAM and a removable SSD (128GB standard, with options up to 512GB). Access to the SSD is through one of the water-resistant covers that are securely fastened on the back of the machine. To ensure the robustness of the design, the tablet features a water resistant fan and a large finned heat sink, contributing to its excellent heat dissipation capabilities.

Wireless connectivity includes dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, and optional 4G and NFC. For navigation and location-based tasks, it includes GPS/Glonass support. The dual battery system, featuring a large 6300mAh battery alongside a smaller 700mAh unit, provides extended usage without frequent charging.

In terms of ruggedness, the IRT09J meets MIL-STD-810G standards. It has an IP65 rating, ensuring durability against drops, extreme temperatures, and environmental conditions that would be beyond the survivability of most other laptops and tablets. It also includes a range of ports and expansion options, such as USB 3.0, Type C, HDMI, and options for Ethernet, RS232, and QR code scanning, enhancing its utility in various industrial scenarios.

The tablet features a 5MP front and 8MP rear camera setup, suitable for capturing detailed photos and videos in the field. Its design is user-friendly and functional, with a capacitive touch panel that supports multi-touch and is responsive even in demanding situations, including rain.

The IRT09J's versatility is further enhanced by its range of optional accessories, including adapters, car chargers, vehicle mounts, and docking chargers, making it a highly adaptable device for industries like warehousing, logistics, aerospace, and healthcare.

Munbyn IRT09J: Performance

Munbyn IRT09

  • Relatively slow
  • Low graphics scores

The Munbyn IRT09J Rugged Windows Tablet is designed with the industry in mind, and its processor and graphics performance align well with the intended market. While the tablet might not achieve the high-performance scores expected of a mainstream device, the scores it has achieved are well-rounded and ideal for anyone prioritizing office duties over gaming or creative applications.

The graphics and processing speeds were moderate, which essentially means that most modern games are unplayable, with single-digit frame rates at best.

When it comes to office duties, the processor, graphics, SSD, and RAM align with the ideal requirements and operate smoothly, with a PC Mark score of 2232. While this score is on the low side, it's in line with a desktop PC from 2016 and more than sufficient for most warehouse and field administration work.

On the performance front, where this tablet excels is with its durability and additional features. Being able to swap out the battery is a major feature; other tablets might allow for fast charging, but when you're on-site, what you need is instant power. Likewise, the inclusion of hand grip mounts for single-handed operation, a quick scan button, and front and rear cameras all add up to a valuable feature set for industry use.

Then there's the robustness, drop-proofing, and water resistance, which, while they don't add to the machine's speed, do enhance its overall performance as a work tool.

The water resistance is a great feature, and through the test survived a moderated soaking in rain and at the end of a hose spray, however, the IP65 rating means that while this device is water resistant it is not waterproof so cannot be submerged under water.

When wet the touch screen stops functioning due to the capacitative design, however, once wiped dry the functionality returns.

After a particularly heavy dousing of water, there was some sign of water ingress when removing the battery. So while the tablet can withstand more than most you should still be careful when using it in particularly heavy rain.

Munbyn IRT09J: Verdict

The Munbyn IRT09J Rugged Windows Tablet is a sturdy and reliable device tailored for professional use in challenging environments. Its 12.2-inch screen, robust Intel processor, ample RAM, and sizable SSD make it adept for a range of tasks, particularly in outdoor, warehouse, and industrial settings.

While it may not be suited for high-end gaming or creative tasks, its performance in office-related applications is solid. The tablet's standout features, like its durable build, water resistant design, interchangeable batteries, and tailored accessories, underscore its utility in professional scenarios. If you need a rugged, dependable tablet for work rather than entertainment, the Munbyn IRT09J is an excellent choice, offering good value in its niche.

Munbyn IRT05 Pro Rugged Windows Tablet review

Munbyn IRT05 Pro: 30-second review

Designed for professionals who work in challenging environments, the Munbyn IRT05 Pro rugged tablet sets itself apart as a reliable and durable computing device. Featuring a 10.1-inch, 700-nit display, it offers a good balance of brightness and contrast for outdoor use. The robustness of this tablet is evident in its design, which is capable of withstanding drops, water, and dust, thanks to its MIL-STD-810G and IP65 certifications.

At its core, the IRT05 Pro is powered by the Intel Celeron(R) N5100 @ 1.10 1.11GHZ processor. We've tested out many of the best rugged tablets, and in our experience, this processor gives a good balance between processing performance and power consumption when running the preinstalled version of Windows 11 Pro. The large 10,000mAh battery is capable of providing up to 10 hours of usage and is quickly swapable if more running time is required between charges.

The tablet's connectivity options are well catered to, including dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, and 4G LTE, making connecting to online services in and out of the office simple. The addition of GPS functionality is a handy feature for location-based tasks.

Performance-wise, the Munbyn IRT05 Pro's configuration is aimed at typical office and administrative tasks, albeit out in the field. It handles Microsoft Office applications with ease and offers smooth internet browsing. However, it's not designed for gaming or creative tasks that require high-end graphics capabilities.

While it excels in robustness and functionality for professional use, its specifications are not aligned with the needs of gaming or creative work, making it an excellent option for field-based professionals rather than those working in creative industries or a tough recreational tablet.

The Munbyn IRT05 Pro Rugged Tablet is a robust device designed for demanding professional environments rather than simple home or office use. The tablet features a durable rubberized plastic exterior and is built to withstand on-site conditions, including knocks and scratches, and is, of course, waterproof.

Compared to the usual slimline design of most tablets, you can see where the focus has shifted onto robustness for the IRT05, with the tablet weighing in at 1.12kg and measuring 27.5 x 18.5 x 2.5cm, far more than most standard tablets.

As you look over the tablet, you'll also discover that doors cover all ports to ensure that the tablet remains watertight, reinforcing the point that this tablet is designed for use in all weather conditions and a multitude of locations.

Ensuring good visibility of the screen in all locations and situations, the tablet features a large 10.1-inch touchscreen with decent brightness that ensures it remains visible in all weather conditions, from bright sunny days to dull and overcast. The touch panel is capacitive with anti-scratch properties, further emphasizing its readiness for tough environments.

The tablet is equipped with a large battery, secured on the back and held in place by a push lock that enables the battery to be removed and replaced in seconds. On the back, there's also a fingerprint pad that users can use to enable fast and easy access to the system.

Additional design features include front and rear cameras (2.0MP front and 5.0MP rear), making it suitable for capturing work-related images and videos. The device also supports OTG, allowing connection to various peripherals such as USB drives, mice, and keyboards, which can be handy if you have larger reports to write.

Munbyn IRT05 Pro: Features

  • Intel Celeron(R) N5100 @ 1.10 1.11GHZ
  • Windows 11 PRO

Like the best rugged laptops and the best rugged smartphones, this tablet is designed for demanding professional settings, where toughness and functionality are paramount. The IRT05's standout feature is the 10.1-inch display, with a 700-nit brightness that ensures visibility in harsh sunlight and shade.

Running on Windows 11 Pro, this tablet offers a familiar operating system tailored for professional use, integrated with a 2.0 MP front camera and a 5.0MP rear camera for fieldwork documentation and video calls.

At its core, the IRT05 Pro is powered by an Intel Celeron(R) N5100 @ 1.10 1.11GHZ processor, supported by Intel HD Graphics and 8GB RAM, ensuring smooth operation of professional applications like Microsoft Office. This differs from the widely available Intel Cherrytrail Z8350 1.44Ghz-1.92GHz model which is widely available online.

Connectivity is essential for field use, and the IRT05 Pro is equipped with dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2, and 4G LTE, maintaining connection in diverse environments. Its GPS functionality is useful for location accuracy in remote areas.

A standout feature is the tablet's 10,000mAh battery, offering up to 10 hours of use and the ability to quickly swap in a fresh battery, enhancing its professional-grade feature set.

The tablet's durability, both aesthetically and functionally, meets MIL-STD-810G standards, providing resilience against drops, water, and dust – crucial for rugged environments. NFC and a range of ports and interfaces, including USB, HDMI, and RJ45, add to its adaptability, making the IRT05 Pro suitable for construction, warehousing, and field research.

  • Relatively slow
  • Low graphics scores

The Munbyn IRT05 Pro Rugged Tablet's performance is tailored to its target market. It offers solid performance and durability that will appeal to professional users looking for a tablet for administration rather than gaming or creative work.

The IRT05 achieves reasonable benchmark scores for the type of product that it is, indicative of its suitability for office and administrative functions. Its moderate graphics and processing speeds make it clear that it's not designed for the latest or even recently past gaming titles. Still, it excels in tasks like document handling, spreadsheets, and internet browsing, as reflected in its PC Mark score of 2344.

While this score is modest, it's sufficient for most professional fieldwork and warehouse operations.

Where the IRT05 Pro stands out is in its durability and practical features for field use. Its swappable battery system is particularly beneficial for uninterrupted work, and the hand grip mounts, quick scan button, and camera capabilities add significant value for industrial use.

The tablet's robust construction ensures resilience against harsh conditions, enhancing its reliability as a work tool in challenging environments where most other tablets and laptops would simply break.

The IP65 rating means that the tablet is water resistant rather than waterproof, so submerging the tablet into water will break it. However, subjected to heavy rain and damp conditions the tablet should be fine. In our test the water was spayed at the tablet for 10 minutes from a hose, while the wet meant that the screen wasn't usable due to the capacitive technology, after it was wiped clean the tablet worked fine.

The Munbyn IRT05 Pro Rugged Tablet proves its worth as a reliable and durable choice for professionals in challenging environments. Its standout 10.1-inch, 700-nit display, robust Intel Celeron processor, and substantial 10,000mAh battery make it well-suited for outdoor, warehouse, or fieldwork.

While it might not cater to gaming enthusiasts or those in creative industries due to limited graphics and storage, it excels in handling administrative and office tasks. The tablet's design, featuring waterproofing and drop resistance, aligns perfectly with its target market. If you're in need of a tough, functional tablet for professional use, the IRT05 Pro is a commendable choice and offers good value in its niche.

AGM H6 rugged smartphone: 30-second review

The AGM H6 Rugged Mobile Phone follows the usual tough design yet still manages to keep the overall look and feel of the smartphone slim and stylish. The rubberized plastic surround provides a decent grip, and the few buttons placed around the edge are a decent size and easy enough to find and use.

Adding to the durability of this phone is the IP68 rating, which means it can be submerged underwater, making it a great solution for anyone needing a phone that can keep up with life outdoors. It's also built to MIL-STD-810H standards, ensuring that if you drop it under most normal conditions, the phone won't be affected.

As you look over the phone, you'll also notice that rubber flaps cover all ports, and the back of the phone is textured to give a better overall grip to the device in any condition.

There are also a few more interesting features, such as the three-card slot that enables you to add two SIM cards and a TF Card up to 512GB, greatly expanding the already decent 256GB that comes as standard.

In speed tests, the phone didn't hold up so well against most other recent releases, with relatively low Geekbench and 3D Mark scores. However, when just running Google apps for business, that power is more than sufficient.

We've tested out quite a number of the best rugged smartphones and the best rugged tablets, and the AGM H6 Rugged Mobile Phone is for anyone wanting a simple, tough, no-fuss Android phone. It offers all the classic Google tools such as Mail, Docs, Sheets, and Calendar, without the bloat often found on other phones at a budget price.

  • Robust
  • Large Screen
  • Decent battery life

The design of the AGM H6 rugged mobile phone is a departure from traditional tough smartphones, featuring a slimline, lightweight form factor and a large floating-style screen akin to mainstream smartphones. However, once you pick it up, you can feel the solid build and slightly rubberized texture of the surround, along with detailing on the back that ensures a firm grip in all conditions.

The big selling points of this phone are toughness and simplicity, and everything about the design reinforces this. As you look over the phone, you'll see that all ports, including the USB Type-C and 3.5mm headphone jack, are covered with rubber bungs to ensure no water gets into the electronics if the phone gets wet or is dropped into water.

The power button on the right side of the phone gives a precise click as you switch the device on and also doubles as a fingerprint scanner. Above this is the volume control, again with a precise click. On the opposite side is a bright yellow button that can be customized in your settings to give quick access to an app of your choice. This button highlights the smartphone's key focus on simplicity of use.

As is standard on all smartphones, there are two cameras: an 8MP front camera for video calls and a 50MP rear camera.

The rest of the exterior is very simple, with the large 6.56-inch screen covering the front, the rubberized surround adding protection while keeping the phone slimline and stylish, and the build being IP68 rated, meaning it's waterproof and MIL-STD-810H certified, ensuring you can drop it without worry.

In line with the physical design elements of the phone, the software is equally streamlined. Unlike every other phone I've opened recently, the AGM H6 is sparse. On the home screen, there's only the basic Google suite of apps along with the settings icon. Scrolling to the second screen shows the camera, but really, AGM has kept the phone lightweight in terms of apps and demands on the phone's resources.

An interesting addition to the design is the three-card slot that allows you to insert two SIM cards and a TF Card up to 512GB in capacity, adding to the standard 256GB of internal storage. This means you can have both your work and personal number on the same phone, and the additional storage is there if you need to capture images, store work files, and more.

The design of the AGM H6 is aimed at those less fussed with the latest apps, games, and smartphone gimmicks and more focused on using a phone for making calls, checking and updating documents while knowing that, come rain or shine, the phone will continue working.

AGM H6 rugged smartphone: Features

  • Octa-Core Unisoc T606
  • Android 13

The AGM H6 is designed as a rugged phone and packs features to support its use in almost any condition, yet it still manages to blend that durability with a sleek design. The phone, considering its rugged label, is remarkably thin at just 10.75 mm and weighs in at 240g, not what you would usually expect from a rugged smartphone.

With IP68/IP69K water and dust resistance, plus MIL-STD-810H shock resistance, it's built to survive drops from up to 1.8 meters, so it will suit anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors for work or leisure.

At the heart of the AGM H6 is an Octa-Core T606 processor that enables the phone to run Android 13. The processor, backed by 16 GB of RAM (8 GB physical + 8 GB virtual), ensures there's plenty of memory for opening multiple apps at once. In comparison, the 256 GB storage, expandable up to 512 GB with an optional TF Card, provides ample space for apps, photos, and files.

Those three card slots are a standout feature of the AGM H6 – two for nano SIMs and one for a TF card, negating the need for constant swapping. The inclusion of NFC, fingerprint and face recognition, alongside GPS, Beidou, and Galileo, rounds off an impressive list of advanced features.

While not specifically aimed at photography, the camera sports a 50 MP primary camera alongside a 2 MP macro lens and an 8 MP front camera for video calls. The camera's 50MP sensor uses the Samsung JN1+GC02M1, which is a good middle-of-the-road imaging sensor.

Ensuring a decent battery life, the phone includes a 4900 mAh battery, supporting 18W fast charging. This capacity enables up to 24 hours of talk time, over 22 hours of music, and a decent amount of web browsing and video playback. However, these last two activities will drain the battery faster.

  • Good for google apps
  • Robust build quality

As this is a rugged smartphone, it only seems fair to start the test off with some rugged tests. Using the phone for making calls, alongside the pre-installed apps, WhatsApp, and a few other chosen selections, the H6 was fast and responsive, with the large touchscreen responding well in most conditions.

As the screen became wet, the usual issue arose with the responsiveness of the screen, as the moisture confuses the capacitive technology. However, a quick wipe away of the moisture returns the responsiveness.

Listening to music or watching videos through the phone handles all with ease, although the built-in speaker is a little lacking in audio quality. Plugging in some headphones or linking to a speaker, everything sounded fine.

For everyday use, there's little to fault with the H6. The only time it did struggle was when Adobe Lightroom and a few other video editing apps, such as Quik, were installed. While the apps themselves run absolutely fine, the smoothness of the experience isn't the same as you would get with more powerful phones. However, it could still do the work, which was impressive.

When it came to the benchmark tests, the results showed the limitations of the device, with middle to lower scores across the board. However, this phone isn't aimed at the higher end of the market; it's a simple, rugged phone designed to be used by people who need something simple and tough for tasks like making calls, reading emails, and updating documents. For this, the power is absolutely spot on. Below are the results of the benchmark tests.

Targus Dual Host USB-C KVM 4K: 30-second review

The best KVM switches are vital for anyone using more than one machine, particularly if you use both a desktop and a laptop on a daily basis. The basic premise is that, like a hub, you have all the necessary ports and connections for a quick setup as soon as you're back in the office. Moreover, these devices take it a step further by allowing you to switch from one machine to another.

The Targus Dual Host USB-C KVM 4K is an exemplary advanced KVM docking station, offering a plethora of connection options that support up to two machines and three displays. Its function and usability are straightforward, with plug-and-play functionality enabling quick setup.

Unlike some lightweight KVMs that are bus-powered, the Targus Dual Host USB-C KVM 4K utilizes an AC power supply. This design includes two 100W PD power USB Type-C ports, ample for charging two MacBook Pros and an ideal solution for any office.

What sets this KVM apart is its level of control. Plug in two computers and three monitors, and you can split the display across them – all three monitors for one machine or a combination thereof. This is ideal, then, when paired with any of the best monitors for a dual-set-up (and then some). This flexibility is enhanced further by allowing the use of a single keyboard and mouse across both machines, eliminating the need to switch inputs.

The Targus Dual Host USB-C KVM 4K is streamlined and intelligent, enhancing the functionality and utility of an office essential.

The Targus Dual Host USB-C KVM 4K  is on sale now. Although the price might seem expensive at a touch under $500, considering the Apple 96W charger is $79, and this essentially offers two units along with a KVM and multi-port hub, it's excellent value for money.

  • Dual 100W charging
  • Practical Long-Bar Style
  • Secure Locking Connections

The overall design of the Targus Dual Host USB-C KVM 4K is decidedly desktop, adopting the all-too-familiar long bar style common in switchers and hubs. This design is practical as it sits neatly on a monitor stand, allowing quick and easy access to the ports for both monitors and computers.

At the back of the unit is the main power socket, connecting to a standard AC power adapter and wall socket. There are also two USB Type-C ports for the machines, each offering a full 100W of power simultaneously, which is a notable feature.

Another feature of these ports is that the supplied USB cables have locking screw threads, similar to traditional cables, allowing them to be screwed into and locked into the back of the KVM. This design prevents accidental disconnections. The supplied cables are high-quality examples that support both power delivery and data transfer.

Next to the two USB Type-C ports are an HDMI and two DisplayPorts, supporting up to three 4K displays, followed by a Gigabit Ethernet port.

On the side is a T-Bar lock slot for security, with a power button on top that illuminates a purple LED when on. On the front right, there's a USB Type-C and two USB Type-A ports, then 3.5mm audio in and out, and two more Type-A ports. These two ports are labeled for the keyboard and mouse and should be used for this purpose as they enable auto-switching. Beside these is the switch that allows you to cycle through monitor configuration modes.

Functionality-wise, it's all there: a standard design but well laid out. Regarding build quality, two rubber pads on the base prevent slipping off the monitor stand, and the top has a textured finish for an ergonomic look of quality. The plastic itself feels and looks a bit cheap but is balanced by the metal-effect base.

  • Multi-Device Switching
  • Quick Setup Process
  • Simple, Intuitive Control

Even with the wire reduction that a decent KVM or hub enables, there's no getting around the fact that a little cable management is initially needed when setting up and placing the Targus Dual Host USB-C KVM 4K.

The slim block design, with two rubber pads on the base, holds the unit nicely on the base of the BenQ monitor. Due to space, I usually use a dual 27-inch monitor setup, but to test the full capability of the KVM, I've added a smaller Dell monitor into the mix. The two BenQ monitors are connected through DisplayPort, while the smaller monitor uses the HDMI socket.

With the monitors connected, there's little to report; all is easy, and with a bit of cable tidying, it all looks good. The next step is connecting the two computers, in this case, a MacBook Pro M1 16-inch and MacBook Air M2, both using the two USB Type-C ports on the back of the KVM. Instantly, the power symbol illuminates to show that everything is working and power is being delivered to the laptops.

Next, the keyboard and mouse are connected to the icon-labeled ports on the front of the KVM. With the three displays currently showing the output from the first laptop, the keyboard prompt has appeared, and I can click through the setup process in the usual way.

Then, a single press of the switch button on the front of the KVM switches to the screen of the second laptop. I can confirm the selection of the keyboard and mouse on the first screen while the second and third screens still display from the first monitor. Then, I can drag the mouse from the first monitor and machine to the second and then to the third.

The machine to which the mouse and keyboard are attached automatically switches with the movement of the mouse. The switch is quick but noticeable. However, the move from the second to the third monitor, both displaying from the same machine, is swift.

With another click of the KVM switch, the first two monitors show the display from the second machine, while the last shows the first machine. Click again, and all monitors show the second computer's display – it's all very quick and smooth. The only issue is that the button works on a carousel rotation, so you need to cycle through the modes to reach the desired one.

Likewise, if you want to use an Ethernet connection or have a NAS, this can be attached to the Ethernet port on the back. However, you can't connect a hard drive and switch from the machine it's mounted on to the other without the hard drive disconnecting. It would be handy if there were a way to either enable a single drive to stay connected to a single machine or, ideally, be networked across both machines.

Still, what this KVM enables does make things extremely simple and quick.

Targus Dual Host USB-C KVM 4K: Verdict

Priced at $499, this is a significant investment for any computer accessory, especially one that's neither a computer nor a hard drive. However, if you work with the best business monitors or the best business laptops, you'll appreciate the necessity of a KVM like this.

While there are features that could further enhance its usability, this KVM offers functionality that simplifies the process of using two machines. The auto-switching feature is one of the best workflow enhancements I have encountered.

It may be expensive, but for those using multiple machines, this device becomes indispensable. The speed of the switch is commendable, but it's the auto-switching and integration of machines and monitors that set the Targus Dual Host USB-C KVM 4K apart from other KVMs on the market. For this reason, in a professional environment, it justifies its price tag.

How did I test

KVM switches range from simple to feature-packed, and the Targus Dual Host USB-C KVM 4K falls in the middle. It has enough features to satisfy most users, though it may lack the high-end build quality that advanced users expect. Nonetheless, in the studio and office, this KVM delivered what was required and more. During the test, these were a few of the aspects I focused on:

I work between a college and university centre and a photography studio, often switching between Mac and PC systems. While I mostly stick to one machine, there are times when I need to use both Mac and PC systems.

In this test, I first used the KVM with two MacBooks: a smaller MacBook Air M2 and a larger 16-inch M1. The larger machine is primarily used at home for more demanding tasks, while the impressively powerful Air is suitable for Photoshop work, writing, and general admin.

The other environment was in the studio, where some equipment requires a PC for software compatibility. This environment is usually a hassle, so integrating a KVM into the workflow was a good test of the Targus Dual Host USB-C KVM 4K's capabilities. The testing environments included:

Tecno MegaBook S1 : 30-second review

The sleek design of this laptop immediately catches the eye with its expansive 15.6" 3.2K resolution monitor, boasting a 120Hz refresh rate and a full 100% sRGB colour gamut.

The overall feel exudes quality, although the silver finish is high-grade plastic, not the metal found in more premium models. Nevertheless, the build quality feels far from cheap, save for the slightly loose left trackpad click, which slightly detracts from the overall solid construction.

For the on-the-go professional, the connectivity options are impressive. There is a range of USB Type-C ports, including one USB 4.0, along with a full-sized HDMI 2.0 port, a MicroSD card reader, and a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. Ideal, then, if you've been on the hunt for the best business laptops with this sort of port selection.

Our test model came with Windows 11 pre-installed, and the hardware specifications suggest this laptop will be serviceable for several years before an upgrade becomes necessary.

Internally, it houses a 12th generation Intel Core i7-1260P processor with 12 cores and 16 threads, peaking at 4.7GHz with Turbo Boost. The integrated Intel Iris Xe Graphics, with 96 compute units and a top frequency of 1400 MHz, utilizes 6.29 GB of device memory, facilitating smooth media playback and capable handling of graphically demanding tasks.

Weighing in at 1.35kg and measuring 243mm x 350mm x 13.5mm, the laptop's dimensions and weight make it an ideal solution for day-to-day tasks on the go. While it offers ample processing power for multimedia tasks and gaming, the system falls just short of running the best 3D modeling software or the best video editing software. While editing video was fine, we struggled to achieve seamless 4K video editing in applications like DaVinci Resolve. For all other intents and purposes, this laptop hits the mark as a potent solution.

Currently, the Tecno MegaBook S1 with a 256GB SSD we're reviewing isn't broadly available. With the 512GB SSD model retailing at approximately $1599 and the 1TB version at $1699, we expect this variant to be priced around $1499.

  • Lightweight
  • Slightly cheap feeling trackpad

Upon first glance at the Tecno MegaBook S1, you'll notice a resemblance in colour, design, and finish to any of the best MacBook Pro laptops. However, the similarity is brief; unlike the MacBook Pro, this 15.6" laptop can be easily lifted with one hand.

The overall finish and quality feel of the laptop are excellent, courtesy of the high-grade Magnesium Alloy body. It may give a plastic impression compared to metal, but this contributes to its lightweight nature. Despite this and its slim design, it feels robust and well-constructed.

Its slim profile and light build underscore its design for mobility. With a 12th gen Intel i7, 16GB RAM, and an SSD (albeit only 256GB), it boasts impressive power.

Opening the laptop reveals a large 15.6" 3.2K Super Vision Mega Screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio and a 120Hz refresh rate. The display is bright at 450 nits, fully adjustable, offers DC Dimming, and comes with built-in eye protection.

Connectivity can be a challenge with lightweight laptops, and at 13.5mm thick, there's no room for a full-sized Ethernet port. However, it compensates with a generous array of USB Type-C and A ports, a full-sized HDMI, and a MicroSD card slot.

For conference calls and presentations on the go, the laptop is well-equipped with a 1080P FHD (2MP) AI camera, a beauty AI algorithm, and privacy options. The 6-speaker system, DTS X: Ultra, and Dual-Mics with AI ENC ensure clear audio.

An added security benefit is the Biometrics: 2-in-1 fingerprint power button, a feature that's fast becoming standard and should be considered essential for laptops.

The battery life is noteworthy at an estimated 10 hours, and Tecno includes an ultra-fast 65W GaN Super Fast Charger, which can fully recharge the 70Wh battery at 65W in just over an hour.

This laptop is designed as a step up from the mainstream in terms of power and function. It's not quite a high-end desktop replacement, but it's close. Therefore, when put under load, such as editing 4K video, efficient cooling is vital.

Tecno's Ice Storm Cooling system, with VC heat dissipation and a dual fan design, is engineered to activate under load, preventing throttling with processor-intensive applications.

Overall, the specifications, build, and quality of this laptop make it a standout choice. While it may take some getting used to the power in such a light package, its size and weight make it an excellent option for those needing a capable, lightweight laptop.

The Chiclet keyboard design offers sufficient key travel for fast typing and is spill-resistant. While there could have been room for a numeric pad, and the function keys are frustratingly small, the keys' positive action compensates for these minor drawbacks.

The Tecno MegaBook S1 boasts a magnesium alloy metal body, which contributes to its lightweight profile of 1.35kg and slim 13.5mm thickness. Its unique five-layer nano-material spraying process provides a textured surface for a tactile finish and is available in Galaxy Silver or Space Grey.

The laptop features a hinge mechanism that facilitates one-handed opening—a convenient touch. Its standout 15.6-inch display delivers a 3.2K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate, along with a 100% sRGB colour gamut. Additionally, the 16:10 widescreen aspect ratio and TÜV Eye Comfort Certification highlight its commitment to visual clarity and user comfort.

Equipped with a 12th generation Intel Core i7-1260P processor featuring 12 cores and 16 threads, the MEGABOOK S1 also offers a Turbo Boost for enhanced performance, well-suited for intensive applications. During such tasks, the Ice Storm Cooling system with its dual fans becomes particularly effective.

Our review model includes 16GB LPDDR5 system memory and a 256GB SSD. However, options for a 512GB or 1TB high-capacity PCIe 4.0 SSD are available.

The cooling is adeptly handled by the Ice Storm Cooling System, incorporating a Super-Large VC and dual fans, claiming a 60% increase in heat dissipation efficiency over standard systems. Alongside is a 70Wh battery and a 65W GaN super-fast charger, suggesting a well-considered balance between performance and battery longevity.

For audio, TECNO's VOC Plus technology uses a 6-speaker sound matrix and dual AI ENC microphones, focusing on superior sound quality for both playback and communication. The Smart AI Camera supports beautification, virtual backgrounds, and motion tracking.

The MEGABOOK S1's connectivity suite is robust, featuring a USB 4.0 port, a full-function Type-C port, HDMI 2.0, two USB 3.1 ports, and Wi-Fi 6, indicating a readiness for diverse connectivity demands. Additionally, it offers biometric security with a 2-in-1 fingerprint button integrated into the power switch.

With Windows 11 pre-installed, the TECNO MEGABOOK S1 is up-to-date with the latest from Microsoft. Its comprehensive port selection, including USB 4.0, Type-C, HDMI 2.0, USB 3.1, a microSD card reader, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, ensures the device is well-equipped for various user needs. The laptop also features a Smart AI Camera with capabilities for beautification, virtual backgrounds, and motion tracking.

Connectivity options include the latest USB 4.0 port, a full-function Type-C port, HDMI 2.0 port, two USB 3.1 ports, and a Wi-Fi 6 module, indicating comprehensive connectivity solutions. It also includes a range of biometric features such as a 2-in-1 fingerprint button integrated into the power button.

The TECNO MEGABOOK S1 comes with Windows 11 pre-installed, providing the latest Microsoft operating system from the outset. The inclusion of a 65W GaN charger and a variety of ports, such as USB 4.0, Type-C, HDMI 2.0, USB 3.1, a microSD card reader, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, completes the package, indicating a device ready for a variety of user scenarios.

Tecno MegaBook S1: Performance

Tecno MegaBook S1 Review

  • Slow
  • Poor NVMe score

The Tecno MegaBook S1 is tailored for those seeking portable computing power. Extensive testing through benchmarking software, various applications, and some gaming, reveals the capabilities of this slim, lightweight laptop.

The design, style, size, and weight present an intriguing proposition, placing it within the premium laptop bracket. Its lightweight build, paired with a large high-resolution monitor and excellent audio, makes it a versatile option for office work, entertainment, and gaming. But it also has enough power for creative pursuits if you've been looking for the best laptop for photo editing, best laptop for graphic design, or even the best video editing laptop at this price-point.

The laptop impresses with its power and speed, and while it may not top the power specification charts, it handles tasks better than expected, thanks in part to the lightning-fast SSD. However, a capacity of more than 256GB would likely enhance performance further.

There are drawbacks, notably the fans, which become audibly intrusive under heavy processor loads. The trackpad's touch gestures and features are practical, yet the left and right clicks feel subpar—sticky and cheap, detracting from the otherwise premium feel.

Performance-wise, the laptop excels where it counts: editing high-resolution 45MP RAW images in Lightroom and Photoshop was seamless, as was standard 4K video editing in DaVinci Resolve. Editing RAW 4K video proved challenging, with the 256GB SSD capacity quickly becoming a constraint. Yet, for on-the-go video editing, this laptop, combined with a portable SSD connected to the USB 4.0 port, should suffice.

As a gaming laptop, it holds its own. While it can't replicate desktop-level smoothness, games like Red Dead Redemption 2 are playable at 1080p with minimal lag, providing a satisfying experience.

Tecno MegaBook S1: Verdict

When discussing high-end premium laptops, we typically anticipate some weight and bulk. However, the Tecno MegaBook S1 breaks the mold with its slimline and lightweight design, which can initially feel disconcerting. The magnesium alloy shell, for instance, might be mistaken for high-quality plastic mimicking metal, but it's genuinely metal, albeit surprisingly light. The trackpad further accentuates this perception, as it has a somewhat cheap-feeling click that lacks the precision and authority expected from a premium laptop.

Despite these factors, the laptop performs admirably in key areas. It excels outside the office and can handle many processor-intensive tasks—just be prepared for the noticeable fan noise. Another crucial point for creative professionals is the SSD size; opting for more than the base 256GB is advisable, as it's insufficient and can significantly limit your capabilities.

Overall, the Tecno MegaBook S1 offers solid performance, but certain build quality issues prevent it from being classified as a truly exceptional machine.

iTop Private Browser

Author: admin | Category: Computers Gadgets Pro Software & Services | Comments: Off

Since its establishment, iTop has had an impact on the software utility market. This Hong Kong-based company offers a range of applications that strike the balance between performance, flexibility, and security.

Among their offerings for Windows computers is the iTop Private Browser. This web browser stands out for its cleanliness, security, and speed. It also includes a built-in VPN that allows users to hide their IP addresses and bypass geo-restrictions. By optimizing its network schemes, iTop Private Browser has greatly improved its speed, ensuring users can enjoy distraction-free browsing sessions. Additionally, it features an Auto Trace Shredder function that automatically deletes cookies, caches, and browsing history when users close a tab to prevent data leaks.

If you're looking for a browser that prioritizes privacy while being lightweight and compatible with your system, look no further than the iTop Private Browser – it might just be the alternative browser for you if you like trying out new browsers.

Features

iTop Private Browser focuses on user-friendliness by basing its architecture on Chromium, at the same time relying on its patented speed to show off its functionalities. According to the company, the browser uses military-grade encryption and comes with built-in features, such as an ad and pop-up blocker, as well as a VPN client. However, to fully utilize the functions of the VPN, you will need a monthly subscription if you want unlimited access.

Despite all of these functions, the browser tends to show ads when you perform Google search, which seems to be sourced by the browser itself. Either that or the ad blocker does not work as intended. If you’re hoping to use extensions for ad blocking, you may look for a different browser right now since you won’t be able to utilize them in iTop’s solution.

iTop Private Browser

iTop Private Browser pricing for VIP (Image credit: iTop)

By default, all of the protection offered, such as the ad blocker, anti-tracking, and anti-phishing, is turned on, except the VPN. For the VPN, you will have to turn it on yourself, which makes a lot of sense, as not all of us want to be behind a VPN at all times. You can turn on the VPN with just a few clicks by clicking on the VPN icon in the upper right corner. From there, you can let the VPN automatically choose the best location for you, or you can choose it from a list. Note that some locations are behind the VIP pricing plan, while others are free. There are roughly 87 locations to choose from, dispersed across the world. One thing that sticks out is the erroneous dimensioning of the flag icons, which just look like the VPN part of the browser has been rushed in production.

Privacy

The browser focuses on privacy and brings in a lot of options. Through the VPN, it offers military-grade encryption, as claimed by iTop itself, while also offering various server locations to help you stay protected online and break geo-restrictions. Furthermore, the anti-tracking feature prevents sites from tracking your online activities and, coupled with the ad-blocker, pop-ups, and malicious links are avoided. Another neat function is the Surfing Protection, which serves as a safeguard against visiting harmful websites, shielding you from privacy breaches, online dangers, and unauthorized cryptocurrency mining.

Ease of use

iTop VPN Browser focuses primarily on ensuring user privacy while browsing. It offers a minimalistic set of tools that are designed to prioritize privacy. However, after conducting tests, we found that these features do not impede navigation in any way. In our view, the available features, along with the easy-to-use options, create a user-friendly and uncluttered browsing experience. This makes it suitable for both beginners and those who prefer a simple approach.

iTop Private Browser

Competitors

Vivaldi - Vivaldi's design and approach may not appeal to everyone. The abundance of options on its main search page can be overwhelming. However, Vivaldi stands out among other browsers by offering a commendable environment for work and efficiency. It provides a separate set of task management tools that aid in tab organization and maintaining a clutter-free workspace, focusing on security through Chrome extensions, as it's based on Chromium.

Firefox - Firefox remains highly customizable, allowing you to personalize its look and expand its functionality through a wide variety of extensions and plugins. The recent update significantly enhanced its performance, making it faster and more efficient. It offers a diverse set of features, excels in terms of privacy, and is user-friendly. Additionally, it boasts lightning-fast speed.

Final verdict

If maintaining a high level of security during your browsing sessions is a priority, the iTop Private Browser could be a choice for you. This browser not only offers a secure browsing experience, but it also includes a built-in VPN client and various helpful features like encryption, anti-tracking, and an adblocker. While the settings may be more basic compared to other browsers, they still provide all the essential functionalities that most users require. Furthermore, if you already use a secure browser, there is little here to persuade you to change it for iTop’s solution. Moreover, from the visual and overall functional side, iTop has little to offer when it comes to competing with established browsers like Firefox, Chrome, Edge, Opera, and others.
