Alienware m18: Two-minute review

Alienware m18, Dell’s refresh of its largest Alienware laptop line and some of the best Dell laptops, has gone in a different direction from the previous Alienware X14 (2022) and Alienware x15 R2. This latest model is unabashedly a desktop replacement in every sense of the word, from the thick and bulky chassis to its heavy weight to the same black color. However, it separates itself from the pack with its incredible performance and, if you select the upgrade, its fully mechanical CherryMX RGB keyboard.

The keyboard is, by far, the best I have ever tested, rivaling some of the best gaming keyboards I’ve used. It strikes the perfect balance between the switches being thin enough to allow the laptop to close (it does cheat a little by using some of the thickness to create a slight divet for the keyboard to rest in). The keys themselves have 1.8mm of key travel as well as that perfect satisfying feedback despite the thinner size. Nothing is sacrificed in its quality; I could and have typed for hours without it ever losing its luster. The touchpad is large and responsive, everything you could ask for if you’re a fan of them.

Its 18-inch display is absolutely phenomenal, with either a QHD+ 165Hz panel like my own review model or a beyond incredible FHD+ 480Hz panel for the truly passionate professional gamer. The webcam is a standard one, not particularly amazing but works well enough if you need to jump in a conference call or livestream. The audio quality is quite good as well, as the speakers are able to handle music and general sound design with ease. When gaming or streaming movies on this, you should only really need headsets for privacy reasons.

One major improvement from the previous Alienware x15 R2 laptop is the ventilation, which is by and far much better. That’s thanks to the quad-fan design that circulates and expels from several vents across seven heat pipes, along with improved thermal paste quality for both the CPU and GPU. As a drawback, it almost sounds like a jet engine whenever the fans even slightly rev up, but most video streaming services and software have noise reduction properties so that’s not an issue there.

Performance is where the Alienware m18 shines, as it makes its mark as one of the best gaming laptops by completely beating out every other desktop replacement gaming PC we’ve tested in terms of GPU benchmark testing, including the much more expensive MSI GT77 Titan. However, CPU testing is a little less consistent, with some laptops like the Lenovo Legion 7i Pro or the Titan beating out the m18 in certain scores while falling behind in others.

Of course, if you want the full gaming experience and aren't in need of portability, then you might want to invest in the best gaming PC instead since the performance can't be matched due to superior specs. And if a cheaper price is more your game, then the best budget gaming laptops will definitely be more of your speed.

Alienware m18: Price & availability

  • Starting at $1,999.99 / £2,068.99 / around AU$2,999
  • Available now
  • Available in the US and UK, and Australia

For a desktop replacement, the Alienware m18 pricing starts at a rather affordable rate of $1,999.99 / £2,068.99 / around AU$2,999 – still expensive but definitely leagues cheaper than the current competition. But if you’re getting a hardcore gaming machine 512GB of storage isn’t what you’re looking for. Even my own review unit, priced at $3,549 / £3,299.99 / around AU$5,316, is far cheaper than the Lenovo Legion 7i Pro and around the same price as the Asus ROG Zephyrus M16 (2023) and has similar specs to both.

As with most other Dell products, this laptop is available in a wide variety of regions, including the US, UK, and Australia. The UK is mostly the same as the US in terms of specs and pricing, with the exception of the 480Hz display panel that’s only available for lower specs, which is an odd choice to say the least. Meanwhile, Australia has only one high-spec model equipped with the RTX 4080 and packing 64GB of RAM, but there’s no 480Hz option either.

Alienware m18: Specs

The specs for the Alienware m18 review unit sent to me are as follows: an Intel Core i9-13980HX CPU, Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 GPU, 32GB DDR5 RAM, 1TB SSD of storage, and 18-inch (2560 x 1600), 16:10 QHD+, 165Hz display.

The Alienware m18 comes in several customizable configurations, depending on which options you choose. These specs include the choice of display, CPU, GPU, memory, storage space, and even the choice of membrane or mechanical keys.

Alienware m18: Design

  • Extremely heavy and bulky
  • Excellent keyboard
  • Port selection is fantastic

Like older models, the Alienware m18 uses the same distinctive chassis design that accommodates mostly rear-situated ports and  includes customizable RGB lighting on both that and the Alienware logo on the top cover. Despite this, the extremely heavy and bulky form factor, combined with the rather boring all-black color palette, almost completely cancels out the effect, making it look noticeably less visually appealing. Considering that this laptop is built more for performance and ventilation, the decision to cut back on aesthetics is understandable.

But it cannot be understated how heavy and big this laptop is. It weighs nearly nine pounds, and you can feel every single pound of it. It couldn’t even fully fit in my Lo & Sons O.G. 2 overnight bag, which has fit both 17 and 18-inch laptops just fine. With this big boy, I had to leave my bag open as I traveled home. If you purchase it, make sure to keep it home or only pack it in your travel luggage.

The 18-inch display is phenomenal, and in the US and UK, you can choose between either a QHD+ 165Hz panel like my own review model or a ridiculous FHD+ 480Hz panel for the truly serious. I wish the webcam was just as amazing, but it’s a pretty standard 1080p HD camera found in most gaming laptops, that works fine in good lighting but suffers if you have a dimmer setup. If you livestream seriously, you’ll want to upgrade; otherwise, it’s fine for a conference call.

What I enjoy the most about its design is the keyboard, which can be updated to Alienware CherryMX ultra-low profile mechanical keys with N-key rollover tech. This is by and far the best keyboard I’ve ever used, combining that satisfying click and feedback of mechanical switches with the slimmer keys expected of any laptop. Its touchpad is quite nice; smooth, large, and responsive, perfect for those like me who use them frequently. The speakers are quite excellent as well, delivering a nice robust sound with solid bass that conveys both music and sound effects in your games well.

Its port selection is absolutely fantastic, featuring every type of port you could possibly want including four USB 3.2 Type-A ports, two Thunderbolt 4 Gen 2 Type-C ports with DisplayPort Alt Mode/USB4, one Ethernet port, one audio port, one HDMI 2.1 port, one power-adapter port, one mini-Display port, and one SD card slot.

Alienware m18: Performance

  •  Gaming performance is top-notch
  •  Clears benchmarks
  •  CPU struggles a bit
Alienware m18: Benchmarks

Here's how the Alienware m18 performed in our suite of benchmark tests:

3DMark: Night Raid: 71,818; Fire Strike: 35,465; Time Spy: 21,040; Port Royal: 14,171
Cinebench R23 Multi-core: 28,341 points
GeekBench 5: 2,027 (single-core); 21,488 (multi-core)
PCMark 10 (Home Test): 7,681 points
25GB File Copy: 17.5
Handbrake 1.6: 2:35
CrossMark: Overall: 2179; Productivity: 2007; Creativity: 2508; Responsiveness: 1831
Battery Life (TechRadar movie test): 3 hours, 25 minutes
Total War: Warhammer III (1080p, Ultra): 155 fps; (1080p, Low): 372 fps
Cyberpunk 2077 (1080p, Ultra): 102 fps; (1080p, Low): 139 fps
Dirt 5 (1080p, Ultra): 157 fps; (1080p, Low): 200 fps

Ventilation has improved by leaps and bounds with the Alienware m18, fixing every issue from the previous Alienware x15 R2 and making the much thicker design completely understandable. It features a quad-fan design that circulates and expels from several vents across seven heat pipes, along with improved thermal paste quality for both the CPU and GPU. The trade-off is a laptop that sounds almost like a jet engine, but if you’re passionate about performance and especially overclocking, then it’s more than worth it.

Speaking of performance, the Alienware m18 is currently king on the GPU front. It beats out the other desktop replacements that we’ve tested so far, including the MSI GT77 Titan, which is way more expensive for similar specs. And it’s not only benchmarking that it reigns over, as those scores translate to higher frame rates as well. There’s not a single game, whether Cyberpunk 2077 or Dirt 5, in which this laptop scored under 100fps on average, even on maxed-out settings. And yes, even when ray tracing is enabled.

Keep in mind that these are results taken straight from a setup right out of the box, with the only change being that I set it to the generic Performance mode in Windows 11. The updated and redesigned Alienware Command Center software is even easier to use now thanks to a complete UI overhaul, making overclocking a breeze and performance results skyrocket. Since I had the old version equipped before I updated, I could see the difference, and it's leagues better than below.

When it comes to CPU results, it’s not as consistent with some scores being higher than the competition and others much lower, the latter of which happened most often against the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i. In general, it follows the same current-gen trend of the CPU performance potential being throttled by the GPU, as well as occasionally slowdown and webpage or video loading issues. Despite that, I was able to use it as a productivity machine for a full day of work without much issue.

  • Performance score: 5 / 5

Alienware m18: Battery

closeup of battery information

  •  Awful battery
  •  Charges fast

Unsurprisingly, the battery life on the Alienware m18 is pretty atrocious. Our HD movie battery test found that it barely lasts three and a half hours, and when used for productivity work, it reaches about four hours before dying.

As with any other desktop replacement, this is not meant to be taken off the charger unless you need to carry it somewhere. That said, it does at least charge quickly, so you won’t be stuck at an AC adaptor for very long.

  • Battery score: 2 / 5

Should you buy the Alienware m18?

Buy it if...

You want a gaming performance monster
It chews up and spits out any PC game on the highest possible settings, even with both ray-tracing and DLSS 3 enabled.

Don't buy it if...

You’re on a budget
Though this is a premium-quality gaming laptop, that level of performance comes at a steep price. This is definitely above the budget of the average gamer.

Alienware m18: Also consider

If the Alienware m18 has you considering other options, here are two more laptops to consider...

How I tested the Alienware m18

  • I tested the Alienware m18 for several weeks
  • I tested it using both benchmark tests and video game benchmarks
  • I stress-tested the battery using the TechRadar movie test

First, I tested the general weight and portability of the Alienware m18 by carrying it around in a laptop bag for a day. After I set it up, I ran several CPU and GPU benchmarks to thoroughly test out the graphics card's performance and how much it affected processing performance. Finally, I used a variety of programs and applications to test out both battery life and general performance during work-like conditions, as well as gaming benchmarks to test the RTX 4090 GPU.

The Alienware m18 is a desktop replacement for gaming, meaning it's meant to be used for hardcore gaming sessions. I made sure to thoroughly test out this laptop in that regard, to make sure it reached certain levels of performance.

I've tested plenty of gaming PCs and laptops, making me more than qualified to understand benchmark test results and how to properly stress test machines to see how well they perform as a work machine.

Plans and pricing

Similar to Okta, Ping Identity has made it very complicated to choose the right pricing plan for your business if you are a small business owner. We start off with the firm’s Workforce plans, where we have three plans, the Essential, which costs $3 per user per month, Plus at $6 per user per month, and the Premium plan, for which you will have to go through the sales department to get a custom offer. The main differences between the plans relate to the functionalities the users have at their disposal, with SSO coming in as standard even with the lowest plan offering.

Next, Ping Identity offers their Customer pricing plans, which also have three levels. The Essential plan costs $20,000 annually, the Plus $40,000 annually and for the Premium you will have to contact sales.

Both Workforce and Customer plans have the option of 30-day trial, which could help you choose the right plan for you and your company.

Features

PingOne offers powerful Multi-Factor Authentication capabilities, which include passwordless authentication, eliminating the risk of attack and removing the frustration of memorizing multiple passwords. Adaptive to the situation, it can utilize frictionless, behavioral, and contextual factors such as IP address, geolocation, and timestamps to determine any potential risks. Plus, their Single Sign-On feature allows users to access multiple applications with one single set of credentials, saving admins time by lessening password reset requests and discouraging the use of weak or recycled passwords.

Risk management also plays a key role, as it integrates with authentication flows and policies to track and notify any events during user sessions. It rates, and groups risk signals, displaying any risk associated with the user's device and delivering a risk score. Thus, administrators are better equipped to make the best decision for granting access with the help of Ping's intelligent authentication providing risk signals and evaluates user behavior according to context.

Interface and in use

For the user, PingOne couldn't be simpler. With one click of the URL provided, usually in the form of an icon on their desktop, they'll be in the PingOne cloud. For the first-time user, the connection procedure is quick and easy, and afterward, their desktop is populated with the apps to which their organization has given them access to. System administrators can also set up groups and link with Active Directory and a range of other settings to cater to their organization's needs.

Ping Identity

Ping Identity dashboard (Image credit: Ping Identity)

Accessing cloud-based applications is a simple process: the user clicks on the icon of the desired application on their desktop and is taken directly to PingOne, where they are securely authenticated. For extra security, strong authentication can be used. After this, a token exchange happens to confirm the user's identity, and they'll be connected to the application. It's all seamless and invisible to the user.

Support

The support the company offers is comprehensive, starting off with business phone numbers that will link you directly to customer support. If you are not a “phone person,” you can create a case for the firm’s support team to follow up on. A step up from some of the competitors is an offer for various certificates when it comes to using PingOne that users can pursue.

A detailed documentation section is available, but the documents tend to be heavy on technical jargon, which makes them harder to use for non-tech people. But fear not; there is a community forum with a few moderators where you can get answers to your questions. And finally, there is a Q&A section on the site, rounding out the comprehensive support users get.

Security

At Ping, Information Security Management System (ISMS) is based on top industry standards, including ISO 27001 and NIST 800-53. The commitment to security is evidenced through the ISO 27001 certification, which the company has held since 2018. Every year since 2013, Ping Identity has been getting Identity as a Service (IDaaS) evaluation via SSAE 16 SOC2 Type II certification. There are also third-party assessors who audit products and control the environment to make sure security measures are working as intended.

The competition

Okta is a formidable rival, offering an abundance of features often hidden within its various pricing plans. Requiring more technical expertise, Okta provides an analogous service and in some areas, even superior choices when compared to PingOne.

In contrast to both PingOne and Okta, Twingate offers much less yet stands out with its granular security configuration and lower prices.

Final verdict

PingOne Cloud Platform is an advanced, cloud-based product with exceptional security and management protocols delivered on a single, highly-scalable platform. Seamlessly integrated with other software, it fits into existing workflows with ease.

No passwords are necessary thanks to its frictionless sign-on capabilities, meaning added risk-mitigation. For enterprises with broad customer usage, like retail, and businesses needing the highest level of identity security for compliance or confidentiality - like government, financial services, and healthcare - PingOne Cloud Platform is the ideal solution.

SSLs.com review
8:47 pm |

Author: admin | Category: Computers Gadgets | Tags: | Comments: Off

SSLs.com is a website that provides SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificates and other website security products. SSL certificates are used to secure website traffic by encrypting data transmitted between a website and its visitors.

This encryption helps to protect sensitive information, such as login credentials and credit card numbers, from being intercepted by third parties. SSLs.com offers a variety of SSL certificates from trusted certificate authorities, including domain validation, organization validation, and extended validation certificates.

It also provides other security products, such as website security scanning, code signing certificates, and multi-domain SSL certificates.

SSLs.com features

The first feature that caught my attention was the strong SHA-2 & 2048-bit encryption. This type of encryption is the strongest currently available and ensures that any information transmitted between my website and its visitors is protected.

This is particularly important for websites that deal with sensitive information such as credit card details or personal data. Another feature that stood out to me was the basic HTTPS option. This feature is ideal for websites that don't handle sensitive information but still want to provide their visitors with a secure browsing experience. Having HTTPS on my website gives my visitors peace of mind and ensures that any data exchanged is encrypted.

SSLs.com's features don't stop there. Another benefit of using an SSL certificate is the boost in search engine rankings. SSLs.com provides this benefit with their Basic HTTPS feature. Google has announced that HTTPS is now a ranking factor in its algorithm, so having an SSL certificate can improve your website's visibility in search engine result pages.

Moving on to the validation options, SSLs.com offers three different levels of validation to suit different website needs. Domain validation is the most basic level of validation, and it ensures that the SSL certificate is issued to the owner of the domain. This type of validation is ideal for personal blogs or websites that don't require visitors to provide any personal information.

The organization validation option provides a higher level of validation by verifying the company's identity and its ownership of the domain. This level of validation is suitable for businesses that require their customers to submit personal information, such as ecommerce websites.

The extended validation option provides the highest level of validation available. This type of validation requires an extensive verification of the business's identity, including verifying its legal existence and physical location. This level of validation is ideal for larger companies or financial institutions that deal with highly sensitive information.

SSLs.com also offers three SSL certificate features; single domain SSL, multi-domain SSL, and wildcard SSL. A single domain SSL is ideal for websites that only have one domain, whereas a multi-domain SSL is suitable for websites that have multiple domains. The wildcard SSL option is best for websites that have multiple subdomains and require a single SSL certificate to secure them all.

Last but not the least, SSLs.com offers SSL Comodo and Sectigo certificates, both of these SSL certificates are well-known in the industry for their high level of security and reliability.

SSLs.com sign up

SSLs.com is easy to use and the sign up process is straightforward (Image credit: SSLs.com)

Integration and performance

Integration of SSLs.com is a relatively straightforward process. To get started, you need to create an account on SSLs.com and purchase an SSL certificate that suits your needs. SSLs.com offers a range of SSL certificates, including Domain Validation, Organization Validation, Extended Validation, Wildcard SSL, Multi-Domain SSL, and Code Signing SSL. Once the SSL certificate is purchased, you need to generate a Certificate Signing Request (CSR) from your web server. The CSR contains information about your domain and public key, which is required to generate the SSL certificate. You can generate the CSR yourself or use the CSR generator provided by SSLs.com.

After the CSR is generated, you need to submit it to SSLs.com for verification. SSLs.com will verify your domain ownership and issue the SSL certificate. Once the SSL certificate is issued, you need to install it on your web server. SSLs.com provides installation guides for popular web servers such as Apache, Nginx, IIS, cPanel, and Plesk. You can also use the SSL installation service provided by SSLs.com.

The performance of SSLs.com is impressive. SSLs.com has a user-friendly website that is easy to navigate. The website is optimized for speed and is responsive on all devices. The SSLs.com website has a load time of less than one second, which is faster than most websites.

SSLs.com also offers fast issuance times for SSL certificates. SSLs.com has an automated verification system that can verify domain ownership in just a few minutes. This means that SSL certificates can be issued quickly, which is important for website owners who need to secure their websites quickly.

SSLs.com also offers a 99.9% browser compatibility guarantee. This means that SSL certificates issued by SSLs.com will work on all major browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer. This is important because website owners need to ensure that their website is accessible to all users regardless of the browser they are using.

In terms of security, SSLs.com uses 2048-bit encryption for all SSL certificates. This is strong encryption which ensures that data transmitted between the website and the user is secure.

SSLs.com also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you are not satisfied with your SSL certificate, you can return it for a full refund within 30 days of purchase. This gives website owners peace of mind knowing that they can try SSLs.com without any risk.

SSLs.com security

SSLs.com’s SSL certificates are designed to provide comprehensive protection against various online threats, including phishing, hacking, and identity theft. To achieve this, SSLs.com incorporates numerous advanced security features, including the following:

First and foremost, SSLs.com provides industry-standard 2048-bit encryption, which is virtually unbreakable, making it nearly impossible for hackers to intercept or read the data transmitted between the server and the user's browser. Also, SSLs.com offers a wide range of SSL certificate types, including DV, OV, and EV certificates. These different types of certificates provide varying levels of authentication and verification, ensuring that the website visitors can be confident in the site's legitimacy and trustworthiness.

SSLs.com also provides a variety of other security features, such as strong authentication and verification protocols, which help to prevent unauthorized access to a website's sensitive data. For example, the company's SSL certificates incorporate Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocols, which use a combination of public and private key encryption to protect sensitive data during transmission. SSLs.com also uses advanced Domain Validation (DV) and Organization Validation (OV) procedures to verify the identity of website owners and operators, which helps to prevent malicious actors from obtaining SSL certificates fraudulently.

Furthermore, SSLs.com offers numerous tools to help website owners and operators manage their SSL certificates and ensure the ongoing security of their sites. For example, SSLs.com provides real-time SSL certificate monitoring and alerts, so website you can quickly detect any security breaches or issues and take action to mitigate them. Also, SSLs.com offers free reissues and unlimited server licensing, making it easy for you to manage and deploy your SSL certificates across multiple domains and servers.

SSLs.com customer support

Customer support

SSLs.com offers a variety of customer support tools to assist you with your SSL needs. While SSLs do not currently provide phone support, you can reach out for assistance via the ticket system, which allows for a convenient and streamlined way to track and respond to inquiries. Additionally, SSLs.com provides a physical address for you to contact at 4600 E Washington St #305, Phoenix, AZ 85034, USA.

For anyone seeking more immediate assistance, SSLs.com also offers a live chat support where you can speak with a representative in real time to address any questions or concerns you may have. This is particularly useful for anyone who needs quick answers or who prefers the convenience of online chat communication.

To further assist its users, SSLs.com provides a section of frequently asked questions (FAQs) on its website. These FAQs address common inquiries and provide helpful information regarding SSL certificates, installation, and troubleshooting.

Is SSLs.com right for your website?

SSLs.com offers competitive prices for SSL certificates, especially for multi-year purchases. It also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee and free reissues for the lifetime of the certificate.

Overall, if you are looking for an SSL certificate provider, SSLs.com is definitely worth considering. SSLs range of products, competitive pricing, and reliable customer support make them a strong contender in the market. However, it's worth noting that SSLs do not offer phone support which may be a drawback for someone who prefers phone calls. You may consider alternatives like SSL DigiCert CertCentral and Letsencrypt.

Sony WF-C700N review: the best cheaper noise-cancelling earbuds you can buy
4:46 pm |

Sony WF-C700N: Two-minute review

Sony's WF-C700N earbuds are a joy to wear. But how often have you loved the design and fit of a set of earbuds only to be let down when you actually get them doing their job – ie. playing your music?

That won't happen here. In fact, with the WF-C700N, Sony just ripped my notions on what is achievable at this level to smithereens. Some of the best noise-cancelling earbuds of the year, then? Indeed. Can they be bettered by rivals? Yes, but not for this money. You'll have to set your sights much farther up the food chain if you want to beat this suite of features and sound quality.

Honestly, I cannot believe Sony has priced them so low. Suffice to say, I like them a lot. You do need to look past Sony's odd naming game (the N addition to the moniker does indeed stand for Noise cancellation; these 'buds mark Sony's new entry level for ANC earbuds) but once that's done you'll find a truly likeable, solid set of earbuds that are nothing short of fantastic for the money.

Add to this the fact that their talents go above and beyond their Adaptive ANC and into Sony's 360 Reality Audio, guided by the excellent Sony Headphones Connect app, and you get an inkling of what I'm about to go to great lengths to celebrate.

Multi-point connectivity and adaptive sound control are here (you can select 'Walking', 'Waiting', 'Travelling' or 'Registered places' in the app, which is frankly incredible at this level) and you get Sony's standard DSEE audio 'upscaling' engine, so Spotify tracks are going to sound a lot better. Look, it's the kind of tech people like me are more au fait with when it comes to the excellent – but quite a bit more expensive – Sony WF-1000XM4 wireless earbuds and Sony WH-1000XM5 over-ears. And those are some of the best wireless headphones on the planet right now… whereas the WF-C700N are in what I like to call the budget-to-mid sector.

Did I mention that the build quality and battery life are bang-on too? There's less protrusion than with Sony's more affordable buds (Sony WF-C500, all eyes on you), because they're 37% lighter and 38% smaller than the top-tier WF-1000XM4

The long and short of it is this: the eagerly-awaited Sony WF-1000XM5 earbuds had better be good when they land in my lap (even if they are rumored to be a lot smaller), because as far as I'm concerned, the WF-C700N is where the smart money goes…

Sony WF-C700N review: Price & release date

  • Released on April 1, 2023
  • Priced $119 / £99 / AU$199

If the prices above made you double-take, well done you. Yes, Sony has challenged in this territory before, (see the sporty IP55-rated Sony WF-SP800N which feature a degree of noise-cancellation, or the budget friendly Sony WF-C500, if you can live without ANC) but never with quite this level of skill and accomplishment.

As with other options in Sony's more affordable oeuvre, these cheaper earbuds come in a few whimsical colorways: lavender and sage green (which is more like pistachio ice cream) as well as the more traditional black or white finishes.

At this level, the closest competition is likely the Panasonic RZ-S500W earbuds, or even the cheaper (but devoid of ANC or immersive audio) Cambridge Audio Melomania 1 Plus, but both options involve compromises, including a bulkier size and slightly bassier presentation in the Panasonic product (although perhaps you love that), and a more basic app in the Cambridge Audio option in addition to lacking noise cancellation.

Sony WF-C700N review: Features

  • Excellent immersive 360 Reality Audio
  • ANC profiles and optimization add value
  • No auto-off feature

For this level, I think it would be churlish to ask any more from your earbuds. Call-handling? A breeze – but not literally; Sony has worked hard on neutralizing wind-interference (there's a new mesh structure surrounding the microphone) and the fact that the units are much more flush with your ear does promote clearer calls.

But where these 'buds come alive for me, is when I get to playing Tidal tracks, because this opens the door to Sony 360 Reality Audio – aka 24 object-based channels arranged in a 360-degree soundstage, which Sony launched back in 2019. You'll have to take photos of your ear, which is a little tricky at first, then link your Tidal account. But it is emphatically worth it. I'll wax lyrical on the sound quality later, but as features at this level go, you're looking at game-changing immersive sound for this money.

As noted, Sony's excellent Headphones Connect app takes the wheel here. It's very good. Why? Adaptive Sound Control, optimized according to what you're doing, that's why – yes, these headphones learn how you use them and try to help. Don't like that it deploys ANC when it knows you're 'Staying'? That's fine, tap the cog in the app's Headphone Settings and you can deploy Ambient sound or turn all noise profiles off – and until you change it, that'll happen whenever you're sitting at your desk.

When Ambient is deployed, you can select from 1-20 on a slider (I keep mine at around 12 when 'Walking' to my train and 20 when 'Running') and these work very well indeed. When ANC is on, at my desk, all but the loudest noises are softened, leaving me immersed in my playlists. It's a feat and no mistake.

Perks abound. You can even deploy safe listening levels or collect badges pertaining to how often you've listened, and in which scenarios!

Any omissions worth mentioning? No auto-off when you remove them, but at this price, I'm prepared to follow Elsa's advice in Frozen and let it go.

Sony WF-C700N review: Sound quality

  • Tidal tracks come alive with surround-sound and verve
  • Even Spotify tracks are levelled up
  • A truly exuberant, agile and fun listen

Those who have read the entirety of this review won't be shocked to learn that this particular section, like those before it, is extremely positive. But if you've skipped straight to here (naughty!), well, it's good news.

Those with a Tidal account are in for a real treat, but even when I stream lossy Spotify tracks or much better Apple Music streams, the WF-C700N put on a resoundingly agile, meaty, enthusiastic performance.

When streaming The Bangles' Eternal Flame, backing vocals arrive in each ear but never to the detriment of Susanna Hoffs' occasionally pensive, understated vocal. I feel like we get an extra ounce of detail and texture through her high belt, too, compared to the competition. Stream XTC's Making Plans for Nigel on Tidal and guitar riffs and whooping vocals attack each ear in one of the most expansive, three-dimensional and fun soundstages I've heard from a set of earbuds – and that's not a statement I make lightly.

For dynamic build, the WF-C700N also shine, with Fontaines D.C.'s I Don't Belong starting out brooding and just slightly further away than the band seems as the track builds to its conclusion.

Want a test of what the Sony WF-C700N can really do for immersive detail? Stream the first 30 seconds Prince's When Doves Cry on Tidal. Listen to how those "yeah"s skulk over from your left ear, around the back of your head and finish in your right. It doesn't feel gimmicky (the funk-heavy bass and guitar licks are masterfully held in check in what is an admirably cohesive mix), but there's so much space for that vocal to shine…

  • Sound quality score: 5/5

Sony WF-C700N review: Design

  • Beautifully compact, ergonomic earpieces
  • Push-button works very well
  • No on-ear volume control

These are some of the most easy to wear, comfortable earbuds I've ever had the pleasure of wearing, a fact which shouldn't be a huge surprise given the Sony LinkBuds S are another firm favorite for my smaller ears. While a little fuller over the body, they fit without having to stretch my ear or screw them in, in any way. And thanks to the new material (which Sony says "holds on to the inner cup of your ear") they stay put for hours on end.

Yes, the case is plastic and feels a shade off high-end, but it's pocketable, functional and shuts with a reassuring snap. The mesh over the mic on each earbud is a stroke of genius because as well as enhancing call-quality and ANC, it's tactile, thus helping my finger navigate to the little raised lip of the multi-function button with ease.

Said button is a great solution. Depress it, and you know you've done something (unlike so many touch-based solutions) and I find myself neglecting my phone to answer calls, scroll through ANC profiles (on the left earbuds) and pause my music (on the right, but this can be customized in the app).

My only gripe here is the lack of on-ear volume control, although Sony says that following a firmware update, it will be possible, with a four-time press "or more" of either earbud. On public transport, it would be lovely not to have to dig my (relatively expensive) source device out from its special safe place in my bag, is all I'm saying.

  • Design score: 4/5

Sony WF-C700N review: Value

  • As feature-packed as any earbuds has any business being for the money
  • A no-brainer for Tidal members
  • Unbeatable for comfort and sound-quality at the level

I'll speak plain: for features, design and most-importantly sound quality, these cannot be bettered for the money. In fact, you'd have to double your outlay to do so.

Okay, if you're prepared to spend over three times the money, there's more detail and sonic insight (through the higher frequencies) to be gleaned from the Bowers & Wilkins Pi7 S2, but those earbuds don't have the battery life or ANC talent of these inexpensive Sony earbuds.

Prior to now, my shout for this money would be the Panasonic RZ-S500W, but in my humble opinion, the Sony WF-C700N now edge those for sound. It's a close-run race, but the bass feels just that bit tighter, snappier and less prone to overstatement in the Sony product.

  • Value score: 5/5

How I tested the Sony WF-C700N

Sony WF-C700N earbuds worn by Becky Scarrott

  • Tested for two weeks, listened against the Cambridge Audio Melomania 1 Plus, Bowers & Wilkins Pi7 S2 and even the Audeze Euclid
  • Used at work (in the office; walking through London; on a train) and at home
  • Listened to Tidal Masters, Apple Music Lossless tracks and Spotify on an iPhone XR, a Samsung Galaxy S22 and a MacBook Pro

As always when testing earbuds or headphones, the Sony WF-C700N became my musical companions for two weeks – after a thorough 48-hour run-in period.

They accompanied me to work on weekdays (walking brusquely to the station; boarding a train and the London Underground; at the office) and throughout a long weekend on the UK coastline – a great way to test any wind-interference from mics during calls.

To better test the comfort levels (and battery life claims) of the Sony WF-C700N, I wore them throughout the working day too – and they certainly did not disappoint.

To check the audio quality across the frequencies, I listened to various playlists (spanning everything from acid jazz to thrash metal) on Apple Music and Tidal, but also to podcasts and albums on Spotify – and YouTube tutorials (mostly about crochet stitches, since you ask) from my MacBook Pro.

I’ve been testing audio products for five years now. As a dancer, aerialist and musical theater performer in another life, sound quality, fit and the user experience have always taken priority for me personally – but having heard how wonderful ANC can be when done well, I know what to look for.

Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow review: soft, supportive and adjustable
4:00 pm |

Author: admin | Category: Computers Gadgets | Comments: Off

The Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow is a versatile choice that lets you remove fill as desired. As a result, you can adjust the height and thickness from high loft to mid loft to low loft, and this makes the pillow versatile enough for side, back and stomach sleepers. Some memory foam pillows have questionable fill; however, the Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow is made of CertiPUR-US certified shredded gel memory foam and microfiber, and it’s free of ozone depleters, PBDEs (polybrominated diphenylethers) and other flame retardants that may cause cancer and genetic defects in unborn children. The pillow is also free from mercury, lead, and other heavy metals, as well as formaldehyde. This makes it a good choice for those with allergies.

In addition, the pillow is marshmallowy soft and has cooling features from two different sources: the gel memory foam, and the organic cotton and polyester blend pillow case. We tested it for two weeks to see how it fares against the best pillows on the market. To boost your sleep comfort further, take a look at our guide to this year's best mattresses for all budgets.

Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow review in brief

The Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow is one of a handful of pillows with adjustable fill. However, this type of pillow is growing in popularity among consumers because it allows them to add or remove fill to get the desired loft. This makes it a compatible pillow for back, stomach, and side sleepers. The adjustable fill pillow is also a good choice for those who sleep with partners, since each person can customize their own pillow.

Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow at a glance

Type: Gel memory foam
Best suited to: Side, back, and stomach sleepers
Dimensions: Standard 20” x 28”; King 20” x 36”
Trial period: 100 nights
Warranty: None

The pillow’s shredded gel memory foam and microfiber combine for an incredibly soft pillow that maintains its shape and provides support. It conforms to the shape of your head, and then slowly bounces back when your upper body is removed. It’s a relatively heavy pillow, not something you’d be tossing in the air. But this girth also makes it less likely that you’ll accidentally knock the pillow on the floor, either.

Cooling features, which include the shredded gel memory foam and the organic cotton and polyester blend pillow case, make this a good choice for hot sleepers. In addition, the outer cover can be removed and laundered, which makes it easy to care for.

Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow review: price and deals

The standard size Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow is available on the Authenticity50 website for $99. The king size pillow is $109. The pillow is not available on third-party websites.

However, you can bundle two standard pillows on the Authenticity50 website for $168 and save 15%. You can also bundle two king pillows for $185, which is also a 15% savings.

The price point puts the Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow in a luxury pillow category. If you have a preference for adjustable pillows, one strong competition is the Layla Kapok Pillow, which is one of our best bed pillows of 2023.

A queen size Layla Kapok Pillow retails for $109 for a queen, and it also zips open so you can add or remove fill. In addition, the Layla pillow comes with an extra bag of fill – compared to the Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow, which will provide extra fill if you contact the company’s customer service department and request more. Also, instead of gel memory foam, the Kapok pillow is made of natural Kapok fibers (harvested from the seeds of Kapok trees and designed to create a down-like feeling) along with shredded memory foam and a breathable cover.

For a completely customizable pillow, the Pluto Pillow (which is also similar in appearance to the Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow) is more expensive at $125, but lets you build the perfect pillow after taking a quiz that asks your age, height, weight, sleeping position(s), mattress firmness, preferred pillow cover surface, and a few other questions. These questions help to ensure you’re getting a pillow that precisely fits your preferences.  But the fill is not adjustable.

The pillow has adjustable fill for a high, mid, or low loft, along with cooling features. The plush, squishy pillow is a good choice for any type of sleeper. This pillow isn't available from 3rd party retailers.

Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow review: design and materials

  • Shredded gel memory foam and microfiber
  • Pillow is squishy and marshmallowy
  • Cooling cover is machine washable

The Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow is made of CertiPUR-US certified foams that are free from ozone depleters, PBDEs (polybrominated diphenyl ethers) and other TCEP flame retardants that may cause cancer and genetic defects in unborn children, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals, and also free from formaldehyde. This also makes the pillow a good choice for those who suffer from allergies.

The hand-sewn pillow is marshmallowy soft and squishy – albeit, it’s a heavier pillow than some, so you won’t be tossing it up in the air, and it wouldn’t make for a fun pillow fight, either. On the other hand, pillows can easily get knocked off the bed and onto the floor. However, since the Authenticity50 pillow has some weight to it, this shouldn’t be a problem.

The gel memory foam and microfiber blend provide a cool sleeping experience. The fill is covered by a stretchy inner liner, which makes it easy to add or remove the contents for a plusher or firmer pillow. The inner liner is covered by a case made of organic cotton and polyester. The case (or outer cover) is soft to the touch, and also contributes to the cooling effect, and it can be removed to launder in the washing machine on a cold, gentle cycle and then you can tumble dry the pillow on low.

Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow review: performance

  • Adjustable fill is supportive in any position
  • Temperature regulation keeps you cool
  • Marshmallowy feeling is soft and comfortable

For over two weeks, we slept on a pair of Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillows to see how they fared in performance, testing for setup, comfort, support, and temperature regulation. We also slept on side, back, and stomach positions to see if the performance was consistent. Here’s how we got on...

Setup

5 out of 5 stars

The pair of Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillows arrived in a plain, brown shipping box that was stuffed with brown Kraft paper.  The pillows were packaged well, and arrived in perfect condition. The pillows were vacuum sealed – which we appreciate from a health and safety perspective. We put the pillows on the bed and cut the plastic so they could start expanding. As soon as we cut the plastic, the pillows started expanding immediately. We left the room and when we came back 30 minutes later, the pillows had expanded somewhat but were not as plump as we desired.

Two Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillows, one still rolled in plastic

Authenticity50 provides two options for prepping the pillows after removing the pillows from the plastic. We could either fluff by hand or pop the pillows into the dryer on the fluff setting for 5 to 10 minutes. We chose the latter, and you can see how fluffier the pillows look. At their maximum fill, we thought the pillows would be a little fluffier, but we’re not taking points off.

We did not experience any off gassing from the pillows.

Temperature regulation

4.5 out of 5 stars

Thankfully, the Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillows did not trap body heat. Our tester tends to sleep hot, and the pillows remained cool overnight. This coolness was consistent even when she later added a faux fur throw into the mix. We attribute the temperature regulation to the gel memory foam and microfiber blend. While memory foam can be hot, gel memory foam has cooling properties.

Close up of the Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow's cover

In addition, the inner liner is covered by an outer case made of organic cotton and polyester. In addition to being soft to the touch, this material also contributes to the pillow’s cooling effect. While our tester didn’t find the pillow to be actually cool to the touch, like some pillows, it did indeed provide a cool sleeping experience

Firmness and support

5 out of 5 stars

The level of firmness and support provided by the Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow will largely depend on the user’s preference. Our tester likes soft, plush pillows with a medium to high loft, which was ideal when sleeping on her back and side. However, enough fill to create a thin pillow when sleeping on her stomach since this low loft position would keep her neck in alignment with her torso.  In each position, adjusting the fill created the right loft for the sleep position.

However, keep in mind that loft preferences can vary. For example, some side sleepers prefer a mid loft, while others prefer a low loft.

The Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow opened up to show its fill

The only complaint our tester had: she would have liked more fill to create a higher loft when sleeping on her side or back. (This doesn’t mean that the pillow was faulty – it’s only a reflection of her preference for fluffy pillows.) According to Authenticity50, you can contact the company to get more fill, free of charge.

Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow review: user reviews

The Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow is not sold on Amazon or other 3rd-party retailers. On the Authenticity50 website, there are 510 reviews, and the pillow has a rating of 4.85 out of 5 stars. The reviews are overwhelmingly positive, and customers noted that the pillows are comfortable. Some called it the best pillow they’d ever tried, with others stating that the pillow supports their neck and head, and it provides a good night’s sleep.

Among the roughly dozen negative reviews, some of the verified buyers thought the pillow was great and had no negative comments (perhaps they misunderstood the 1 to 5 scale). Also, some people said the pillows never arrived, and one person complained about the squishy feeling.

Should you buy the Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow?

Two stacked Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow

Whether you’re a side, back, or stomach sleeper, the Authenticity50 Custom Comfort Pillow can adjust to your needs. Stomach and side sleepers may want to leave all of the fill in the pillows for a high loft, or remove some of the fill for a mid-loft option, and even more fill can be removed for back sleepers who want a low loft pillow. Allergy sufferers will appreciate that the pillow is made of CertiPUR-US certified shredded gel memory foam and microfiber, so the pillow is free from harmful chemicals and ingredients. And the temperature regulation provides the extra benefit of keeping sleepers cool.

For the same price, another alternative adjustable fill pillow is the Layla Kapok Pillow, which also zips open – and even comes with an extra bag of fill, which is a great option for those who’d like an even higher loft. Also, instead of gel memory foam, the Kapok pillow is made of natural Kapok fibers (and designed to create the sensation of sleeping on a down pillow), combined with shredded memory foam - and it has a breathable cover.

On the other hand, the Pluto Pillow (which is more expensive) provides a totally customized experience. It includes a quiz that asks your age, height, weight, sleeping position(s), mattress firmness, preferred pillow cover surface, and a few other questions. Your answers help the company to select the best pillow depending on your preferences.

As a business owner, you need a reliable and secure web hosting service to ensure that your online presence runs smoothly. With so many services available out there, it can be overwhelming to choose the best web hosting tool for your business.

One web hosting service that stands out is Nexcess. Founded in 2000 and based in Southfield, Michigan, USA, Nexcess provides various hosting solutions for businesses of all sizes. It offers a range of hosting services including shared hosting, managed WordPress hosting, cloud hosting, and dedicated server hosting.

Nexcess features

One of the standout features of the Nexcess service is its autoscaling capabilities. This means that if your website experiences a sudden surge in traffic, Nexcess can automatically increase the resources allocated to your site to ensure it stays up and running smoothly.

Another useful feature is the ability to create development sites. This allows you to test out changes to your website or store before pushing them live. With the development sites feature, you can experiment with new themes, plugins, and other changes without worrying about disrupting your live site. Nexcess also offers a CDN (Content Delivery Network), which can help improve the speed and performance of your site by caching your content and delivering it from a server that's geographically closer to your visitors.

Containers are another key feature of Nexcess that I like. By using containers, Nexcess can isolate your site's resources from other sites on the same server, which can help improve security and prevent resource conflicts. SSL Certificates are included with all Nexcess hosting plans, which can help secure your site and protect visitors' data.

If you're running an ecommerce site, you'll appreciate Nexcess's PCI compliance features. This ensures that your site meets the payment card industry data security standards, which can help protect your customers' payment information.

Nexcess also offers DNS management tools, which can help you easily manage your domain's DNS settings. If you're looking to switch hosting providers, you'll be pleased to know that Nexcess offers free migration services. Its team of experts can help you move your site to Nexcess with minimal downtime or disruption.

Nexcess also offers a wide range of hosting options, including Magento, WooCommerce, WordPress, StoreBuilder, Sylius, ExpressionEngine, Craft CMS, Flexible Cloud, and Enterprise Hosting. This means that no matter what platform you're using, there's a hosting plan that's tailored to your needs.

Nexcess performance

The first test I conducted for Nexcess’s WordPress site involved the WebPageTest feature, a widely-used speed test tool. I set up a WordPress site and ran the URL via WebPageTest in six different locations worldwide. My site loaded in five seconds, which is somewhat slower than competitors like Bluehost and SiteGround. However, it is still a decent time frame for a website to load entirely.

Next, I used Load Focus, another popular speed test tool, to measure Nexcess’s performance. Load Focus simulates real-world scenarios like browsing, surfing, and transactions on your site, to give a more accurate view of its performance. The outcome was impressive, with Nexcess’s website loading speed averaging 2.51 seconds. It goes on to show that Nexcess can handle a reasonable influx of traffic. Speed, security, and caching are three vital aspects of an ideal web host. With Nexcess, you can opt for shared hosting, VPS hosting, or dedicated hosting plans, with differing levels of support provided in each. Regardless of what you choose, speed, security, and caching are given priority. It is evident that Nexcess has invested in excellent technology to ensure that they meet customers’ needs by providing them with fast, secure, and reliable web hosting services.

Nexcess is knowledgeable of its client's needs, and as such, it offers customized web hosting packages to meet those needs. It uses top-of-the-range hardware alongside content optimization techniques that ensure your website pages load faster.

There are no overage fees, traffic limits, or metered pageviews, and proactive server monitoring and support from WordPress experts is available 24/7. For fully managed WooCommerce hosting, Nexcess offers a plan starting at $15.83 per month. The plan includes built-in image compression, abandoned cart and page builder plugins, 1-click staging, sales monitoring, and checkout testing. The plan also includes free Object Cache Pro for fast-loading products, extra PHP workers for smooth checkout with a global CDN and DNS service.

Proactive monitoring and helpful support from WooCommerce experts is available 24/7. Nexcess's fully managed Magento hosting starts at $31.00 per month and includes daily backups, PCI compliance, built-in Elasticsearch for M2.4+, add-on server clusters, and expert 24/7 support. The plan also includes server-side scripting, dedicated IP addresses, and instant autoscaling.

On-demand performance testing is available to troubleshoot and improve site speed, and the built-in edge CDN offers 22 locations and advanced caching for ultra-fast loading. Support from Magento experts is available 24/7, and the plan includes generous resources and PHP workers for robust performance.

How fast is Nexcess?

With eight data centers spread across the US, Europe, and Asia Pacific, Nexcess carefully selects each location based on security, performance, and strategic positioning.

The company owns three of its data centers, including the US-Central, US-West, and EU-Central regions, which contain over 25,000 servers with redundant cooling, networks, and power to ensure uptime and speed. Additionally, all Nexcess data centers are PCI compliant and have a 24/7 support team to provide extra security and support. Nexcess uses cutting-edge technologies such as MySQL 5.7, SSDs, PHP 7.0/7.1, RAID, and Apache 2.4 to optimize cloud storage and improve website performance. These technologies help reduce memory usage, enhance load balancing, and increase security, resulting in faster website load times.

One of the significant advantages of Nexcess is its 99.9% network uptime guarantee, which is rarely seen in the web hosting industry. Nexcess also offers several features to enhance website speed, such as tier-1 bandwidth connections that minimize latency across the globe and built-in image optimization tools that compress images to ensure fast loading.

Additionally, the company supports the latest PHP 7 and HTTP/2, further improving site speed and security. In the event of a massive influx of traffic, Nexcess's Auto-scaling add-on automatically allocates more resources to your website for free for 24 hours to avoid any downtime on your WP site, which is one of the main reasons for losing visitors. However, if the increased traffic continues, you may eventually need to upgrade to a more expensive plan with enhanced capabilities. Overall, Nexcess provides superior performance and speed, making it an excellent choice for businesses and individuals looking for reliable web hosting.

Nexcess security features are available across all plans

Nexcess security

One of the easiest ways to keep your website secure is to ensure that you are always running the latest version of WordPress and any plugins you have installed. Nexcess takes care of these updates for you, including visual comparison testing to automatically catch any update problems before they happen on your live site. This means you don't have to worry about manually updating your website and can focus on running your business.

Another crucial security feature of Nexcess is the automatic daily backups and on-demand backups. In the event of a security breach or issue with your website, you can easily restore your website to a previous version. This security feature ensures that your website is always recoverable, even in the worst-case scenario.

Nexcess also provides free access to iThemes Security Pro, a powerful security plugin for WordPress. This plugin includes features like two-factor authentication, malware scanning, and brute force protection. With iThemes Security Pro, you can add an extra layer of security to your website and protect it from potential security threats.

An SSL certificate is a must-have for any website that collects sensitive information, such as credit card details or personal information. Nexcess provides free SSL certificates, ensuring your website is secure and adding an extra layer of trust for your customers. Testing your website updates, changes, or new features can be a time-consuming process. However, with Nexcess, this process is made easy with the one-click staging site security feature. This feature allows you to create a clone of your live site where you can test new changes before deploying them to your live site. This ensures that you don't disrupt your live site and can quickly fix any issues that arise.

Nexcess also offers malware monitoring as part of its security features. This service constantly scans your website to detect any security threats, and if any are found, Nexcess's team will act quickly to remove the threat and restore your website's security.
