AVM is known for doing things a little bit differently with networking features to make their routers stand out from the crowd, and sure enough, the Fritz!Box 5690 Pro is no different. The 5690 Pro has been designed for home and small business use, and what makes this particular model stand out from the competition is just how future-proof it is, being fully compatible with the latest technologies such as fibre and Wi-Fi 7 as well as backward compatible with what has come before.

As such, it takes the leap to Wi-Fi 7, meaning that if you have the latest devices, iPhone 16, Vivo X200 you can ensure that you get the fastest possible internet speeds. It also features two internal routers, one that enables DSL and the other fibre connections, meaning that if you've just swapped to fibre, or you know that you're going to in the near future, you can upgrade to this router knowing that it will be suitable for use later on.

Compared with many home routers, there are a few more options for connectivity on the back. Alongside the fibre and DSL to connect you to the outer world, there's compatibility for a telephone and some smart home devices built-in, so connecting an internal phone network for a small business or connecting to your smart devices in your home is made much easier with the use of this router.

Getting started with the router wasn’t as straightforward as many others that I've tested, and there are plenty of options through the setup process. Essentially, you need to know a bit more than the standard user about what type of internet connection you have, fibre, DSL, or other, and through the setup process, you're asked for speeds and other specifications that need to be answered accurately in order to make the most of what this box has to offer.

Whilst I didn't have the optional smart home additions such as the Fritz!Fon and Fritz! Smart, it's great to see that AVM has not just thought about this as a router that’s going to draw in the internet into your house or small business, but also as the expandable heart of a larger networking ecosystem.

Right from the start of this test, whilst the design, graphics and look of the Fritz!Box 5690 Pro do make it look extremely user-friendly and for the mass market, which in many ways it is, if you really want to make the most of what’s on offer here, especially those smart home features and the more advanced fibre connection, then you are going to need a higher level of network understanding.

Once you do get everything set and configured, the signal strength and speed are exceptionally good. However, used as just a straightforward router, this is on the expensive side - given that cost, it's unlikely to make it into our best Wi-Fi router round-up. But if you consider it as just the start of your home or business networking hub, especially with mesh, smart home options and an easy way to set up an internal telephone system, then it suddenly becomes very good value, which is matched by excellent performance.

The styling of the 5690 Pro is quite different from most other wireless home or small business routers. It's relatively large with two prominent WLAN and Connect buttons on the red detailing around the right-hand side of the unit, and four very clearly laid-out LED indicators showing connection and status.

Around the back, everything is clearly laid out, with options for both DSL and fibre connectivity. Most of us are still on DSL, which is pretty straightforward to set up, but the great point here is that it's ready for fibre as well, and in the box you're provided with a fibre-optic cable ready to get going. You just need to check that you have an ONT (Optical Network Terminal) that supports the fibre-optic cable connection. That means that it doesn’t just offer the usual network socket, but also features an optical option.

One of the first things that highlights that this is completely different from anything else is the fact that it comes with two SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) modules, essentially a plug-in adapter, which slot into the back of the unit depending on the type of fibre connection you're using. There's one module for AON up to one gigabit and another for GPON up to 2.5Gbps. This is the first of what could be a few stumbling blocks where you have to pick the correct one for your connection. If you’re on DSL then you don’t have to worry.

Once the SFP is installed, you can then connect your DSL, any analogue phones that you have, your WAN/LAN, and up to four gigabit LAN connections directly to computers. There's also a USB 3.1 port if you need to connect a USB stick or a hard drive.

The ports at the back are quite recessed, which helps protect them from getting knocked, offering a good amount of protection compared with most routers that simply have the cables sticking out.
When it comes to power, the router comes with its own power lead straight into the AC mains.

One of the other features that I liked from the outset was the WLAN button on the red detailing. This enables you to quickly turn the WLAN on and off without logging in to a web interface. A quick press will switch off the internet if you want to disable it overnight.

The second button is the Connect button, and this uses WPS pairing, ready for mesh setup. A quick push starts WPS pairing, and a longer press (up to 6 seconds) initiates the mesh connection mode.

Finally, there are four LEDs along the front. The first is Info, this is a custom status LED you can set up through the Fritz!OS, so if you do have a system that you would like a visual confirmation for, then you can assign it to this LED. Then you have Fon, which is for the phone connection, either analogue or VOIP, and will only activate if there's a phone plugged in.

The next LED is WLAN, and if this is solid, it shows that the WLAN is connected and working. Likewise, the Power/Internet LED indicates that you're connected and powered on. Otherwise, the design remains simple, with most advanced features accessible through the browser interface.

One of the big features here is that it has a built-in fibre through the SFP module as well as a DSL modem, so there's no additional hardware needed. You can just take it out of the box and get started. When it comes to fibre, those two SFP modules included, one for 1Gbps and the other 2.5Gbps dependent on your connection.

Next up on the ports is the DSL and telephone port, alongside a 2.5Gbps WAN/LAN port. There are also four gigabit LAN ports for connecting computers and a USB 3.1 port.

The telephone port supports a telephone/DECT telephone system that enables cordless telephony, where this 5690 Pro box acts as a DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) base station. So if you're running a small business and need to set up an internal phone network, then this is a great option. Whilst the price for a standard router might seem expensive, when you start to factor in all these additional features, it becomes very good value.

It's worth pointing out that whilst there are plenty of features here, it will only support one internet connection at a time. This should be fine for most homes and small businesses, but if you're operating a more complex network with a dual connection, then you'll need to upgrade to a more enterprise-level router or just have two.

The Fritz!Box supports Wi-Fi 7, which enables it to simultaneously use three frequencies, 2.4GHz, 5GHz and the new 6GHz band. This multi-link operation (MLO) enables it to use multiple frequency bands for greater stability and compatibility with devices.

This box theoretically enables speeds of about 18,500Mbps, using the fastest 6GHz band at 11,530Mbps, the 5GHz band at up to 5,760Mbps, and the 2.4GHz band at 1,200Mbps. It’s just worth pointing out here that only the 5GHz and 6GHz bands will support full Wi-Fi 7 wireless connectivity.

Alongside the router, there are also a wide variety of smart home accessories, including the Repeater 6000. So if you live in a larger house or have a larger office where the Wi-Fi signal starts to get weak, then attaching one of these at a midway point will help boost the signal throughout in a mesh-style system.

Likewise, there’s also a telephone system with DECT that enables up to six cordless handsets to be connected, and Zigbee smart home control is also built into this router. Again, all of these features are great to see in a router of this type, but accessing them does take some technical know-how.

Alongside the hardware, you also have the Fritz!OS, and this enables you to manage router passwords, settings and access. You can also set up features such as advanced parental controls and guest Wi-Fi options, which is great if you're running a small business or have guests in your house and don't want them on the main network. It also enables you to set up a media server that will provide NAS-like functions using USB storage or a dedicated NAS.

Getting started with the Fritz!Box 5690 Pro was relatively straightforward, with the unit being removed from the box, plugged in and then the DSL cable connected. Unfortunately, while I have fibre running to the house, my box does not enable me to connect directly through the fibre optic cable into a router.
This means that whilst I can test the Wi-Fi 7 capabilities, when it comes to checking the speeds, I will be limited by that DSL connection.

One of the first things that was apparent compared with the router and mesh system that is presently installed in both the house and my office was that the single router unit had a far greater range. I was able to pass through several walls and a distance of over 8 metres without attaching a repeater.

During the test period, the router was left in place for over four weeks, supplying the household with its main internet connection, used for network storage, general household internet use and TV, and during that time the connection proved exceptionally reliable, with the ability to log on through the https://fritz.box URL to access the router options and settings.

One thing that became apparent during the initial process, and again when further devices were connected, was that, unlike some of the out-of-the-box router options available, the 5690 Pro does require a bit more technical knowledge to get set up and running. That knowledge will only become more necessary when switching over to a true fibre connection, with not only the need to connect up the fibre-optic cable, which is straightforward, but also to know the exact details of your connection type.

For the most part, the speed of the connection was exceptionally good. It's just a shame that the network port for LAN is limited to 2.5Gbps, not 10Gbps, which I would’ve expected with a router this fast. However, with a two NAS attached, the transfer rates to and from that box were excellent and on par with my existing system. Using my MacBook Pro M1 Max, I did notice that compared to the Eero router, there was very little speed difference. However, when I switched over to the ASUS ExpertBook equipped with Wi-Fi 7, I saw a significant uptick in speed.

What I also really liked was that, unlike my standard routers that offer only one or one network ports on the back, here I had four additional gigabit LAN ports, meaning that I could keep two NAS units and a network adapter attached at all times to the router, just making access between all network-connected devices that much easier.

During the test, it became very obvious that when it comes to the Fritz!Box 5690 Pro, you should really think of this as the heart of your networking ecosystem, and one that’s future-proof, ready for fibre if you haven't already made the move from DSL.

It packs a lot into one small box with its dual modem and two connection types. Once it's set up and installed, you can use it for standard internet, phone calls, and also for operating all your smart home gadgets, of which Fritz! offers a good selection. If you already have smart home gadgets, however, then you do need to check compatibility. While it fully supports DECT ULE and some Zigbee 3.0 protocols, it’s not fully compatible with all devices, although there’s usually a workaround if you have the technical knowledge.

Those additions to the Fritz! Box ecosystem comes at an extra cost, but if you're setting up a small business and looking for a complete solution, then this is a solid option. Likewise, if you're setting up a smart home and have a bit of technical knowledge, again, this is a good choice, which actually balances out the price when you consider everything that's included.

If you're just looking for a straightforward Wi-Fi 7 router, then this might be a bit more advanced than you need, but it’s great to see that level of flexibility. The fact that it has additional gigabit LAN ports on the back does make it extremely useful and one step up from your average router, even at a base level, and for the last month I haven’t had to uplug units in order to make room for review gear.

By the end of the test, I was impressed with the quality of the wireless connection, even through my DSL connection, the performance over Wi-Fi 7 was a noticeable step up from the Wi-Fi 6 system I currently have installed. But what stood out more was that I could plug my NAS straight in, along with other network-connected devices, and there was the option to add in a telephone system as well. That means I could have a phone in the office, studio and workshop, keeping my work number separate from my personal mobile.

If you run a small business or work from home and have plenty of devices connected to the internet, then this is a solid option. You might need some technical knowledge for the more advanced features, but as a straight out-of-the-box option, it isn’t too difficult to work out, and will provide you not only with reliable internet, but a future-proof design and feature set that should last for years.

Seagate FireCuda 530R with heatsink: One-minute review

The Seagate FireCuda 530R with heatsink could be one of the best SSDs for PS5 but, at least for the moment, the pricing is out of control. The 1TB model is difficult to find, while the 2TB and 4TB variants come in at an eye-watering $365 / £220 and $599 / £539.99 respectively at third party sellers on sites like Amazon and Newegg.

This makes it almost impossible to recommend at these prices, especially when alternatives like the WD Black SN850P and Lexar NM790 with Heatsink are in stock cheaper. Of course, this is entirely being driven by the ongoing RAM shortage (which also affects SSDs with DRAM chips), so I will look to update this review if and when they come down to more reasonable rates.

Pricing aside, the Seagate FireCuda 530R with heatsink is a solid, if somewhat unremarkable, PS5 SSD. With quoted read speeds of up to 7,400 MB/s read and 7,000 MB/s write (for the 1TB model) it’s one of the fastest models on the market on paper - though I found its performance to be less impressive in the real world than these figures would suggest.

The 2TB model that I tested scored an underwhelming 6,030MB/s speed on the internal PS5 storage benchmark putting it behind both the WD Black SN850P and Lexar NM790 with Heatsink, not to mention the company’s own officially licensed Seagate Game Drive M.2 SSD for PS5. Still, it’s comfortably above the 5,500 MB/s speed recommended by Sony and doesn’t increase loading times in any noticeable way.

As you would expect for a model marketed towards PS5 owners, the Seagate FireCuda 530R with heatsink comes with a chunky heatsink fitted out of the box. It’s very similar to the one found on the Seagate Game Drive M.2 SSD - albeit with a colorful orange line graphic rather than a blue one. As is the case with that drive, I found it to be perfectly effective.

As a result, the Seagate FireCuda 530R with heatsink could be a great pick for the right price. At the moment, I wouldn’t rush to add it to your basket though given the inflated rates.

In the US the Seagate FireCuda 530R with heatsink costs around $130 for the 1TB model - though I wasn’t able to find any retailers carrying stock of that variant at the time of writing. 2TB and 4TB models are easier to find though with stock available at Newegg. There, 2TB goes for $365, while 4TB is $599. Both of these prices come from a third-party seller and are disproportionately high, so I would avoid buying them for now.

In the UK it’s even harder to find, as it’s currently out of stock at Amazon. Historical price data shows that the 1TB model cost around £145, while the 2TB was £220 when both were in stock. The 4TB model is currently available at Overclockers UK, where it costs £539.99.

Seagate told me that a 1TB model of the drive is currently meant to cost $114.99 / £158.99, while 2TB and 4TB are supposed to be $194.99 / £271.99 and $394.99 / £516.99 respectively - though the representative was careful to clarify that “SSD prices are currently very volatile” and “can change daily” (that latter part was even in bold for emphasis).

Seagate FireCuda 530R with heatsink: Design and features

The Seagate FireCuda 530R with heatsink looks remarkably similar to the Seagate Game Drive M.2 SSD for PS5, though with some small aesthetic differences. For starters, the chunky heatsink of the FireCuda bears a little ‘FireCuda’ logo print and a subtle orange decal. Despite the size of the heatsink, this model easily fits into the PS5’s storage bay.

It comes well-packaged in a plastic tray with a little foam insert to keep the pins safe and a little pack of documentation. In there you’ll find an advert for Seagate’s Rescue data recovery service, a basic manual with some general advice on fitting the SSD, and information about the drive’s warranty.

In applicable regions you get five years of limited warranty coverage here, which should be enough to see you through the rest of the PS5’s lifespan and is on par with what’s offered by the competition. The drive’s quoted 5,050 TBW durability is also excellent.

Despite the lofty quoted speeds, the Seagate FireCuda 530R with heatsink achieved quite an underwhelming result in the PS5’s internal storage benchmark coming to just 6,030MB/s which is on the lower end of the results for SSDs that I’ve tested. Still, this is more than fast enough for the PS5 and in my testing didn’t impact playing in any noticeable way.

While the substantially cheaper Lexar NM790 with Heatsink caused occasional stutters in demanding games like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the Seagate FireCuda 530R with heatsink was silky smooth in every title that I tested.

Its performance in my usual real-world file transfer tests was also decent. Copy to the SSD from the PS5’s internal storage, 68.75GB of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 took just 44 seconds to transfer. The drive performs very well with even larger file sizes too, with the 86.33GB Ghost of Yotei copied in just 45 seconds. A combination of both games totaling 154.7GB only took 1 minute and 24 seconds.

Smaller titles were a little bit slower, with the 16.85GB Wuchang: Fallen Feathers taking eight seconds and the tiny 1.2GB C Smash VRS taking just two.

Copying from the SSD back to the console, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and Ghost of Yotei were ready in 4 minutes and 41 seconds and 6 minutes and 5 seconds respectively, while both at once took 10 minutes and 17 seconds. Finally, Wuchang: Fallen Feathers was ready to launch after 1 minute and 13 seconds while C Smash VRS took 13 seconds. These figures are all perfectly adequate, though realistically more dependent on the PS5’s internal write speed than anything else.

There was no noticeable slowdown throughout my testing, which would indicate that the chunky heatsink does its job well and curbs thermal throttling.

Should I buy the Seagate FireCuda 530R with heatsink?

Buy it if...

You find it for the right price
The Seagate FireCuda 530R with heatsink is far too expensive for what it is at the moment. Stock is also hard to find and I’m hopeful that prices will become more reasonable when supply is a bit more plentiful.

You’re after a 4TB model
Unlike the company’s officially licensed Seagate Game Drive M.2 SSD for PS5, the Seagate FireCuda 530R with heatsink is available in a 4TB model. This gives you a compelling reason to choose it, despite the lack of PlayStation branding, if you feel you need a hefty amount of storage space.

Don't buy it if...

You want the fastest performance for your money
Drives like the Samsung 990 Pro with heatsink proved faster than the Seagate FireCuda 530R with heatsink in my testing - so I’d recommend them instead if you’re after the very top performance.

How I tested the Seagate FireCuda 530R with heatsink

I tested the Seagate FireCuda 530 with heatsink for a week, fitting it to my personal PS5 console. During that time I evaluated its performance with a range of copy tests, in addition to recording the console’s internal benchmark score and trying it with a range of installed games to determine whether the SSD would cause any impact on smoothness.

Huawei MatePad 12X 2025 review: two-minute review

The Huawei MatePad 12X 2025 is a mid-range tablet with a bright, paper-like PaperMatte display, a solid chipset, and a seriously capacious battery. It has all the makings of a great tablet, right up until you come up against its fundamental flaw.

Let’s put a pin in that for now. The display is seriously impressive, capable of exquisitely detailed images with its 280 ppi pixel density. It’s also wonderfully bright, hitting a peak brightness of 1000 nits, and has impressive color reproduction that rendered the nature videos I watched with wonderfully punchy hues.

Pretty much the only criticism I have of the screen is that it’s a little too easy to scuff. After a few sketching sessions with the Huawei M-Pencil Pro (sold separately), the display had a few light scrapes across it, something I’ve not experienced when using the best tablets out there.

The performance of the Huawei MatePad 12X 2025’s Kirin T92B Octa-core processor and 12GB RAM is also genuinely impressive. While playing PUBG Mobile at max settings, I didn’t detect a hint of frame rate drops or latency, making it easy to take out my opponents. Meanwhile, no matter how many simultaneous apps I was running or tabs I opened, the tablet never seemed to experience any slowdown.

If you fancy lengthy gaming sessions or want to work on the go, the MatePad 12X 2025 offers a generous battery capacity of 10,100mAh. In practice, that was enough to stream 2.5K videos for almost nine hours straight, meaning you should have plenty of battery for a medium-haul flight or a full working day. And topping it up took hardly any time at all, thanks to its 66W charging – you should be able to go from 0% to 100% in around 75 minutes, which is fantastic.

Perhaps less exciting is the MatePad 12X 2025’s design. While it’s razor thin at 5.9mm and very comfortable to hold, it doesn't have the most adventurous styling, and it could be made of slightly more premium-feeling materials than its matte plastic. Both the included keyboard case and the M-Pencil Pro are well put together, though, with an ergonomic design and robust build.

Unfortunately, it’s time to return to that issue we put a pin in earlier. With ongoing restrictions around access to US-based apps, there’s a real paucity of apps available on Huawei’s devices. Much of the software you’ll want to use on a daily basis, from Netflix to Google Docs, simply isn’t available, really reducing the MatePad’s actual utility. In light of this, it's hard to recommend the tablet, even with some excellent first-party apps like its GoPaint drawing app.

I’d love to be able to give the MatePad 12X 2025 a glowing recommendation, as it has some real strengths. But the lack of mainstream apps available on Huawei’s tablet puts it at a real disadvantage compared to other devices. Fundamentally, you’ll be better off considering one of the best Android tablets instead.

Launched on September 19, 2025, the Huawei MatePad 12X 2025 is available now in the UK. While its initial list price was £599, it’s already seeing reductions, with Huawei selling it direct for £499.

Unlike the Huawei MatePad 11.5 released in August 2025, the MatePad 12X 2025 includes Huawei’s keyboard case in the box, which is definitely a nice extra to have. Not included as standard is Huawei’s M-Pencil Pro, but if you buy it along with the tablet, it’ll cost you just £39.99, rather than its £129.99 list price, making it a bit of a bargain.

In terms of colorways, you get just two options: the mint green that we tested here and white.

Huawei MatePad 12X 2025 review: display

  • Crisp, 280 ppi resolution
  • Seriously bright
  • Gets marked easily

I have to say that, for a mid-market tablet, the Huawei MatePad 12X 2025’s display is pretty impressive. Its resolution can give the iPad Pro a run for its money: packing 2800 x 1840 pixels across its 12-inch screen, it’s capable of a 280 ppi pixel density, while Apple’s largest high-end tablet sits at 2752 x 2064 and 264 ppi. So while 4K videos didn’t look quite as crisp as on my TCL C8K TV, I was still pleasantly surprised by how much detail the 12X could reveal.

The sheer brightness of Huawei’s slate also made an impression on me. While its 1000-nit peak brightness can’t quite rival the iPad Pro’s 1600 nits, it leaves the iPad 11-inch (2025) quite literally in the shade with a brightness of just 500 nits. Putting the screen through its paces with some 4K BBC Earth videos on YouTube, I found it’s also capable of pretty punchy contrast and decent color reproduction. It might not be quite as lush and bold as the OLED displays of some slates these days, but it’s a looker nonetheless.

It’s certainly helped in this regard by Huawei’s PaperMatte screen tech. During most of my testing, I was using the MatePad 12X under bright, artificial lighting, and this thing just gulped down direct light, meaning I rarely had to worry about reflections marring my experience.

On top of this, the PaperMatte display’s etched glass was a treat to interact with, giving the screen a pleasingly tactile feel. It doesn’t feel quite as realistic to write and sketch on with Huawei’s M-Pencil stylus as dedicated writing tablets like the Kindle Scribe or ReMarkable – the nib slips more than I’ve experienced with these rival slates – but I still found it pleasant enough to sketch on. And at least this smoothness prevented the stylus from catching too much.

Really, my only criticism of the MatePad 12X’s display is how easy it is to mark. I’ve only used it for a couple of sketches so far, and there’s already a pronounced pen scuff visible on the screen when it’s powered down. These kinds of marks could easily build up over time, so if you were to buy the MatePad 12X, a screen protector would be a wise investment.

Huawei MatePad 12X 2025 review: design

  • Not the most adventurous design

When it comes to its design, the Huawei MatePad 12X is inoffensive, almost to a fault. There’s nothing wrong with its matte plastic body or its two colorways – White and the mint-colored Greenery – per se, but a metallic build might have helped it feel just a touch more premium.

Fortunately, it is well put together, feeling substantial and sturdy enough in your hand while being light enough to hold easily. In fact, while it’s a shade heavier than the iPad 11-inch (2025), weighing in at 555g to 481g for Apple’s cellular model, it’s a little slimmer at the same time, measuring 5.9mm in depth rather than 7mm.

Huawei is reinventing the wheel here, but the MatePad 12X’s case is well designed. It follows the common mold of combining case, keyboard and stand all in one, but is flexible enough to suit every situation I was using it for. And its keys are pleasant to type on. Naturally, they don’t have the satisfying thunk of deeper travel keys, but at least they offer enough feedback that I never found touch typing on them to be a challenge.

One small oversight here compared to rivals like the iPad 11-inch (2025) or Microsoft Surface Pro 12 (2025) is that the case doesn’t include a trackpad. While I’d normally class this as a ‘nice to have’, you’ll probably only miss it when you want to crank through a lot of productivity and professional uses. And here the Huawei MatePad 12X has much bigger issues that dwarf the lack of a mouse input.

Huawei MatePad 12X 2025 review: software

  • Excellent first-party apps
  • Too few familiar apps available
  • Some unnecessary bloatware

Look. We all knew we'd have to have ‘the talk’ at some point. Most of you will be aware of the big challenge facing Huawei tablets by now, given they’ve been ongoing for over three years at this point. But it’s almost impossible to review Huawei devices objectively without bringing it up.

As a result of the Federal Communications Commission’s ban on Huawei in November 2022, many US-based brands no longer provide access to their apps on Huawei devices. Most notably, that includes the Google Play Store and full Google Suite, but it also affects the vast majority of apps you’ll be used to using.

Browsing the Huawei AppGallery, almost all of my go-to apps are absent. Spotify? Gone. Netflix? Gone. Facebook? Gone. Amazon? Gone. None of them are available as direct downloads. Although some are accessible as third-party APKs, this exposes you to potential security risks that downloading them directly wouldn’t. Sure, the odd app like Uber will fire up a browser version so you can still book a ride, but you’re still losing all the convenience that having an app installed on your desktop offers.

Inevitably, this also has a significant impact on the games that are available on the MatePad 12X. I probably spend more of my life playing mobile games than is strictly good for me, and yet, aside from PUBG Mobile and Candy Crush Saga, I barely recognized any of the other games on the Huawei AppGallery. The few I had heard of were those games you see advertised online with ads that don’t remotely reflect the gameplay, which didn’t fill me with confidence about digging through the charts at random.

What’s frustrating about this is that it's entirely out of Huawei’s control and, in fact, the apps it does control are well-made and offer great features. For example, Huawei’s GoPaint app is a pretty great drawing app for something just bundled in with an operating system, feeling a lot like if ProCreate came preinstalled on your iPad. It’s packed with brushes and blending options, and I had no end of fun whipping up watercolor-style pictures on it.

Likewise, Huawei’s Notes app is seriously versatile. I could quickly create notebooks with every template I might need, from musical staves to SWOT analysis charts. Its handwriting-to-text feature isn’t flawless, but given the chicken-scratch I produce any time I scribble by hand, it did a pretty commendable job.

Not every app that comes installed on the MatePad 12X feels this essential, though; there’s still a lot of bloatware on this tablet. I’m definitely over brands trying to cram icons onto the homescreen just to make their devices feel full-featured. Even when, as here, many are just suggested downloads rather than files taking up space, it’s pretty annoying to have your screen crammed with junk you’re not interested in.

Ultimately, software continues to be Huawei’s Achilles’ heel. Despite some bright spots, there’s just not enough big-name apps on the MatePad 12X for me to shake the feeling that I’m missing out on all the fun other people are having on their tablets.

Huawei MatePad 12X 2025 review: performance

  • Decent chipset and RAM
  • Handles multitasking without any slow down

The real shame about this lack of software is that, beneath the hood, the Huawei MatePad 12X 2025 has some pretty decent power. Not only does it rock a Kirin T92B Octa-core processor, but it also packs 12GB RAM, the same amount of memory as our pick for the Best Android tablet, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Plus. But what does this all mean in the real world?

Well, first, I wanted to see how it fared with a range of productivity tasks. This wasn’t easy without full access to Google’s famously memory-hungry web apps, but I tried to open as many background tasks as possible. First, I loaded a couple of games and a couple of apps before opening the browser, where I opened a number of tabs, including Shein and Asos, several Reddit threads, a news site, and a 4K YouTube video. Once I started sketching in a free online photo-editing tool, I was pleased to see there wasn’t any significant slowdown.

Broadly speaking, the same seems to be true of games. Loading up PUBG Mobile and setting the graphics settings to maximum, I didn’t notice any significant FPS drops; every moment remained smooth and jitter-free. Meanwhile, there was no hint of lag or latency, making it easy for me to get the drop on most opponents I came across before they got me.

Using the Huawei M-Pencil Pro for various tasks, it became clear that it’s well worth the extra spend. It was always comfortable and easily manoeuvrable in my hand, and never so light that it felt flimsy or insubstantial. While sketching on apps like the GoPaint app, it was super responsive – there was no noticeable jitter or lag, and no obvious parallax between the stylus nib and the brushstrokes it created.

Probably the only area where the MatePad 12X 2025's performance is a little more mixed is its camera. It’s crisp and captures plenty of detail, but not quite as much as I’d expect from its 50MP lens. And while it’s not really fair comparing it to the iPhone 16 Pro I’m used to shooting on, I did feel some of the photos were lacking in the HDR pop I’ve come to expect. Ultimately, it’s not a bad camera, but as with any tablet, I doubt it’s going to become your go-to snapper.

Huawei MatePad 12X 2025 review: battery

  • Huge 10,100mAh battery capacity

Huawei certainly hasn’t skimped on the battery in the MatePad 12X 2025. At 10,100mAh, it’s not quite as epic as the OnePlus Pad 3, with its 12,140mAh, but is pretty capacious all the same.

Trying to get a sense of how long it would last when really pushed, I set the MatePad 12X 2025 to stream continuous 2.5K videos and measured how much it depleted the battery. After seven hours, the battery had dropped down to 20%, suggesting that you should get around nine hours of continuous high-quality streaming from one charge. This is pretty competitive and not far off the 10 hours the iPad 11-inch (2025) offers.

Even better, topping it up is incredibly fast. Using a 100W charger – which is plenty to hit the Huawei’s 66W max – I popped the Huawei on to charge for an hour. In that time, it charged 78%, meaning you can expect it to be fully charged after around an hour and 15 minutes – that’s a truly absurd charging time, given its enormous capacity.

All in all, this means you’ll get a lot of use out of the Huawei MatePad 12X 2025 before it falls flat, and you won’t have to wait long for it to spring back to life afterwards.

How I tested the Huawei MatePad 12X 2025

I tested the Huawei MatePad 12X 2025 over the course of a week. To test out its software, I used all of its first-party productivity apps and multi-tasking features. I assessed the quality of its display by watching multiple 4K HDR videos and seeing how accurately it reproduced artwork in graphics apps.

To put it through its paces in terms of performance, I ran multiple apps simultaneously while opening a wide range of browser tabs, including video streaming and web apps, to see if I could detect any potential slowdown or performance issues. I also played multiple online games on max graphics settings to look for frame rate dropping and obvious lag.

When it comes to my personal experience, I’ve been testing and reviewing gadgets for many years. The Omen Max 16 embraces a bold, aggressive design that is characteristic of gaming laptops - while you could take it into an office environment or on the go, you might get some strange looks.

Personally, I find this aesthetic quite dated, so it’s not really the best option for me, but this won’t be the case for everyone. One thing I will note, however, is that the RGB keyboard is stunning thanks to the semi-transparent keycaps.

Its chassis is sturdy, and while it's not the slimmest laptop on the market, its build quality feels premium. The laptop's larger footprint accommodates its powerful components and effective cooling system, but it does also mean that this device will be taking up a fair amount of space on your desk or in your bag if you’re intending to take this laptop on the go with you.

HP has provided an ample selection of ports, ensuring you can connect all of your gaming peripherals without the need for an extra USB adaptor. You'll find multiple USB-A ports, a versatile USB-C port with Thunderbolt 4 support, an HDMI 2.1 output for connecting to external monitors, an Ethernet port for stable online gaming, an audio jack, and even an SD card reader.

However, it's worth noting that if you’re intending to run a streaming setup off of your gaming laptop, you may need more ports in order to plug in a microphone and higher-resolution webcam.

The 16.1-inch QHD IPS display is a highlight, offering vibrant colors, sharp details, and a smooth 240Hz refresh rate. While it’s not as good as an OLED panel, IPS still offers decent image quality, and is capable of an impressive range of colors. This screen provides an incredibly immersive visual experience, making games and movies truly pop. The high refresh rate ensures fluid motion, and there's no hint of screen tearing.

The performance of the HP Omen Max 16 gaming is exceptional, consistently delivering high frame rates across a wide range of demanding games.

During extensive testing, titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2 ran beautifully at high resolutions with ray tracing enabled, showcasing the laptop's ability to render stunning visuals without compromise. In each game I tried I got high frame rates with no stuttering and no issues whatsoever, and beyond gaming, the Omen Max 16 handles resource-intensive tasks such as video editing, 3D rendering, and complex multitasking with remarkable efficiency, making it a versatile machine for power users.

One of the standout features is its cooling system. Despite running demanding applications, the laptop manages heat impressively well. While the fans do become quite loud under heavy load, they are effective at keeping internal temperatures in check, preventing thermal throttling and ensuring sustained performance. The keyboard area remained comfortable to use, even during prolonged gaming sessions, which is a testament to the efficient cooling design.

The speakers provide decent audio, clear enough for general use, but for the best results, I'd suggest picking up one of the best PC gaming headsets to take advantage of directional audio.

This is a respectable figure for a powerful gaming laptop. However, as expected with high-performance hardware, engaging in intensive gaming or demanding applications significantly reduces battery life, typically down to about one and a half hours.

Our PCMark 10 battery life benchmark and TechRadar movie test both lasted around 5 hours, which aligns with typical expectations for this class of device. For extended gaming sessions, keeping the laptop plugged in is essential.

How I tested the HP Omen Max 16

For a period of two weeks, the Omen Max 16 served as my primary device for both work and leisure activities. I integrated it into my daily routine, using it for typical office tasks, extensive gaming sessions in the evenings, and general media consumption.

The Dell Pro Max 16 Plus is a little brother to the Dell Pro Max 18 Plus I previously reviewed. It trades a bit of screen real estate for a higher-quality display and the ability to be tucked away in a backpack for on-the-go use. While it may not fit in the tighter laptop bags, it will fit in larger, more robust backpacks.

The Pro Max 16 Plus delivers powerful performance, featuring an Intel Core Ultra 9 chip, an NVIDIA RTX Pro 5000 Blackwell GPU, and up to 128GB of RAM. Simply put, this is one of the best mobile workstations of its class.

The two Thunderbolt 5 ports showcase the drive for speed, power, and forward thinking for the Dell Pro Max 16 Plus. Dell knows that at this price point and with this power, not everyone can swap them out as quickly as cheaper laptops. So, they have made sure to future-proof this one as much as possible.

The Dell team also found a way to pack in an SD Card, a Smart Card reader, an RJ45 port, and a 280W power adapter to power up this beast of a machine. The Dell Pro Max 16 Plus has a base price of around $4000, available from both the Dell US and Dell UK websites. I'm also seeing it available from some online retailers.

As ever with Dell laptops, there are a huge number of configurations available, so prices will vary. In this review, I'm testing a model with the Intel Core Ultra 9 285HX (16 Cores, 24 Threads, 5.5 GHz Turbo, 55W), 128GB RAM, an NVIDIA RTX Pro 5000 Blackwell GPU, and 2TB SSD. All alongside the 16-inch OLED 3860x2400 with 500 nits max.

Dell Pro Max 16 Plus: Unboxing and First Impressions

After just reviewing the Dell | Pro Max 18 Plus, I knew this 16-inch model was going to be very similar. It's essentially 98% as good as the Dell Pro Max 18 Plus in a smaller shell, with an upgraded Tandem OLED 120Hz Display.

Unboxing, I realized that while the 2-inch difference, of course, makes a difference for screen size, the heft of this machine is still very prevalent. This is not an Ultrabook, it’s not a thin machine you toss in your bag and forget about.

And Dell isn’t ashamed of that at all. It proudly packs an insane amount of power into this unit, all while making it look pretty good and having superb usability in day-to-day operations.

Plus, with the ability to take in 280W, I want to be able to take that charger with me everywhere, but the sheer size of this brick is wild.

This is a hefty computer. There’s no denying that. But at the same time, it is light enough and portable enough to take around. Unlike the larger 18-inch brother, which pretty much means yes, you can carry it. Still, only to and from a workspace, the 16-inch laptop is more portable and easier to toss in a backpack, take with you out of your workspace, and experience the power of portability.

While the Dell Pro 14 Premium is hyper portable and designed to be lightweight, and the Dell Pro Max 18 Plus is designed to be an entire barrage of horsepower crammed into one machine that can technically be called portable, the Dell Pro Max 16 Plus fits between the two, while still favoring the hefty side. I wouldn’t want to walk around holding this with one hand while typing with the other, but I wouldn’t mind closing this, heading to where I am going, and then popping this back open again on a table, desk, or even my lap.

In fact, comparing laptops, this one feels more like a more powerful Precision 5690. Naturally, the Precision runs on older architecture, but it’s the same size screen, a similar keyboard, and fills a similar amount of space dimension-wise on everything except thickness.

The Pro Max 16 Plus can fit in my beloved Nomatic Backpack, but is too large for sleeker backpacks like the Bellroy Transit, primarily due to the thickness on top of the 16-inch display. But then again, there are some mid-sized bags, like a few from Troubadour, that this fits in, so it really comes down to the design of the laptop pouch.

Dell has done a fantastic job at keeping ports where users want them. I’ve seen some laptops, specifically workstation-class ones, that place ports on the back of the computer, with the idea of having this machine pretty much just docked.

Thankfully, Dell takes portability seriously, even with this tier of powerhouse. Because of this, the ports are on the left and right of the machine: the RJ45, HDMI, 2x TB5, SD card, and smart card ports on the left, and the 2x USB-A, TB, and headphone jack on the right. For my testing and my use case, this layout is fantastic and has had no issues so far.

While Thunderbolt 5 is still pretty new, putting it in this kind of machine is a wise, future-forward move by Dell, putting the faster, newer, and more powerful ports in their top-of-the-line machines, knowing that people grabbing these are not swapping them out every few months or even years. Still, they have been running them hard for a while.

The last thing I’ll mention regarding design is the display. I understood the Dell Pro Max 18 Plus, as people aren’t really going to use that machine for display-first tasks. They’re not buying that kind of machine to have a great display. This one, though, has a beautiful 3860x2400 Tandem OLED with 120Hz refresh rates, though it’s limited to 500 nits.

While this is still not a machine that the average video editor would grab as their first choice, nor a pro-gamer or photographer, this can be a machine used by someone who either cares about having a high resolution display for the real estate on their screen, fitting more content, crisper, or it could be someone who is a bit of a generalist-specialist. I see this being perfect for engineers who also work in graphic design or UI design, or heavy CAD users, who want to make sure they see everything clearly.

I’ve had this laptop in my rotation of machines for a whopping 113 days at the time of writing this paragraph. I’ve run some heavy workloads on it, I’ve used it for a few days in my real day-to-day world, I’ve used it for odds and ends, and I’ve run benchmarks all to see if this machine is what it says it is. So far, it has held up wonderfully to everything I have thrown at it.

Proving its might as one of the best laptops for programming, it’s blasted through local dev environments I have run on it, it doesn’t sweat at DBeaver repos, or pulling up large codebases in VS Code, it doesn’t even flinch. I dabbled in some local LLMs to try it, and I haven’t even been able to make the Intel Core i9 even sweat.

I pulled up large building schematics as CAD Files, I opened every productivity app I could think of and ran an absurd number of draining Chrome tabs, I was processing files, converting videos, transferring on and off of drives, and still, it’s great.

Don’t get me wrong, this won't be the best business laptop for every professional, due to its heft and power consumption, but for those who cannot or will not compromise on power and still want the option to bring their primary machine with them everywhere they may go, this might be the way to do it.

Compared to the Dell Pro 14 Premium, the Dell Pro 14 Premium focuses much more on battery life and portability than the Dell Pro Max 16 Plus. Still, you’re also getting true desktop-class power, now with a spectacular display too.

My model has an Intel Core i9-285HX with 16 cores, 24 threads, and 5.5 GHz turbo. It’s an absolute animal of a chip. Paired with the NVIDIA RTX 5000 Blackwell with 24GB, 128GB of RAM, and 2TB of SSD Storage, with the option of going up to 16TB on the device, which is truly absurd. I know of desktops drooling at these specs for productivity and performance. To get some numbers, I ran some 3DMark benchmark tests. For the CPU Profile Benchmark Tests, my max-threads test scored 11,717 points.

In everyday use, this machine has handled everything I have thrown at it, with room to spare. It’s got insane power for even the professional user, and gives power into the hands of the nomads without sacrifices.

The 16-inch size is great, offering excellent screen real estate without being too cumbersome, unlike the 18-inch counterpart.

Few laptops offer this level of power while still fitting within a portable form factor. The Dell Pro Max 16 Plus is designed for the everything-fractional-developer who has to be able to do anything and everything at a moment's notice. It's designed for the generalist who dabbles in multiple high-demand areas of computing power.

The mobile workstation is designed to handle your day-to-day tasks without requiring you to hand off processing power to another companion device or even a dongle. It's self-sufficient for most tasks.

For those who need this class of workhorse, few are rating better than this one right now. Yes, it's not perfect, but it's a phenomenal option for those looking.

Last month RedMagic confirmed that it's working on the 11 Air, the successor to the RedMagic 10 Air launched back in April. Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold: One-minute preview

If you leave aside the why, the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold is unquestionably a remarkable design achievement, even more so when you consider the state of folding phone art just seven short years ago.

The Galaxy Z TriFold is, after all, the great-grandchild of Samsung's original Fold, a woe-begotten device that almost single-handedly ended the category. Samsung, however, swiftly iterated, rapidly making its folding devices thinner, lighter, sturdier, and infinitely more attractive.

Virtually everything Samsung learned from that journey is on display in the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold, a powerful, thin, relatively light, and somewhat amazing device that forces you to ask yourself why you might want to keep a 10-inch tablet in your pocket.

I finally got to hold and briefly play with the TriFold at CES 2026 in Las Vegas, where the phone made its US debut, and I came away impressed at its thinness when unfolded, its compactness when folded twice, its relatively lightweight nature, and the hints of power and even camera performance.

There's much we still need to learn, such as when it will start shipping outside Korea, and what it will cost (most estimate that $2,400 is a good starting point), and how well it will hold up to real-world use.

Even so, my overall impression is of a well-built, high-quality device that effectively answers the question of whether it's possible to have both a 6.5-inch phone and a 10-inch tablet in one compact device.

Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold: price and specs

In Korea the Galaxy Z TriFold starts at 3.59 million KRW, which equates to roughly $2,500 but it's hard to know if that will have any bearing on the final price, which could be significantly higher than that conversion or a bit lower. We'll have to wait until Samsung starts shipping the device outside its home market to find out.

The base model comes with 512GB of storage and 16GB of RAM, and there's no option for more storage, which is a bit of a shame. It's possible Samsung may revisit storage options at a later date, once it sees how the Korean market responds to the singular option (early reports are that the small initial run of Z Trifold stock quickly sold out).

Ultimately, while the Galaxy Z TriFold might cost as much as a well-appointed laptop, it's difficult to compare it to other foldables since this is a tri-folding device, unlike the Pixel 10 Pro Fold or even its own cousin, the Galaxy Z Fold 7. You get a lot more screen, and arguably a lot more engineering, for your money.

Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold preview: design

The Galaxy Z TriFold is another design triumph for Samsung in the foldable phone space. Yes, there are two hinges in this tightly wound product rather than one, but nothing about the execution feels incomplete or half-realized.

First of all, Samsung made the smart choice of designing the TriFold so that you fold in one side, then the other to fully protect the flexible 10-inch main screen when it's not in use. This is in contrast to Honor's Magic Triple foldable, which is designed so that one portion of its flexible display wraps over one of the hinges.

Samsung knows better. It's put so much thought and effort into how this device folds that the TriFold throws up a full-screen warning (and vibrates the device) if you're in danger of folding it incorrectly,

Yes, you heard that right: there is a right way and a very wrong way to fold the Z TriFold. It's always the left side first and then the right side on top of that. The three-segment stack then holds together tightly, so much so that it feels like one solid 12.9mm-thick unit.

Unfolded, each of the TriFold's three segments has a slightly different thickness, with the center section, at 3.9mm, being the thinnest. The other two are closer in thickness to the unfolded Z Fold 7: roughly 4.2mm.

In tablet mode, the TriFold lies almost perfectly flat, save for the camera bump. In general, the TriFold resists any attempt to keep it partially folded or unfolded; you either use it fully folded and focus on the cover screen, or unfold it as a tablet.

Folded, the TriFold resembles its cousin, the Z Fold 7, though at 309g it's substantially heavier. Unfolded, it's like the world's thinnest 10-inch tablet. Samsung, by the way, has done a remarkable job of hiding the flexible screen creases. Not only are they barely visible, but I could scarcely feel them.

The Galaxy Z TriFold is only available in one color for now: Crafted Black, which I liked, even if every surface of the TriFold appeared to be a fingerprint magnet.

While I didn't get a lot of time with the Galaxy Z TriFold, I can tell you that both screens are beautiful and responsive. I like that the 6.5-inch cover display doesn't feel cramped, and I don't mind the 10MP selfie camera cutout.

The flexible main display is huge, and qualifies as the first truly foldable, pocketable 10-inch tablet (it also has a small punch-out for a 10MP selfie camera, but that all but disappears on the huge screen). The display is not only fast, it's the perfect place to try out all sorts of multi-tasking and multi-desktop tricks. It's also a capable second screen for a Windows desktop, much more exciting to use than a mere Android smartphone.

Galaxy AI works especially well on the larger screen, where we used it to remove some people from a complex image during our demo session. What's notable is that the big screen can show you both the original and the AI-edited images at once in a perfectly-synced side-by-side view.

I'm sure people will be blown away when you pull this phone out, unfold it, and get to work. As for me, I did a little drawing on it with my finger, but I did long for S Pen support. However, like the Z Fold 7, the Z TriFold lacks a digitizing layer (there's no room for it at this thickness), so I'll have to be satisfied with finger or analog stylus input, at least on this first model.

With the Z Trifiold, Samsung has essentially matched the camera system found on its other big-screen foldable, the Z Fold 7. Here's what you get:

  • 200MP wide
  • 12MP ultra-wide
  • 10MP 3x telephoto
  • 10MP cover-screen
  • 10MP main-screen

It's a good system. The 200MP camera takes great photos, and I doubt anyone will be disappointed with the 12MP ultrawide and pair of 10MP selfie cameras. I do wish the 10x telephoto offered more than 3x optical zoom, but it's still, even in my limited experience with the device, a decent shooter.

I can't say much more about the cameras because I only shot with them in a small, controlled space, but I would not be surprised if they all perform similarly to their equivalents on on the Z Fold 7.

Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold: Software and AI

This is another Android 16 system running One UI 8 or above. It's a really good platform with useful widgets and daily digests.

The two AI platforms – Samsung Galaxy AI and Google Gemini – are as deeply integrated here as they are in all other recent Galaxy-grade smartphones.

However, other than trying the Galaxy AI image editing, I didn't get to try any other AI features. I don't expect any surprises here, though, and I'm pretty certain that virtually all the AI features will look better, and in some cases work better, on the 10-inch display.

As with the Galaxy S25 line and the Z Fold 7, the new Z TriFold is packing the top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy. That means it's a customized CPU build that ups the GHz just a bit, which may result in better performance than you'd get from an Android phone running the standard mobile CPU.

Backing it with 16GB was a pretty smart move, too, since it'll help support all those onboard AI operations.

The system starts and ends with 512GB of storage. There's no option for a terabyte, which is surprising since this handset is so obviously aimed at business and enterprise users.

As for how well it performs, in my brief hands-on time every operation was smooth and fast – but then I didn't have the chance to really put the Galaxy Z TriFold through its paces.

The TriFold splits its large 5,600mAh battery across the device's three segments. As for what that means for battery life in daily use, we'll have to wait for our full review.

Overall, though, the Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold impresses with expert design and engineering, big-screen productivity, and a flagship-level cover screen, all at a still truly pocketable size. Let's just hope it's not widely expensive.
