Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is a cobbled-together mess – but its biggest crime is being really, really boring

How do you follow up one of the greatest role-playing games (RPGs) ever made? The answer, according to developer The Chinese Room, is a shallow action title set in a lifeless, empty world with a bland story, apocalyptically bad pacing, and janky, repetitive combat.

Where its legendary predecessor offered fantastic freedom of choice, a cast of complex, well-written characters, and a dynamic open world filled with opportunities for emergent play, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 brings absolutely nothing similar to the table. It looks pretty at times, but that’s literally all that can be said in favor of this disappointing follow up.

To be outclassed in almost every regard by a game from more than twenty years ago should be a source of embarrassment, let alone by one that was literally released in an unfinished state by its original developer.

It’s hard to view Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 as anything other than a cynical cash grab that will massively disappoint long-time fans like me.

(Un)dead world

Set in the World of Darkness universe from the Vampire: The Masquerade tabletop game, Bloodlines 2 takes you to an alternate version of Seattle gripped in a battle between the living and the dead. It's a world that looks a lot like our own, but has an alien, sinister edge to it.

This is most obviously conveyed in an atmospheric, neo-noir art direction that sees the dark streets bathed in fog and glowing neon lights, but extends to everything from the depressing barks of random non-player characters as you walk past to the aggressive tone of in-game advertisements.

Although the visuals are impressive enough at times thanks largely to the gorgeous lighting, there’s nothing here that appeals beyond the surface level. Almost the entire game takes place within the same city block and it's just depressingly barren. Random civilians roam the streets, while others stand around nearly motionless on street corners dispensing the same canned voice lines every single time you walk past.

The visuals are by far the best part of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 and can be pretty impressive when you first boot up the game. The night-time Seattle setting is striking thanks to its bright neon lights and a smattering of thick snow.

There are a handful of buildings with modeled interiors and their inhabitants never waver from their set positions - making everything feel sterile and lifeless. There are no moving vehicles at all, exacerbating the issue.

It’s hard to adequately convey just how little there is to do in this map. Sure, there are some collectible marks that you can hoover up for bonus experience points (spoiler: you won’t need them, and there’s seemingly no reward for getting them all), but that’s your only real activity aside from some bland side quests. Attacking civilians sees you chased by the local police who often spawn right in front of you and, if you keep it up, instantly killed in a canned animation.

Santa Monica in the original Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines was not a large map either, but felt significantly more lifelike and gave you some interesting ways to mess around with your chosen vampire powers in between its missions.

Plodding along

Story is clearly the big focus in Bloodlines 2, but sadly it does nothing to make up for its shortcomings everywhere else. The basic thrust is that you’re an elder vampire awakened from a centuries-long slumber with the voice of a dead detective called Fabien in your head. With a sinister mark on your hand that limits your original power, you team up to solve Fabien’s murder as you try to work out how to remove it.

It’s an interesting premise, but the narrative is extremely rigid, which severely limits the possibilities for role-play. Your vampire has a set name, Phyre, and beyond choosing your gender and one of six vampire clans, you have vanishingly few opportunities to impact the plot.

As far as I can tell, your choice of clan barely makes any difference either. I went with Toreador, the alluring artiste faction, and this fact was referenced about three times in throwaway dialog in total. Even when you are able to make choices, they seem incredibly inconsequential beyond a brief epilogue cutscene that you see right at the very end of the game.

If that wasn’t enough, the storytelling suffers from terrible pacing throughout. It's split between three separate time periods which it alternates between at the end of each main quest. One is in the 1920s and takes place entirely in tiny rooms, while the other two are modern. In two of the timelines you play entirely as Fabien, which basically involves trudging through the deserted streets with none of your usual traversal powers (like the ability to climb walls or glide) to reach one of the few buildings with interiors to talk to someone.

It’s absolutely miserable and many of these segments seem consciously designed to waste your time, forcing you to frequently double back with every completed objective. Named non-player characters (NPCs) sit around in the same static spots, meaning that you’re constantly walking between the same buildings to glean a new spec of information over and over and over again. It doesn’t even pay off as the plot veers awkwardly between entirely predictable and completely stupid as it plods towards its unsatisfying twist ending.

Fabien has a few special powers up his sleeve, like the ability to converse with imagined objects or dead bodies, but they can only be used at very specific points decided by the developers. They also serve to cheapen any actual detective work that you would otherwise be doing by simply telling him what he needs to know for the story to progress.

I love a narrative-driven game, but there is nothing here that’s particularly enjoyable. As a Malkavian vampire (a very madness-prone faction), Fabien is suitably bonkers, but beyond some annoying quips there’s very little examination of what that actually means and how it would impact his crime-solving role in the blood sucking community.

It’s significantly worse written than the compelling indie Vampire: The Masquerade – Shadows of New York visual novel from a few years back - and that game mercifully didn’t force you to haul yourself between buildings for each new line. The voice acting is also hit and miss. The performances for Phyre and Fabien are decent on the whole, but minor characters are often flat and awkward-sounding.

Tooth and claw

There is at least some combat to break up this monotonous formula when you’re playing as Phyre. The bad news is that it's simply bad, with buggy heavy and light strikes and sloppy finisher animations that get old the two hundredth time. It might not impact the story, but your chosen clan does dictate which abilities you’re able to unlock, and some of them are quite good. I enjoyed using my charms to turn foes against each other, though there aren’t very many powers per clan and no ways to develop or augment them.

Your choice of clan is also undermined by the fact that you can still unlock the abilities from other clans by collecting the right blood types (obtained by harvesting highlighted NPCs around the map), which only further de-emphasize player decision-making in what is purportedly an RPG.

You have no inventory, so you can’t keep any guns on hand for fights, but can at least pick them up via telekinesis for a few shots if they’re dropped by one of the five or so enemy types that you’ll be facing ad nauseam throughout the game.

The combat designers presumably went on strike at some point towards the end of the game’s production, too, as the initially quite tightly designed encounters soon devolve into massive swarms of enemies equipped with overpowered ranged weapons that are just frustrating to deal with.

The game is also a technical mess, at least on PlayStation 5. Crashes are frequent later on, with a particularly nasty one forcing my console to reboot several times, and the frame rate always completely tanks whenever you enter or exit a building.

All of this leaves Vampire: the Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 almost impossible to recommend. If you’re a lover of the original game, you’re going to hate it, as it represents the antithesis of everything that made it so great. If you're new to the universe, literally any other World of Darkness game would be a better introduction. Yes, even Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood - at least it’s not this dull.

Should I play Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2?

Play it if…

You only want a decent-looking vampire game
If you literally only care about the visuals, then Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 might satisfy. The lighting can be particularly impressive when you’re walking through its Seattle streets.

Don’t play it if…

You love the original game
If you’re a big fan of the original Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, then you should stay away from this so-called sequel. It contains none of the elements that made the first a cult classic and will just be a big let down.

You crave an RPG
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is basically a glorified walking simulator with terrible combat thrown in. It’s not going to give you your role-playing fix, so you might as well play something else.

You’re after a good story
The story is not particularly exciting or interesting and is horribly paced. There are countless other RPGs with better stories, and if you’re after something set in the World of Darkness, I’d highly recommend the visual novels instead.

Accessibility features

There are a small number of accessibility options in the game, namely the ability to enable or disable subtitles and tweak their size. You can also reduce camera movement using a slider. Controls cannot be rebound on consoles, though there is a setting to invert the Y axis.

How I reviewed Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2

I played almost 15 hours of Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 on PS5 for this review. During that time, I completed the game once, having experienced every major story beat and a small handful of the boring side quests.

As a huge fan of the original Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, I frequently compared my experience to that game, having completed several full playthroughs over the years.

I also compared it to other games set in the same universe, namely Vampire: The Masquerade – Coteries of New York and its sequel Vampire: The Masquerade – Shadows of New York in addition to others like Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodhunt, Vampire: The Masquerade – Swansong, and Vampire: The Masquerade – Justice plus Werewolf: The Apocalypse – Earthblood for good measure.

Throughout my time with the game, I played it with the standard DualSense Wireless Controller and an Astro A20 X gaming headset for audio.

Hitman World of Assassination – Signature Edition brings one of my favorite games ever to Nintendo Switch 2, and I just can’t put it down

It’s hard to overstate just how much there is to do in Hitman World of Assassination – Signature Edition. This Nintendo Switch 2 port of the latest entries in the legendary stealth series comes crammed with everything from 2016’s Hitman, its follow-up Hitman 2, and the most recent instalment Hitman 3 plus heaps of downloadable content (DLC).

You get a total of three main story campaigns, tied together by a servicable overarching plot. Storytelling has never been the main appeal of Hitman, however, which lies instead in its highly replayable, richly detailed global locations.

There are 21 here (or 25 if you count the more limited tutorial and Sniper Assassin stages) ranging all the way from a high-profile Paris fashion show to the annual meeting of a sinister secret society on a remote North Atlantic island, the top of a skyscraper in sun-drenched Dubai, and the high-tech rain-swept streets of Chongqing.

Each of these is an expansive open-world sandbox that is designed to be replayed over and over again. As Agent 47, the world’s greatest assassin, your objective is always the elimination of a highly guarded target - but how you approach that is entirely up to you.

Feedback loop

Hiding with a pistol in Hitman World of Assassination – Signature Edition

You could sprint through a stage and shoot your target in the face, before mowing down legions of guards on the way to an extraction point like a bald John Wick, but careful stealth is always more effective and rewarding. The likes of Splinter Cell’s Sam Fisher might rely on futuristic tech to remain undetected, but Agent 47 just needs a simple change of clothes to get by. Knock out a guard and you can steal their outfit, exploring otherwise restricted areas and getting close to your target without the fear of being stopped.

Dress up as a member of a maintenance crew, and you might be allowed to tamper with dangerous equipment - setting up the perfect, undetectable accident kill. Agent 47 can become almost anyone, anywhere, and the possibilities that this opens up are practically endless. You’re always free to experiment, but those who prefer a more guided experience can follow dedicated mission stories - elaborate, showstopping eliminations that require multiple steps to pull off.

Every playthrough contributes to a location’s overall mastery level that unlocks new weapons, tools, starting locations, and so on. You might go in for the first time armed with just a silenced pistol and your trusty fibrewire, but before you know it you have access to compact sniper rifles, undetectable poison syringes, lockpicks, explosive rubber ducks, throwable decoys, flash grenades, and so much more. You can even start armed with a floppy fish to slap enemies over the head.

Best bit

Every location in Hitman World of Assassination – Signature Edition is superb, though the New York bank of the Golden Handshake mission remains a firm favorite. It’s a wholly indoor environment, but that doesn’t mean that it’s small. There are multiple floors to explore and some great Mission Stories including a full-on bank heist to pull off.

Even when you’ve finished the main story, this Signature Edition comes with the fantastic Patient Zero side campaign on top of heaps of bonus missions to master. You also have Escalations (bite-size challenges that layer-on absurd conditions to often hilarious results), live-service Elusive Target contracts that can only be attempted once, seasonal challenges and stages, the Sniper Elite-esque Sniper Assassin levels, and a roguelike Freelancer mode.

For the $59.99 / £54.99 asking price the value is undeniable, though it is a shame that a small amount of content is gated behind further paywalls. Some cosmetic packs, for example, and, more significantly, the extra Sarajevo Six campaign are locked behind additional $4.99 / £4.49 purchases.

There’s so much here already that most players likely wouldn’t even notice, but for die-hard Hitman fans like me who have already paid for such extras on multiple other platforms, it’s a shame that this Nintendo Switch 2 version isn’t truly 100 percent complete.

Missed shot

With gigantic crowds of NPCs and complex AI interactions, Hitman World of Assassination is a very technically demanding game. The Nintendo Switch 2 port runs at a level that I would consider just about good enough, provided that you don’t intend to play a lot with the system docked. In handheld mode, texture quality and resolution takes an obvious hit compared to the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 versions, though this isn’t hugely noticeable on the smaller screen unless you compare the images side by side.

The render distance has also been reduced by a fair amount, and there’s more pop-in than other platforms - even the Xbox Series S. When the image is static, it looks about on par with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of the game to my eyes - which is not the worst result when you consider the battery life and cooling limitations of a handheld console. The frame rate is stable in most situations too, averaging between 40 and 50 fps, but is prone to dips in certain areas of specific stages.

The streets of the leafy Vermont suburb Whittleton Creek, for example, are noticeably more jittery, as is the dense rainforest of Ambrose Island. Signature Edition also seems buggier than other versions with small visual issues, like floating objects and doors sometimes vanishing when opened, decreasing immersion. Neither of these complaints amount to anything that renders the game unplayable, but I am hopeful that things will be smoothed out in future patches.

As for the docked experience, this is unfortunately where it all falls apart a little bit. Blowing the picture up on a big screen allows you to appreciate some of the complex lighting, weather, and reflection effects at play, but makes the cutbacks much more apparent. Again, the experience is never horrifically bad, but if you want Hitman World of Assassination on a big screen you will unavoidably be much better served by the PS5 or Xbox Series X and Series S editions.

There are also some areas where I feel as though developer Io Interactive has really missed the opportunity to make some simple changes to really take advantage of the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware. Foremost is the game’s control scheme, which is effectively identical to other console versions. There’s no Joy-Con 2 mouse aiming here, or even basic gyroscope support which is disappointing given how much it would improve precision aiming with long-range weaponry.

Hitman World of Assassination is also still limited by the lack of a proper offline mode. Sure, you can technically play the game without an internet connection - but you have to sacrifice access to literally all your progression. Unless you’re keen to run around with default loadouts, you have to be online. While I like to play at home, this could be a dealbreaker for those looking for a new favorite to play on the go.

With all that said, is Hitman World of Assassination – Signature Edition worth picking up? I would say yes as, despite this version’s flaws, you’re still getting a fully playable version of one of the greatest stealth games ever made. There’s plenty here to keep you busy and, with a few updates under its belt, we could be looking at a must-have Nintendo Switch 2 release.

I played Hitman World of Assassination – Signature Edition for more than 10 hours on Nintendo Switch 2, experiencing every location in the game at least once.

I’m a die-hard Hitman fan, and have spent more than 900 hours in Hitman, Hitman 2 and Hitman 3 on Xbox One and Xbox Series S, in addition to roughly 200 hours in Hitman World of Assassination on PC and PlayStation 5 so I compared my experience closely to that.

I played Hitman World of Assassination – Signature Edition for more than 10 hours on Nintendo Switch 2, experiencing every location in the game at least once.

I’m a die-hard Hitman fan, and have spent more than 900 hours in Hitman, Hitman 2 and Hitman 3 on Xbox One and Xbox Series S, in addition to roughly 200 hours in Hitman World of Assassination on PC and PlayStation 5 so I compared my experience closely to that.

Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 review: Three-minute review

Edifier might not be a household name but if the Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 are anything to go by, then the firm really needs to garner more attention. Available for £129.99 / $129.99 / AU$229.99, the Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 are deceptively cheap for a feature set that includes active noise cancellation, hi-res audio support, Bluetooth 5.3, and a snazzy looking app and case. They must be fairly poor, right? Wrong. 

While the Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 struggle with some very middling battery life that's bordering on not good enough, everything else about them is impressive. When it comes to ANC quality, I don't even mean impressive for the price, I mean good for any of the best noise cancelling earbuds

Walking along a busy road and barely hearing a thing is the dream. It's possible to hear that there is traffic flying past, but it's entirely background noise and doesn't detract from what you're listening to in the slightest.

Alongside that, the Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 sound great with the 10mm dynamic driver paired with a balanced armature driver ensuring they sound balanced. Crisp sounds as you listen to the latest from Taylor Swift right back to some soothing classical music all ensures the Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 are a delight.

App support means you can adjust things via the EQ which is nice but not necessary for anyone other than the most avid of audiophiles. If you want a little more punchiness though, you can't go wrong with the Dynamic Mode which worked well with Muse's back catalogue.

With ANC enabled, even with the charging case, you'll only be able to listen for about 16 hours at the absolute most which isn't great but that's a small bugbear for most people and one that I'm willing to accept at this price point.

Similarly, the look of the Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 is a little Star Trek: The Next Generation ish rather than as sleek as some competitors like the Apple AirPods Pro 2, but these are still a bargain that richly deserve a place among the best wireless earbuds.

The Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 was released in August 2023 for $129.99 in the US, £129.99 in the UK and AU$229.99 in Australia. The earbuds are currently available in the US, UK and Europe. 

Two color choices are available – either black or ivory. Fairly ordinary colors, either could end up discounted at some point but the Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 are very shrewdly priced already.

Outside of sales, the Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 are roughly similarly priced to the Sony WF-C700N at $119 / £99 / AU$199 and the standard Apple AirPods with a wired charging case (although these are often discounted). Notably, the standard AirPods lack ANC although the Sony earbuds still offer it.

The Edifier app is one of the best around with all the features you could want. That includes adjusting different levels of ANC to your liking, setting up head-tracking and tweaking the EQ. You can even change the color of the LED on the charging case which is a cute touch. 

The Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 also offer wear detection which is mostly very accurate. Once in a while, I found it not detect me removing the buds from my ears but for the most part, it was a delight to put them in and have music kick straight back in.

There isn't multipoint support so you can't connect two devices at once but the Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 remain ideal for your commute or keeping permanently hooked up to your phone. There's also Bluetooth 5.3 support to ensure no dropouts.

The Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 are fine when it comes to battery life but a little weaker than some of the competition. There's up to 22 hours including the case when ANC is disabled led but you'll likely want it switched on. Enabled and with Hi-res audio kicking in, you can see just two to three hours of playback with four hours usually experienced with ANC on. 

Mileage will vary here and I didn't find it a dealbreaker as a pair of earbuds for the daily commute, but if you need to use them for extended periods, you may be disappointed by the Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2's performance.

The most exceptional thing about the Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 is how good the ANC is. Wireless earbuds are rarely competing with the best noise-cancelling headphones  given their design but I'd go so far as to say the Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 felt class leading. Walking along a busy road, noise was easily cancelled out and reduced to being quiet background noise ensuring I could hear every moment of Taylor Swift belting out Bad Blood

Via the app, there are plenty of noise cancellation modes to choose from depending on the situation. I mostly lived with them on the strongest setting but it was useful to be able to switch to milder levels or an ambient mode to hear the key details going on around you. A wind reduction mode was particularly useful in this part of the country where the wind seems to never calm down.

Similarly, out of the box, the Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 sound good. The mids are crisp and the highs detailed with little issue here. Bass isn't booming but it feels smooth and punchy nonetheless. While bassheads may prefer an even louder response, it's a pretty balanced result here. Tracks like the reworking of Welcome to New York by Taylor Swift feel as exciting as it's meant to sound, making even the gloomiest of days feel a little livelier. Classics like God Only Knows have just the right amount of sparkle while feeling bright throughout.

There are adjustments that can be made via the app and they work well, particularly if you want to add more punchiness to your listening but mostly, there's no need to make any tweaks unless you truly feel in the mood.

The only minor issue comes from a soundstage that could maybe be a little wider but as detailed as it is, I'm not complaining. Add on the Hi-Res audio support with the latest LHDC 5.0 HD codec, and the Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 are packing some hefty weight for the price.

Despite lacking the battery life of some earbuds, the Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 have a fairly sizeable case. Angular in design, it'll take up more room in your pocket than other earbuds like the Apple AirPods. Despite all that room, there's no wireless charging with charging solely via the USB-C port. 

There's also room for an LED light bar on the front with the app allowing you to choose from eight different colors. It's a little gimmicky but it pumps out more light than you'd expect, as I discovered while going for a dawn walk. Otherwise, the case isn't exactly good looking.

The earbuds themselves are fairly hefty too but that's beneficial as the tips ensure a balanced design that mean they fit snugly in your ears without ever feeling like they could drop out of your ears any time soon, even when running. It's not the most attractive of designs but it's certainly practical. 

On the earbuds are a touch area for light touches and long presses. Thanks to the effective wear detection, you may find you don't need these very often but they're great for taking calls.

The Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 are very shrewdly priced. The ANC is better than most along with other key features. Competition arises from the standard Apple AirPods which lack ANC or the Sony WF-C700N which are slightly cheaper.

Ultimately, the Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 is punching above its weight making it great value if you don't mind slightly lesser battery life and other minor issues.

The Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 were my trusty companion over 10 days or so, replacing my usual earbuds. 

That meant they were with me during each of my morning walks amongst the busy rush hour commute. They were also used walking around even busier areas where, normally, I wouldn't have been able to hear what I was listening to. To make matters noisier, I also dealt with some fairly strong winds and storms so it was a strong test of the earbuds' ANC. 

Besides being worn for walks, I also used the Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 on a couple of runs to check they fit snugly and securely. 

During my evenings, I used them to watch Twitch streams and YouTube videos, while the daytime was mostly spent with Apple Music and Spotify to try out different types of music. Genres ranged from pop, jazz, classical, soundtracks, to a friend's album which wasn't as heavily processed as others. 

I've been reviewing audio products for about 10 years now and am pretty picky with what sounds good as well as what feels right in my ears. It's always good to feel like you're rediscovering a favorite thanks to the earbuds you're using.
