Today Google Photos is receiving improvements to search, letting you use more descriptive queries using everyday language. An example Google gave is something like "Emma painting in the backyard", and you can see how it works in the video below. You can sort the results by date or relevance, to help you get to the specific image you're after even faster. This experience is currently rolling out in English to all users on Android and iOS, and will expand to more languages "in the coming weeks". Select US users are also getting early access to Ask Photos via Google Labs...

It's been a very Gemini-filled Google I/O conference this year, and Google Photos hasn't escaped Gemini-fication. Google has announced Ask Photos, an "experimental feature" that will be rolling out over the coming months, making it easier for you to get to a specific memory or recall information that's in your gallery. This is powered by Gemini and will help you find what you need without scrolling through many pages of photos and videos. As the name implies, with Ask Photos, you simply ask for what you're looking for in a natural way. The example Google gives is "show...

Today Google has announced that the AI-powered tools inside Google Photos will be available to anyone using the app, without any subscription required. We are talking about Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, and Portrait light. This will happen from May 15, which, coincidentally or not, is the day after Google's annual developer conference. As always, expect the rollout to take a few weeks after that date, since that's the way Google likes to do things. The three aforementioned features will also be available on "more devices, including Pixel tablets", Google revealed. Last year, Google...

Google Photos has learned a neat little trick to better serve its users on Android and iOS. It will use AI to create a highlight video of anything you'd like, with background music in tow. The feature is rolling out to Android and iOS users right now though it may take a few days to reach your phone. When it does, you'll have a new "+" icon at the top of your timeline, from there choose Highlight Video. You then use the search within Photos to find what places, people, or topics you want and fire away. AI will do the rest - choose the right clips, a background tune and sync it all...

The Google Photos app has started automatically backing up all RAW images, reports 9to5Google. On a Pixel 8 that previously captured RAW pictures with the Pixel Camera app, the publication spotted Google Photos displaying a banner saying, "New RAW photos will appear in the Photos view and will now be backed up." The existing RAW images on the device won't be uploaded automatically. When you click a RAW photo, a JPEG version is also captured and uploaded automatically to Google Photos. That's not ideal if you take a lot of pictures in RAW since RAW files are larger than JPEG and could...

Back in May, Google introduced a new Ultra HDR format with the release of Android 14 Beta 2, which aims to bring support for 10-bit HDR images, which will be fully compatible with standard JPEG images. This way, the system will display SDR images on non-HDR screens, but colors and contrast will pop when displayed on an HDR-enabled panel. The first app to bring support for Google's new Ultra HDR format is none other than Google Photos. In version 6.51.0.561138754, AssembleDebug found a few strings pointing at Ultra HDR support. Other third-party apps will be able to take advantage of...
